    Great video but where do u get the pollen from?

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get pollen from many health food stores and I guess you can order it through google. I buy mine from a health store at the central market.

    your birds aint a fan of the pellets because there bad for them since you blend them there okay

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you misunderstood me. I don’t blend the pellets. The vets recommend pellets as a nutritional product. I wouldn’t just like to live iPod vitamin tablets either. The lorikeets love the wet mix that I make. I add bee pollen when I can and if there isn’t much in flower. At the moment the lorikeets are not even coming home because there is lots of natural wild blossoms, lilypillies etc... around for them to eat. Thanks for your interest :)

    Bottlebrush flowers are in bloom all over Adelaide at the moment. Pick a quiet street or a park and if you take from the inside bottom of the tree it is relatively pollutant free and not stealing from other lorikeets. There are various other natives to try to. Not recommended for asthmatics or severe hay fever sufferers to do the picking. Don’t take more than a couple of days worth. They wilt readily. You can keep them in water for day two. Happy Foraging!

    Hi can you tell me diet for my red lory pair with chicks

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your red lori pair should have a similiar diet. You can easily buy dry mix and just give extras such as apples, pears and any c tropicsl fruit you have available. Also pick them native Audtrslian flowers everyday that you can. If not on Australia - find out what other nectar eating birds in your area eat. Mine have enjoyed lavender very much and that is not an Australian native.

    Thanks Pinkie. Buying up cheap or blemished fruit and blending it in also works well. We often buy bulk fruit on sale, stew or vitamize it, freeze it in cubes and add a few with the wet mix.

Also I've been told that if i TAME them then they will Not have babies or mate anymore???? Please im in of help, i don't want to bother anyone at the store so i looked at videos, And i found yours. J Z125cc they eat all types of fruit except Ava ado and they do enjoy a little bit of carrot, they also eat Lorikeet mixes wet or dry plus nectar pellets. Dry food stops the squirting poo and yes they can breed if it's a pair that's handraised.

    Hi Ros, do you feed them de husked or not? I didn't think they are seeds.

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PINK CHAMPAGNE Hi, no they were not de husked. It was only as a special treat. We usually fed them juicy fruits or nectar. They have recenrly been scared away by the red wattle birds.

      Ros Stiles Oh no, I hope they come back, you are such a sweet lady,

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They love a few sunflower seeds but too many are really bad for them. I also gave them some chopped up veg and nuts. This was a pretty exciting period for us. All the lorikeets had been rescued by us one way or another. We released them as a flock of 17. We trained them up to eat mainly natural flowers and when they came back everyday (often flying into the aviary for food) we continued to put wet mix out for them. We generally only have three returning for spring and summer now - although more will return if it is dry and often when they first come back to the district, as a flock. The seeds were not husked, part of their joy is to split them open first, then chew up the inner husk.

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were all rescues that had been released but kept coming back. If you want lorikeets in your yard firstly live in Australia or near Australia are some types. Second, plant smaller native nectar flowers such as bottle brush. Third - put out fruit and lorikeets food mix. Lastly - no dogs and especially no cats. In fact most have stopped returning since our neighbour got two little happy dogs.

  • @RosStiles
    @RosStiles 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Home made Lorikeet food is an unfortunate necessity when there are not many (or no) bushes flowering. Wild birds will fly around to find their food. Our released lorikeets don't fly far and come home several times a day (even now - a few years later). Our rescued lorikeets also needed wet mix. But don't worry - I used to drive up and down the streets harvesting branches for them. Now we only have Swiz ( on my shoulder) and she flies free range and can help herself to our nectar bushes out the back. I am sure we all do the best we can. :)

      Rae Cooper I hope the recipe helped you and gave you some inspiration ?

  • @verticalsmurf
    @verticalsmurf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    At first, I have to say I was cranky. You know Loris are nectar feeders but you were talking about rice grain and wheat bix. Then you started talking about other ingredients and I thought, maybe you are on to something. Then you showed that bag of Lori mix that my mums birds won't touch. They loved the Wombaroo but they must have changed the recipe as well because the birds won't eat that either. So Mum is now feeding them a wet mix made up of a few shop bought varieties plus wattle and other plants when they are in season. Picky birds.

    • @RosStiles
      @RosStiles 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      verticalsmurf - it is always best to give birds what is in their natural diet. Baby birds eat regurgitated food though - which is what started me down this track. Then I had tips from a Fauna Rescue volunteer about the weetbix. I didn't like them getting the nasties from manufactured food and it was getting expensive to feed so many - Hence the bulk buying etc... I hope you and your Mum are getting lots of bird love. My birds also like many fruits,greens, cooked veg and Swiz loves olives. We just have to keep trying them out on new things. 😀

    You are welcome. I recently discovered rice flour if you get that in bulk it is even cheaper. These days I use cheap fruit (either canned or cheap from the store - what ever is on special rice flour, fructose and mix it together. I add about half a teaspoon of pollen when I can't find any fresh native flowers, Ros
