Budget rust repair.
I'm restoring on a budget. So I try to make a lot of panels. it's more work at times but it's all in learning. education costs no matter how you get it.

Great stuff Dave. The coat hanger method you use, is it welding wire or actually coat hanger? The number of views on the death foam delete doesn’t surprise me and I think will just keep going which is great to see, and well deserved👍🏼. Did you give any thought to the question I asked about the inside of the C posts? Have restful weekend, Phil
Hello Philip, the coat hanger is welding wire. A real coat hanger is just as good but our coat hangers now are plastic. Yes my death foam video is doing real well.👍 As far as the c pillar, I’m not sure how I’m going to go about it. I see no sign of rust but but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any. I may just run a long device up through there on a drill. Then afterwards treat the inside? Do you have any ideas . I hate to cut the panels if not needed.
Yeah I’ve seen that done a few times, even using a frayed clutch cable in a drill to get rid of the death foam or at least reduce it, when cutting and welding isn’t required. A bit like when people clean out the carb pre-heat pipe on the inlet manifold. I think your work is top anyway, so when you open it up you’ll clean it anyway, and it’s taken 50+ years build up, with what you then do to it, it’ll out live us two😂 I think I was referring to your finished look inside? ie deleting those now redundant air vent on the interior, 3 each side, then stopping the headliner short to expose the smooth, custom, painted c pillars. It does look good to those that know, but gives you a lot of work though.🤔
@@philp4842yes Philip I would definitely delete the interior rear six little vents. I would prefer the smooth look. Thanks again for a great idea. 👍🤓
Looks good.
A lot more to go….
great as usual take care mate
Ty Russel, I have a lot to go.
@@busterstravels1534 you will get there with small steps

Trying to get as much in as I can before winter. I plan on taking this one to Slades next July. That’s my goal. I’m taking the weekend off. Ha! Ha! 👍 🤓
Good job looks good
Thanks Louis, rust sucks, but in northeastern Pa it’s a way off life. I like using sheet metal where I can. Have a great weekend.
Brilliant work! I always learn so much!
That makes me feel good, I try to help in some way.
Awesome video Dave! I don't have any evidence of rust in the death foam areas. Do you think I should open that area up to remove the foam or just leave it? I also need to deal with some bent up body panels in the rear driver's side wheel well so this is a great video for my how-to library! Congrats on hitting 1,000 subs!!
Hello Trixed out, I have no sign of death foam on my passenger side but to be sure I am going to cut out a section from inside the car to revoke the foam and for future peace of mind. I’d hate to have it pop out in a year from now. Ty on the congratulations. It feels good. Ty
Awesome work Dave. Maybe a video on the door supports. I know there's a place that sells them, but I want to make a set. Materials needed and length of pipe.
Thanks again Kombi1, I will make a video on the door support soon. Great idea. They are very inexpensive to make. 👍🤣

@@pstreetgarage7304 thanks bud, ha I don’t think of it as easy or hard, I just keep moving forward. Constantly thinking of next move. Like you’re doing on the bus. 👍
Awesome 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I think you’ll get a lot of views with this one Dave and hopefully some more subscribers 👍🏼. The title is spot on and as others have said there is very few videos on this subject, plenty of photos on the samba and similar. I’ve only had to repair this area once in nearly 40 years of Beetle ownership, but I think it’s due again soon, so it’s a great refresher. It’s interesting, and I hope the guys and girls that want to have a go pick up on it, but when people nut and butt, despite roughly marking around the panel, just how much the panel is pulled into its correct position as the black marker line shows at 29:07! If a ‘newbie’ was to just cut it out and assume it’ll fit hopefully the way you’ve shown will highlight to them how, if nothing else, how important it is to think through the best way to tackle each repair before they start, no matter the size or complexity👍🏼 Have you given any thought to the inside on that c pillar? i.e. losing the three now redundant vents? A guy in the UK welded those up and when he added his headliner never went over those areas, a bit 1200 style, just paint, it looks superb, very minimal headliner, smooth painted detail, a bit sort of custom and racey. Anyway keep it up Dave, lovin it.
I forgot, thanks for the shout out, my name in lights wow, I’m totally star struck and my wife says I’ve become very demanding and a bit of a diva, fame has gone to my head 😂😂😂
I have that repair to do but I’m going to try and keep the moon. We will see. Mine is a LaGrande
That’s cool Chris, I just wanted to try something different. You’ll do great on your repair just take your time and think it through. Don’t forget heat is the enemy.
@@busterstravels1534 I'm going to build it for the wife. She won't know the difference. Well see. Making a Dolly for the body and going to do the chassis and go from there.
Great place to start. It’s a lot of work but little by little you get though it. She will love it. 👍
I like the line you used “hope that’s the right thing to do” great job
Thanks bud, it was a real thought, ha! I did cut the interior piece a little short. But everything is fixable. Enjoy the project. 👍
Your work is awesome. How many years have you been doing metal work?
Thank you, I do love working with metal. I’m 70 and have worked with metal thick and thin my whole life. I basically learned my trade in the Navy. 1973-1977. Thanks again for the nice comment. Good work as usual Dave. As said before good call to lose the half moons. It’s almost like your working on my car with these mods😂 As I get older I get more and more fed up, sorry i meant incapable 🤣, of crawling around underneath when I want to get the engine out, are you going for a removable rear valance? I shall definitely be doing it this time around.
Hello Philip, I’m 70 and when I started building my sons I was very immobile. I had to crawl back up off the floor but by doing so , over time I got more mobility. I still have a tough time but much better than a year ago. I love doing this stuff so that helps. I did think about you when I was deleting the moons. It was your idea. I’m glad I did it. It came out well. As far as the rear apron, I never thought about making it removable. I welded it on also yesterday. I have been working on it a lot lately. Trying to get as much done as possible before winter.to bad we don’t live closer we could help each other. Good day Buddy.

Great job my late father did the same rust under that rubber seal moulding too dad actually completely did away with it and used a heavy-duty double-sided waterproof tape on a larger rubber seal worked great and you did a wonderful job welding in the rust repair patch
Hello Russel, now they have a Mexican seal it goes on the truck lid. Those seal channels are a big problem. When you use the Mexican seal you still need to use the old seal that goes across the cowl .👍
Very inspiring to see the puzzle piecing of bodywork. Moreso on my favorite vehicle. Your pace and content are pleasant to view. I have never welded, but I am grateful for the mechanical knowledge bestowed to me to be able to keep one on the road.
