A Year in the Woods
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 พ.ค. 2024
Rejuvenating an old wood for nature and pheasant shooting. Having taken on a small DIY shoot in Cornwall in Spring 2024, follow me as we try to recover and restore habitat, manage wild growth in the woodland and create space, light and growth for wild species and for our pheasants. Watch as we learn new skills, re discover old techniques and attempt to rebuild on a shoestring. There will be highs and lows no doubt, frustrations and successes!
Guns On Pegs Shooting Hero winner Philip Povey
At the Game Fair, George and Chris from Guns On Pegs Podcast presented the nominations for the Shooting Hero award kindly donated by a loyal listener. Philip Povey was the winner, specially noted for the efforts he has made bringing non-shooting colleagues to the sport through annual events as well as personal coaching and encouragement. Part of the prize was a day's shooting and Philip chose Branches Park Estate. Here, Jake, our host and head honcho at Kudu River Gundogs, interviews Philip and Gemma (shoot account manager at GOP) about the experience at branches. Enjoy

Jake invited me to a mini driven experience day at #BranchesPark to enjoy a bit of shooting and more importantly the splendid food, hospitality and accommodation at Branches. Weather turned cold, wet and very windy and those pheasant on the edge of the fens fly very differently to the birds back home! Certainly put me in my place!! Johnnies Ginger Thing!!!!

So, George Browne challenged me on the latest episode of the Guns On Pegs podcast to try to create guest Johnathan Young's shoot day tipple, the eponymous Johnnie's Ginger Thing and without a hard and fast recipe and with a rashness and enthusiasm for all things booze, I leapt at the chance! Will let you know how it tastes in a couple of days!!! #gunsonpegs #drinks #homebrew
Cracking day!!!
มุมมอง 1.7Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Despite the rather wet start to the day, everyone was excited to meet up for our second main day on our little farm syndicate - we had a couple of experimental drives to try out which will need some work but as the weather improved, the shooting improved culminating in a truly memorable drive on the last!!! This is small-bag shooting but it's all about the friendships, time in the field and har...

Sick of rats and rain ruining grain in sacks in previous years, we thought we'd have a go at making a watertight grain silo out of a spare IBC using a trailer grain chute, some swearing and plenty of of expanding foam! I ordered from DevonDeer.com steaks, sausages and antler pieces for the dogs from their red deer herd on the farm in Devon. So well packaged and such tasty looking produce I had to share! They even added some venison jerky! Go and order yours today! Great stuff and so local!

Cracking job. Best one yet, liked the bass guitar 👏
Really enjoyed the video, just one small criticism. I found the music was far too loud look forward to the next video 👍👍👍
Thanks Archie, will tone it down in future
Love the videos. This was special...
Hell of a few days wasn't it!
Perfect day mate, what it’s all about , see you in January 👍👍
Thanks David - smiles all round! Can't wait for January!
Cracking video and what a great day. Reward for all your effort Look forward to the next. Had my fourth day at weekend a lot better with leaves off and birds flying stronger
Thanks! Heart was in my mouth with the early slow drives but we haven't had a drive like the last in too may years! Worth all the effort and spurs us to do more next year! How are your days going? Agree it's getting better as the leaves FINALLY drop!
Its all ways nice to be out even if the weather's not great. 👍👍
Couldn't agree more!!!
Perfect day thanks all
Team effort! Thanks to everyone for doing their bit (apart from me who shot like an arse!)
Really appreciate the music, usually it's 'canned' from other sites.
What do you do with the carcass'? donate them to homeless shelters, retirement centers?
eat team takes for her ferrets, some go in the fox tube
Looks like the greys are overwhelming the feeders and leaving nothing for the rest.
yeah. they are everywhere! Doing our best to get the numbers down
Nice , love to hear the banter ,the music is so not necessary,
Will do the next one in a longer style without the music! Thank you for watching though, hope you'll enjoy future efforts - we're out agin on Saturday but it looks like it'll be pouring rain!
Great work over run wi black&white like us in Yorkshire there in every field in high numbers
Had to turn the sound off, it was terrible 😵💫🤪🙄. Just happy people laughing and talking on a day out 😀😃😄, better 👏👏
Agree the music isn't for everyone so will try to mix it up and do some with and some without. Thanks for watching though!
Obnoxious music. Disrespectful to the game - and viewers.
I don't agree it's disrespectful - I totally accept it might not be to your taste but I think it does show a group of friends from all age groups enjoying a day in the countryside and benefitting from all the hard work in habitat management over the course of the year - I try to mix it up and do some with music and some without. I hope you'll watch some of my other films to see there is no disrespect for the people, the sport, the birds or the land.
Great video. A reward for all your your hardwork. Hope you have a great season. I run a similar size shoot and have really enjoyed your films keep up the good work
Thanks! Really appreciate it! How's your season going?
Only done 2 days but great so far. Hopefully leaves will be off and birds will fly stronger
@@privateaccount2396 couldn't agree more!
Looks like a good first day. Hope all enjoyed it but I must agree with the comment about the music. Either loose the music or something other than Rap. Driven shooting and Rap 🤔. God video though
Take your point and I try to mix it up a bit - I wanted to have a short, fast film with plenty of energy to celebrate a good first day in the field and I hope, despite the choice of song, you saw how the hard work has paid off and how our little shoot has brought so many people together of all ages and that we've harvested fresh wild food to eat and enjoy! Will lay off the rap for a bit!!!
@ other than the Rap I enjoyed your vidio. I know all to well how much hard work goes into providing a good day for guns. Well done 👍
@@steveoneill6492 Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Well there's a year wasted,how horrible.
Sorry it's not your thing but how can the year be wasted when we've done so much to improve the habitat and increase wildlife on the farm?
@A_Year_In_The_Woods surely I don't have to explain the damage done by the millions of non native game birds released into the countryside,if I have to explain then your addiction has taken hold.
@@Johnsmyth1 I'd really like the opportunity to discuss the pros and cons with you but perhaps this isn't the forum?
@@A_Year_In_The_Woods ok your being polite, which is uncharacteristic for a gun wielder, so we'll leave it.
@@Johnsmyth1 OK, I do see your side too and am very conscious that everything we do has to have a net benefit to the environment we operate in. I think we probably both have the same outcome at heart for our wildlife but have different approaches to how best to achieve it. Thank you too for your level comments and I hope not all "gun wielders" you come across are impolite!
🎉🎉🎉 Fantastic ! Congrats
Thank you! Cheers!
You need to lose the music
Take your point - try to do some short ones to music and the more in depth ones without - hope you stick with me!
Perfect day my friend , that crosser was lovely 👍👍
Thanks David, I was a bag of nerves until a few birds were in the cart! That crosser was the icing on the cake!!!
Good video.where is the clay shoot located?
Thank you! He's located near North Hill, Launceston, Cornwall
Nice work on the fox , they say dont fox on a full moon but I've had some good nights on a full moon 🦊👍
I did feel a bit disheart3ened when the clouds parted and the moon shone full but on this occasion, Mr Fox hadn't read the same books!
Good effort. There's always squirrels and Foxes to deal with. Birds are looking very good.
Thank you! It's like painting the Forth road bridge - never ending!!! Very pleased with the birds this year, let's hope they hang around!
You have a sparrowhawkate nothing you can do
Yup, very true.
Great video run a small shoot similar. Google hedgewitch may help you with ticks etc
Straw is always the trick along with whistling but not with a commercial whistle! Iv known poachers copying the whistle and shooting birds off the Straw feed rides!
Agree with you it isn't an ideal solution but as a DIY club we have a number of people going down to feed so wanted to have a "standard" feeding whistle - we're off the beaten track so hopefully Johnnie Poacher won't find us!
Nice work on the foxes I was covering partridge pens last night from a educated fox it had to go nice video mate 🦊👍
thanks mate - still got some work to do! Keep on protecting those pens fellla!
A great day of fun - much the best way of shooting clays. Well filmed, Avian, and your words above sum it up well!
Thank you Greorge
Excellent !
Many thanks!
We need to get your two lads started!!
Big Day 🎉 looks great
Thanks! Big for us yes! Hope we can keep them happy!!!
Realy injoy these Video's pal, please keep them coming & all the Best buddy👍
Thanks mate, that means a lot to me! Love making them and thrilled you enjoy them!!
Turn the music off
Will do on the next one Mick!
@@A_Year_In_The_Woods Hello excellent video i have hunting videos on youtube
@@HuntinginLebanon94 Thanks! I will take a ook at your videos!
No need for the crappy music in your video just film what your shooting so that we can hear what your saying about your day pigeon and crow shooting. If we want to listen to music we can all tune in to the music channel.
Fair point, will bear in mind for next video. Thanks!
Just found your channel good stuff keep it up
thank you so much! Really appreciate the support!
A weighted metal lid keeps losses to birds to a minimum (peanuts aren't cheap !) - and if it rains, also helps keep your nuts dry.... ;-)
I agree! Looking to upgrade the feeders soon as the buggers have chewed through the top as well. Need a redesign! Considering all metal stations. Agree peanuts aren't cheap nut don't mind providing some food for the birds TBH. Thanks so much for the comment.
@@A_Year_In_The_Woods No worries - enjoyed the video. I've tried everywhere from farm supply shops to wholesalers, but the cheapest peanuts I can find are £22 for 12.5 kg from B&Ms etc.
@@wolfysmith4752 and they sel out so quickly! I've often had to pay £41 a bag!!!!
@@A_Year_In_The_Woods That's true - I've tried diluting the peanuts down with cheaper seeds, but the little bastards just chuck them on the floor and eat the peanuts, so the seed is wasted...
Great stuff, keep at it.
Thanks! Got to take the numbers of greys down as they are ruining the young trees bu bark stripping!
Good job 👍🏼 keep it up
Thanks Andrew!
Faaaack!
Rasing the water pipe will stop the squirrel damage but will increase the water temperature in the pipe increasing the risk of disease in the water so if you put acid in the drinking water at the right dose it's safe for the birds to drink and will help stop any problems Keep up the great work Love these videos
Thanks Paul, good point - I've got a pH testing kit I use so will keep an eye on that!
Good work, just subbed.
Many thanks for the sub! Working on the next installment! Everything is growing like crazy!
Nice to see ash trees though; that means the soil is basic. You'll never know the pain of trying to control rhododendrons, for one thing; for another the diversity should be very good indeed.
We are thick with rhododendrons in the other wood! Dreading that! Hoping our ash trees don't succumb - we've got some lovely specimens!
I'm mid Cornwall based with a focus on Deer. I've just invited in a thermal monocular. What a game changer. That looks like a mega moderator! Good to see a focus on wildlife management. Keep it up. 🙂
Many thanks for the support! Yeah, thermal really is a game changer, wouldn't be without it now! Pricey but invaluable - problem is, I'm itching to upgrade now!!!
@@A_Year_In_The_Woods I’m sure Ian Hodge will welcome an upgrade. 😂 look like you have good one already, so gotta be minimal scope for improvement.
Love it ❤🎉
Thank you Lorraine - rather splendid isn't she!
Great episode, really informative, your passion for the entire woodland and not only for the release of game really comes through. For me it shows how country folk enjoy our way of life. Extremely knowledgeable about the land - looking forward to following A Year In The Woods.
Many thanks! Delighted you're enjoying the episodes
Looks Great !
Thanks! Hope the boys enjoy it!
