An introduction to The Travelling Bookbinder
The is a very good demonstration. I am just learning and this video was extremely helpful. Thank you for sharing.
SO glad the video was helpful - happy binding!
I recently took a bookbinding class and immediately fell down that rabbit hole. I somehow, in the course of further research, found you, Rachel, and became even more obsessed. Your videos, your methods, your clear instruction, and your wonderful book, "Bound" have become my go to. "Bound" is bedtime reading - I love that book. A trip to one of your classes is now on my bucket list, besides, I've always wanted to go to Scotland and what better excuse than one of your classes. Lindy in northwest lower Michigan near the northern shore of Lake Michigan.
Aw Lindy! SO delighted to read this, and that you've discovered bookbinding - hurray! Hopefully you've subscribed to The Travelling Bookbinder's newsletter, so you'll hear soonest about the Iona Driftwood Binding Retreats next year. Sending best and bookiest to you in Michigan, Rachel
Thank you! I used tweezers cause I was scared to use my fingers 😅
For the life of me, I cannot fathom why you don't have more subscribers, likes & comments. Your explanations are clear, precise & to the point. Your voice is soothing to listen to and the videography is just splendid. I'm definitely subscribing and hope to see more videos soon! Thank you 😊
Ah Emma, Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the film, and found it useful, Rachel
Great video! I try to do this myself as a stress relief activity. I struggle with gluing my fingers and transferring the glue marks on the book cloth...most of the time when I'm almost ready...and ruin the job. I don't know how, but many times I simply work in some kind of rush being afraid that the adhesive will start to dry before I manage to put the parts together. Is there any way to remove PVA glue from book fabric or paper?
I have the book and pondered the sentence, “Paper always curls to the grain direction” for a long time because it doesn’t help me get to next step. Is the grain along the curl strip or along the straight strip? I think the grain is along the straight strip, but wish the instruction is more clear.
So with card (for book board) using the moisture test, the edge that it warps, is that the grain direction?
Thanks for the information 😊
Big pleasure!
Do you know how to bookbind paper from a manual typewriter? 1 page at a time as it seems.
Any kind of binding that uses single sheets, like a japanese stab binding (that you can find in Bound: 15 Beautiful Bookbinding Projects, published by Kyle X
Thank you! x
Ha ha! i guess it's not a device that helps you fold your bones up like i was thinking at first ~*~Peace, Love, and Cremly~*~
ha ha ha
I love your driftwood journal
Hey! I was wondering if you have the written dialogue for this? It’s a perfect video to show my students. Some of them speak other languages so I want to create a translation resource :)
Jou are the BEST!!
Heh heh i'm glad to hear that! - Thank you
I love this video. I design and make leather handbags. I use fiber board or bontex etc. grain direction is so important. ❤
Hurray
Wow, thanku very much.
Ah such a pleasure!
this channel is such a delight ⭐
I have to agree with Javaman ... too often the basics of paper crafting are not shared. Your video is precise and beautifully filmed. Super easy to follow and explains how and why a bone folder is a must-have tool in my arsenal! Thank you!
Delighted! X r
I'm surprised no one has commented, your videos are well done and to the point. So often the very basics are not told, people who know forget that others may not figure it out. I agree about how handy a bone folder is, don't leave home without it. lol
Kind of you to comment! Glad you're a bone folder fan
Thank you! That’s a perfect video.
This video make me travel, in my French garden I had a Spanish publicity and know this amazing video thanks you for tips

I have a book from you, I love it!
Hurray for Bound and for books!
This video has been very helpful for me as I am just getting started. I want to begin by sewing exposed style bindings but I just didn't know which weight of thread would be best. You provided the answer. Thank you.
Love it ! Do glad I found u
Hurray!
Rachel, I first met you on Sketchbook Revival 2022 and you absolutely gave me a brand new and delightful experience. I enjoyed your class so much and thank you for your generous gift.
Oh i'm so glad to know that! Thank you for writing and hurray for Sketchbook Revival!
Helpful and well made video.
Hurray!
Excellent. Thank you.
Thanks Geri!
Finally i found One! 😭🎉
So glad!
Loved this video! I'm getting some linen thread now. Will normal cotton sewing thread work if it's all you have?
Great! Thank you. Thin cotton thread can snap, so hopefully your linen thread will arrive soon. Turns out that dental floss can be used in an emergency...
Such a calming film, and beautiful words of yours! I am taking Sarah's Life in Motion class at the moment and loving it.
So happy to hear this Diana! And delighted that you're loving Sarah's brilliant class
Thanks for safe handling of a scalpel blade.
What a pleasure it is Bryan
More people need to see this, it's so informative.
Thank you Harrison, I agree!
Can poster board papers direction's be determined by these methods?
Try it and see! Not sure what you mean by poster board paper, but all paper and board have a grain direction. Good luck!
My ambition is to one day do a book binding course with you. I know it would change my life.🤞🤔💛
Oh Jo thank you! I hope your wish comes true
Was looking for info on booking binding threads, and I finally found you. I wasn’t some on who understood tat I didn’t want to j
Hello Sheryl! Here's info on bookbinding threads: th-cam.com/video/tkfzMl31oKQ/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugyp9XMWZ2bY2OMPdKd4AaABAg
I bought your book a year or so ago, what a great book! thank you!
Aw Donna - that's great to hear. Delighted that you're enjoying Bound!
Hello there Rachel! I am so pleased I found you from the UPPERCASE magazine and community. I wasn't intending on leaving a comment, not because I don't share the same sentiment as others here but I tend to prefer being in the background. What pushed me to comment is because I noticed your website in your description is missing a 'b.' It's such a small thing but since I had tried to (be lazy and) copy & paste your website I figured other people probably would as well. I love the ocean and surfing. I am especially delighted to have discovered you and bookbinding as the various bullet journaling and decorating never quite spoke to me, I never knew why, but when I saw your site, I loved the idea right away. Anyhoo, me ke aloha, and mahalo from Maine, USA!
love it. thank you so much!
Such a pleasure Serena!

Lovely! I’ve signed up! : )) X
Hurray Mo! And thank you X
Clear, helpful and encouraging, as she always is, as she generously shares her skills. Thanks, Rachel.
Delighted dear Susan, Thank you, Rachel
Lovely! Thank you Rachel. I have been looking for waxed linen thread this week but during lock down and not being able to visit a shop, it is hard to get an idea of thickness of the threads from photographs. I couldn’t work out what the numbers meant so thank you so much for your helpful video x o x
Dear Mog, What a pleasure to be able to help - hope you'll soon get the the perfect thread! Rachel XX
@@thetravellingbookbinder9265 Yes thank you! After lots of searching online I finally found a thread that I think will be suitable for what I’m doing and co-incidently it is being sold by an artist I'm following on Instagram so that was even nicer! I love that synchronicity! Thanks so much again for you beautiful videos. Everything about the way you present your work is just gorgeous X
Amazing video. I’ve struggled with gluing, and now I see what I’ve been doing wrong. Plan to work my way through the projects in Bound this winter, and meeting you in Iona one day is on my bucket list.
Delighted dear Mystery BookSleuth - Happy gluing, and binding! Have fun with Bound, and thanks for your message
What is the diameter of your brush and the length of bristles? It’s a beauty.
