The first and third movements are called “Rheims” and “Verdun” respectively, and the Marseillaise is quoted extensively in the second and third movement. Stanford’s dedication for the piece reads “To Monsieur Charles Marie Widor and the gr...
Bach | Prelude and Fugue in B minor BWV 544 - James Orford, the Grand Organ of Westminster Cathedral
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Johann Sebastian Bach's incredible Prelude and Fugue in B minor, performed here by James Orford on the Henry Willis III Grand Organ at Westminster Cathedral. It is a piece full of torment and anguish, but also with moments of intense joy and catharsis. Particularly appropriate for Passiontide, as there are links with the St John Passion BWV 245, most notably the big cadences in the Prelude, in ...

Toca com tanta facilidade e sem malabarismos que parece até uma peça fácil. Congratulations!
BRAVO!
Lovely -- can't wait to explore the set and your organ offerings.
That is wonderful -- the selection and the performance. Bravo! What a shame that most non-organists ignore Vierne, Widor et al -- and that most organists ignore these maitres' non-organ works for that matter. How do you come to be playing this piece? Incidentally it was the inspiration for a great organ number -- Carillon-Sortie by Mulet.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful interpretation
Gorgeous 🎹👏
Absolutely magnificent! I hear here a deep empathy with Stanford's score - played with consummate skill. Thank you!
Beautiful and one of the best performances of this piece that I’ve heard.
@@cnsedgwick thank you!
Great job Mr. Orford. I am going to relearn this great work this year. I especially love the wonderful fugue.
Bravo!!
i never would have guessed the rytmic technique with both hands !! great job
I never knew this Czech composer, I accidentally heard this composition on Spotify and it plunged me into great excitement. To tears. Perfect harmony, perfect texture. Excellent piano performance
Divine!
Nicht schlecht
Wonderful Interpretation
Wonderful performance. I have worked on this incompatible instrument and played it many times.
It's refreshing to hear this wonderful piece played 'straight', as it were; no added ornaments or registration changes, for example. Not that such things are necessarily wrong (after all no-one is ever likely to know exactly how Buxtehude actually performed this piece!) but played this way I find the music, with its various textures, is allowed to speak clearly for itself. Thank you 😊
Thank you! I completely agree, the variation of textures is enough in this piece. I would do more registration in the C minor Chaconne though!
@@JamesOrford I think you're right about registration in the c minor. Of the recordings I've heard I prefer the ones that end quietly though. There's a haunting melancholy about both Chaconnes, especially the e minor. I believe it's supposed to be a late work and I can't help wondering if Buxtehude wrote it in the wake of his daughter Helena Elizabeth's death in 1692 at the age of 22... the fourth of his daughters he lost in his own lifetime. Pure speculation on my part, of course but I'm convinced these composers didn't write their works in some sort of emotional vacuum.
A commanding and thrilling performance of a great work of Louis Vierne. I have played it twice in my own career. Congratulations, James.
thanks for playing this!
I'm with @jeffjensen27: Bach would have been proud!
How did your guys achieve this playing at different location at the same time?
One of us recorded first, then the other recorded themself listening to the first person’s recording. Then we added them together!
Excellent rendition ,Musicality at its best, Thank you James
Thank you so much!
Toto není žádný valčík! Právě tak to pan hraje.Smetana nebyl povrchní skladatel, využíval agogiku,rubato....
Bit heavy on the pedals !!
Nah. This one needs some welly.
Beautifully played with a rather fast tempi. Brava.
This was very enjoyable! But it's also very "Covid-19", that is, "stay at home and make music by yourself" - although from a very early stage of the pandemic and I don't know if restrictions were in place at that time.
Thank you! We did indeed do this during the pandemic from opposite ends of the country, when there was no music-making allowed!
Learning this piece too right now .. love it so much
Wonderful 👏👏👏
I’ve sent this to someone who’s having cricket trouble as a reminder of better days when you played in the team!
Dear James Orford, I love this kind to play the Organs very much......Thanks thousands times for this!!! 🥰🥰🥰
FANTASTIC ! Congratulations James
Благодарю !!!❤
The best place to play this "Carillon de Westminster" of Louis Vierne, former organist of Notre-Dame de Paris ...
Well it's certainly a great place to hear this piece, but so too is Westminster Abbey.
Notre-Dame every time. Westminsters is far to cumbersome for the finger work (especially the finale) as you can see here.
@richardharrold9736 Exactly! It probably sounded much more as the Saint-Sernin in Toulouse (though acoustics is very different) or Saint-Ouen in Rouen which would be one of the very best instruments to play this peace.
You are ignorant. Vierne didn't compose this at Notre Dame. It was an Improvisation at the opening recital at Westminster Cathedral, the chimes tune was relayed to Vierne by Willis himself but made a mistake by getting the second note wrong which Vierne never corrected. As written in D major, F# E D A instead of F# D E A. Supposedly, Willis was to hand a piece of paper over with the tune in Braille but forgot it and had to sing the tune albeit wrongly but this can't be confirmed. There you have it.
Hi
What a Fascinating melody
Amazing!
There’s a remarkable breadth to this prelude; a sheer horizon in music.
It gives me hope for the future that there are young organists like this in an age where hope is often hard to come by.
Be good on the organ as well nice Ralls and rubato
Stylish playing. I noticed you sped up in the fugue a little when the pedals entered and the semi quaver runs started. I like the faster tempo better so I enjoyed it even more from then on
The flow was so effortless it was almost as if technical issues were non-existent. Just amazing! Great piece and what makes this so special was the story telling, the sections and phrases and overall unity. A++
The clarity is amazing - almost like a studio. And the playing is just so...magnificent, so Bachish and yet so Romantic. Great job.
A truly faultless performance! Absolutely fantastic watching to say the least! Can you do a recording of Stanfords Brittanica next? ❤️
Thank you so much! Britannica is the next project
@@JamesOrford excellent! Definitely looking forward to seeing that! That’s a piece I’ll need to relearn. As not played it in a while! Parry’s Fantasia and Fugue in G is another you’ll have to record. That’ll sound EPIC on the Westminster Cathedral organ
Magnifique. Bravo à l'interprète
Magnifique. Bravo à l'interprète !
Heavenly played l, but I will never ever understand why so much TH-camrs cut the sustain before it has completely passed.
Félicitations !
Bravo!! BRAVO!!
Enthusiastic 🎶♥️🙏
Beautiful!! My dad was a pipe organ repairman / builder. He could have offered this as inspiration to people who had to wait for him to come fix the ciphers! LOL.
