Sorry that I haven't uploaded any other tutorials, I just didn't find it interest me all that much. I'm probably just going to post some of my songs from now on, so apologies in advance. If you enjoy this, please check out my Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/drumfoolery
Yamaha DX7 Tutorial - Envelope Ramblings (Episode 2?)
มุมมอง 6K7 ปีที่แล้ว
I'll put up a better description later. Just going through explaining a standard ADSR envelope and trying to put into words how I try to think of the DX7 Envelope to make it easier for me. I didn't go into using the Pitch EG, as that's something that I wouldn't want to mess around with unless I had a nice sound that used it ready, but the principles of how to use the envelopes was what I was go...
Yamaha DX7 Tutorial - Basic functions and creating saw and square waves.
มุมมอง 77K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey there, I didn't see too many videos showing a fairly detailed breakdown of how to program a Yamaha DX7. I assume a lot of this should carry directly over to a DX9/11 and pretty much any other FM synthesizer. I'm going to treat this like you don't really know much about what you are getting yourself into, I find too many people try to scare people off from getting to know these machines sayi...
thanks
Cool
I can imagine in the 1980's people loading up their 80's car and their 80's box with a DX7 inside and going 80 miles back to the music store to return their newly purchased DX7. Anyone with a day job really don't have time deal with that did they give the manual to their mother to help them understand it 🤣🤣
I like how this guy has got this down to a science and willing to demonstrate in this manner that even his rhetorical questions are inviting which 99 percent of the time I find annoying in people that do, but not from this genius.💯
Great tutorial but I’d love if you got a stand for the camera. Feeling a bit dizzy here 😂
The Operator is the one you hear. The Modulator is the part that wiggles the Operater. The Operater has its own envelope generators, as does the Modulator. Its kind of like LFO applied to a traditional VCO, the difference is the modulation is far faster. There are no filters on traditional FM synths, but you can get similar effects to filtering (theres tutorials on TH-cam).
Cool info since i am considering buying a dx7
Great video, thank you!
It is very easy to follow tutorial. It also covers most essential sounds in a brief.
18.40 - before it gets going with SYNTHESIZERY sounds.
How do you add the effects? Is that on the dx7?
nice1 - Next maybe Pitchenvelope? Big up
Great tutorial Tnx
Excellent!!! Learned a lot! Can you make a video on setting the pitch Bend wheel? Please???!!!
I would love to but I sold all my hardware synths a few years back, didn't find myself using them enough. Sorry!
@@nitroxiii Sorry to hear that. You did great on the videos you produced. Grretings and thanks!!!
@@AbrEvig i gotcha if you still need to know
@@billy7889 Still wanna know!!!
@@AbrEvig So! Pick your patch. any one will do. then, hit the brown function key (in this case, it is the only key that is brown) then hit the third green button on the right side of the lcd panel, key number 3, which says "range" and "pitch bend" underneath it. In this setting you can change how many notes the pitch bender will bend the note in either direction. Choose between 1-12 on the lcd screen, using the data entry slider to the left. If it is at 0, the pitch control won't work. The fourth green key on the right of the panel controls your steps. Press that, and it will give you options for your steps. for a smooth bend all the way up or down chromatically, set it at 1 using the data entry slider. for "breaks" in between notes adjust upwards of that accordingly. Hope that helps!
Big Appreciation for this... PLS do more!
Amazing tutorial. Thank you Sir!
Hey, thx a lot for all the tutorials! I have a question: I can't enter the Level Mode in the Enveloppe Generator. Do you know what this could cause? thx!
And then you can add fx 😊
best tutorial for beginners ! thanks a lot
gracias!!!!
Very helpful. I got a good deal on a TX7. I've been having fun with the presets, but might get the DX7, since the programming on the TX7 isn't as accessible.
Programming isn't as accessible as on DX7!? How is that even possible, if DX7 has been voted for one of the most impossible synths to program!? :D But I got a solution! Arturia DX-7 VST has much easier interface to create sounds with it. Now if only I knew anything about FM-synthesis, that would be awesome. But this tutorial video helped a lot.
Miss that music
This was wonderfully informative. I wish I had this resource in 1988 when I had my DX7. I was clueless!!! Incredible how powerful FM is.
LOL...with the right programming, the DX7 can have better analog sounds than the virtual analog :D
You can do techno with fm synthesis but it's tricky in my opinion
Nice one bro!
Mine won't play two notes at the same time 💀
seems like yours is in monophonic mode. look up page six of the user manual to change it into polyphonic
I couldn’t find what you were talking about are you sure it’s on the Service manual?
@@lamerasica nah I just needed to make it not be mono any more
Great tutorial! Thank you!
19:33 nice effects what are you using
A simple ping-pong delay. I had both devices connected to a mixer which would then send the audio out to a cheap multi-fx pedal. Might've had Reverb too.
@@nitroxiiiI bet there was some reverb too? And WAAAAYY too much delay for my taste! :P Sounded a bit like Roland effects?
Muy buen video. que gran teclado.Te felicito. Acá un video utilizando los sonidos del yamaha DX7 en un korg volca fm: th-cam.com/video/tGk5ow7VK_Y/w-d-xo.html
Awesome vid!! Love to see more dx lessons from you!
You are good!
ugh. Is Mayonnaise An Instrument? This is so confusing and frustrating Ill just stick to downloading the roms to the instrument instead. All I want is a bank that comes with all the iconic good fm sounds (some eps, the harmonica, flute, lately bass, solid bass, rubber fretless bass, some nice synth bells and brass but I can't find anything like that in the huge pack of rom dumps that I downloaded for some reason. I thought Id try learning how to just program the missing sounds into an existing .syx rom that has most of what I want already in it myself but no its hard as hell. rom1a has almost everything I want for making oldschool r&b and vaporwave but the harmonica, lately bass, at least 2 more ep variations, some more punchy basses and a juno type bell that I want are missing. Idealy Id like to overwrite the football wistle, the 2 not ep pianos and the organ and replace those with lately bass, harmonica, and other better iconic sounds. Is there some sofware that I can consolidate all the sounds I want from existing roms and compile them into a rom of 32 all good sounds?
Dexed, a free virtual instrument that recreates the DX7 sounds, has a pretty intuitive interface and I believe it works with the original files. You could use that instrument to edit your cartridges and load them into your DX7. I don't know if that helps, truth be told I am very new to this and I don't own a DX7 😅.
You sound whiny and lazy
@@minhnhatnguyen7908 true that's why the synthesizer is their learn how to program sounds not asking people for synth instrument presets
shouldnt have bought a dx7 then, its a notoriously hard synth to program, its not for everyone
I have the cartridges with the sounds you need downloaded. Did not think it was hard
Thanks! Amazing tutorial.
Potumento
23:35 ima need this later
Interesting video, thanks
Read the manual..play with the buttons!
Just programmed a sound for the first time following your tutorial - super helpful, has totally opened up the synth for me. Cheers!
I think it would be helpful to have had an oscilloscope running so we could see the wave shapes.
youre an F'n hero man. well done vid. thank you.
Is it possible to program (brethy dounds) on the DX-7 such as flutes, glass voices, soft voices or wind sounds? Could you do a tutorial on this?
I can recommend the Power DX7 channel for tons of FM programming stuff, including tutorials.
@@rrocktoo thanks!
how do we do 1:15 on a mk2 IIfd? reset the sound
My dad got one in the spring of '84 - I was 11. In '85 I knew how to program this thing before I knew what subtractive synthesis was :)
Is there anyway i can get the electric guitar sound
I thought my Casio CZ-101 was a hassle to program.... DAMN... the Casio actually seems very intuitive after I watched this. This shit is straight up Greek. I can see why most people never bothered with anything but the presets.
What about the Yamaha Reface DX with its one-touch controls and multitude of sliders?
@@aycc-nbh7289 I haven't owned this nor the reface version. Just watching this seemed really overly complicated.
@@aycc-nbh7289 I have both and the reface doesn’t sound like the original .. but is really cool af
Thanks. It’s been very useful. 👍👍
How do I add some release ?
Turn up the release level and turn down the release rate.
19:25 how did you add the effects?
I kind of glossed over that by accident. I had a multi-fx unit connected to my mixer and I sent the audio from the DX7 into it, basically flipped a switch on my mixer, no effects on the DX7 itself from what I can remember.
thnks dude i just got a dx7 and trying to learn so i can make evil synthwave lol
@dylan fenton Quick question, all the function keys on my DX7 seem to work. With the exception of Edit Recall and Voice Init. This sucks since I cant even begin to create any sounds at all. What can I do?
Don't think I can answer that sadly. I didn't own my DX7 for very long, but I'd guess your best is to see if you can find someone in your area that's got some expertise fixing synthesizers, see if they can give an approximate quote, it may end up being cheaper buying another dx7 than getting it repaired, I wouldn't know though, sorry.
