I wish I could recommend an electronic pet door. However, as I mentioned in the video, they all have too many issues to be a reliable option. Plus, none of them look very good either. As always, I will suggest a high-end well insulating pet door over an electronic one.

So I have had customers in the local Tennessee area reach out to me to replace flaps and things on their pet doors that are installed in a window. Most of the ones that I have seen are kind of rigged in place and they don’t really seal all that well with the window. In other words it’s kinda like the inserts they put in a sliding glass door. They get the job done, but they’re not as energy efficient as one that would put in the wall or an entry door.

I’ve never had anyone ask for a pet door to be installed in that way. I’m unaware of any pet door that could be installed in the floor and allow the flaps to re-close.

@@mkojalo The simple answer is yes. You are training your dog not to leave the perimeter. So they will not want to walk through the perimeter. Anytime you want your dog to leave the perimeter, you will remove the collar and then get them up off the ground. You can simply carry them across the boundary, or drive them out of the boundary. When you return simply carry them back into the perimeter and reapply the collar. This way your dog will understand that they cannot leave the perimeter unless you carry them out.

Now that’s an idea!

What you’re doing is just allowing the signal to run from 1 wire - into 2 wires and then back to 1 wire. The signal will travel along all of them and still activate the collar. There are 2 sides of the fence. One side is connected to one terminal of your fence transmitter and the other side is connected to the other terminal. It is when these two sides come together and are twisted is when the signal cancels. You are simply twisting one side of the loop and that is why it is not canceling. This is still one of the most popular questions I get. I will put out an updated video in the next couple of days to help clear up the confusion with a better visual aid.

My pleasure sir. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. To answer your question, I’m not certain. I have never attempted to splice into a barbed wire fence so I couldn’t verify this for you. I would assume you would run into some interference issues and inconsistent collar activation. I guess you could give it a try temporarily and see how it does and if it doesn’t work out, just simply attach the fence wire to the barbed wire fence.

Yes. If an improper splice was made and it’s barely coming apart, it can cause the alarm to intermittently go off due to changes in the soil conditions. Prey drive can be challenging to control and does take a little more time to overcome when training your pup to ignore those types of distractions. You can be successful if you’re willing to put in the nessecary training time, along with using a reliable fencing system.

Most of the sliding glass door options such as the panel inserts are not very good at keeping the bad weather out. They also take up space in the sliding glass opening, reducing the room for people to get through the sliding door. I would suggest going through the wall. If that’s not an option you can try to research local glass companies that can install a pet door for you in the glass of the sliding glass door.

I’m glad the video was helpful. The good news is that underground dog fencing can be altered. Simply splice into the underground cable where needed and the run it how you would like. Then splice it back in. Just need to reflag the new boundaries and re-train your dog to the new layout. Hope that is helpful to you.

Well, that’s a first! I have never had that question asked before. These electronic dog fences were initially invented for herding goats. So electronic dog fencing can be used on different animals. However, I haven’t heard of anyone using it on a primate. I would suspect it would not be a good fit.

I have not experienced that scenario before. However it may have to do with a couple of possibilities that can easily be fixed. Which brand of fence are you using? Is this a completely new water well? Or did you simply replace the pump? Is the fence wire running inline with the electrical that is running the water pump?

@@outdoorpetsolutions I am using the Petsafe Stubborn Dog. Same cheap one you referenced in your how to detect a break video. This is a new water well that was added after our fence was put in. The loop was damaged when work was done and I reran a section that encircled the well. It does run within 15-20 feet of it but not inline and perpendicular to it. In the past I have used their RFA-590 wire break locator and had good luck with it. I am using the 22 gauge wire. With the locator everytime the pump kicks on there is crazy interference coming out the speaker, and the controller beeps loop break at the same time.

It’s odd for the wire break alarm to sound every time the pump kicks on. There maybe a loose splice where you reran the wire. If you’re using 22 gauge. That’s a pretty thin wire. If you used wire nuts, you may have over twisted the copper and have a slight break that for whatever reason comes apart when the pump kicks on and then reconnects. I’d first double check the spices. That’s a bummer! Before I plug the surge unit into the outlet, I’ll take the outlet cover off, remove the outlet and tighten up the ground wires to make sure it has a solid ground. Sometimes if the ground isn’t good the surge will still come through. Also, some older homes outlets are not grounded at all 😬. In those cases, I’ll run a dedicated ground cable from the outlet I’m using for the transmitter, out to the outside to the common ground. This maybe a good idea for you once you get everything replaced. Feel free to reach out anytime of you need help.

That’s a good question. And the short answer is no. If the cable is just nicked your dog fence system shouldn’t be alarming. If you have a loose connection the tracer is liable to simply trace right over those areas. It can only locate the cable and complete breaks in the cable. This is why it’s best to splice the cable together properly to prevent loose connections in the future. The pet door manufacture doesn’t address this in the installation instructions. There is typically a sizable gap between the brick and the inner sheathing. When you install yours, you could purchase a roll of rubber membrane/vapor barrier and seal up inside of the wall cavity before installing the steel tunnel.

Sorry for the late response. If you drill out the 4 corners you’ll have blow out that the frame of the pet door won’t be able to cover. It is best to drill a pilot hole in the center of your pet door and then transfer the measurements from that point.

The cable that is manufactured for us does not use an XLPE insulated wall. That is the more common jacketing that is used with the mass produced building wire. It can be directed buried, however it is typically a thinner wall that is missing the additional UV protection along with the oxidative stability, toughness, and abrasion resistance. Early on in my career I used the XLPE covered cable, but it did break down over time due to environmental and thermal stress-cracking. This is where the jacketing becomes brittle and falls apart. I have been using the cable I provide today, for about 15 years and it is by far the best I can get my hands on to prevent the breakdown of the insulated wall.

@@outdoorpetsolutions Actually, I do repair work here in Phoenix and I was wondering what you charge to give me an idea of what I might be able to charge for a similar job. I have installed several pet doors in the past, Just don't know what the going rate is.

My suggestion would be to charge your normal hourly rate to complete the job. Plus the cost of the pet door. I have been in the business for a while and have completed a lot of installs. So a typical through wall install takes me approximately 2 hours plus drive time. But the first few times you do it, will probably take you a bit longer. I would also suggest reaching out to a pet door installer in your area such as Apollo Pet Doors. Ask for a quote on installing a pet door and that will give you an idea of the market rate in your area.
