Have you ever shaped one of these into a tree?
I've been working on it, I named her Victoria, but poor thing is growing crooked lol I need to trim more the one side. I can upload a photo to the Tab here in the channel
Great video! I planted 50 desert willow after soaking them in water for a few weeks. Your video confirmed that I did it right. It even works without rooting powder but it will help for sure. They grow so fast once they get started. In two years they reached over 6 feet tall. Some of course were eaten by animals but I'm learning to protect them when they are young.
This comment makes me happy! Mine are doing well, but yes, they were attacked by deer, some were knocked down by squirrels! But some are still standing and growing! In my case, I have a wire fence wrapping the baby trees, so the deer leave them alone. I hope your trees grow beautifully! Thanks for visiting!
@@TheLivingBackyard Sounds like we have gone through the same problems and solutions. It's never easy to plant trees successfully but you gotta keep trying. I'm hoping one day to create a willow tree fence to keep the off-roading vehicles off my property.
@@ErezSegal Oh my goodness that sounds terrible! (having vehicles on your property, that is) I'm thinking that the very least you could have some fence posts with yellow tape? At least that could be something? Another tree/bush is the chinaberry but it's not native, however, it grows a bunch supposedly, and hardly needs any water...?
I live in NY and have to Repot mine but she's big so how so I do it without hurting her? I can't put her in the ground because she will die. I say she...but it could be a he. Lol. Its a slow growing plant...especially up here but the base is multiplying. Have had her 10 years but she's maybe the size of the one in this video...but in a pot.
First I'd like to ask, why you think it is necessary? Is the pot actually small, like to make it fall? To re-pot, you need a planter that is strong for that size, and perhaps a few inches deeper, and wider. I have not done a re-potting, but I have moved Sago Palms before to a different flowerbed. Find something to wrap around the sharp leaves or if the leaves are yellowing, just clip them off, it will grow new ones. Once you wrap it for your safety, then (depending on de weight!) have someone help you if it's heavy, or do it yourself: lay the planter on the side, and drag it away from the plant. in other words, do not pull the on plant. Prepare the new planter with fresh soil that has good drainage, and they like sand too. Then pick up the sago, sit it straight on the new planter, making sure the trunk is not covered in soil, that is important! Just the bottom part that was under, is the part that goes back to be covered again. Press the soil very well, and you can add rocks for the top layer. Preferable have the new planted on a base with wheels, so you can move it if necessary. PS To know if it is a male or female, you need to check if it puts out a "tower" in the top center, that's where the pollen is produced, that would be a male. If it makes red/orange fruit in the top center, that is a female. Those fruits are toxic to dogs if they eat them. I hope this helps!
@TheLivingBackyard thanks so muvh for getting back to me. Ive reported her (him) a couple times. I thought I needed to do it again because it's growing extra bulbs like the ones you're showing. She has never produced fruit so I guess Helenea is a He.😂 I'll just call him He-man now. Lol! I did just clio the more yellow stems off and immediately the others lifted the next day. So I think he's on the uo and up now. Maybe I don't have to repot him? I just thought since new parts are growing they would have to be detached. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again for getting back to me! Oh...I never used sand or rocks. I'll have to do that. I've just used soil and feed him a few times in summer. I water weekly unless it's winter...then he needs less when he's inside.
@@applesofgold2622 Check this video, this particular Sago is a female, and those are the seeds. It doesn't have them each year. I'm guessing it is about 10 years old. The new plants growing at the bottom are called "pups" like dogs. No idea why lol They can be separated carefully, leaving as much of their trunk, so you can replant it If you want to, upload a photo in your channel, in the Tab for Posts and tag me, so I can see it? If the planter is wide enough, you don't have to re-pot at all! 😁
I had my volume low, and at first, I thought all of the plastic was to keep the deer away haha! Looking forward to your review video!
You know what? It's starting to sound like a good option!! LOL

Hi Martha! Merry Happy Christmas to you and your family, my friend! ❤
Same to you Kristen!! Have a beautiful, wonderful Christmas!
Thank you you were quick efficient and gave me something I could use. I’m in zone 6 and l have lost one of my braided gardenia tress I have two others growing and l found your recipe more complete then any others that I’ve come to you didn’t say go out and buy this formula or go out and do this. You use something natural that is quick absorbing into the plant and is not foreign thank you thank you thank you. I’m subbing to you now even though you’re in a different zone you may have advices for other plants that I grow because I also grow orchids inside thank you very very much
I'm very happy it helped! Gardenias are so wonderful! You know, Orchids are one plant I have not collected. I had one long ago but I haven't gotten into them, they are beautiful too. Welcome on board! Thank you!

I don’t use coffee. I use “rice water”. Rice is our staple food. Before cooking, I rinse rice and use that “starchy” water for my gardenias. Works well 👍🏻
I’ve never tried that, but it sounds like a great idea, thanks for sharing!
There is no way to mask the frustration in your voice. It seems this has been a very challenging garden year for you. I'm sorry my friend.
No kidding! and that's not counting the cutting ants, and other pests! lol
My Gardenia is a pain in the neck. Yellow leaves, many buds, all falling, no flowers. Little water, more water same effect. Full sun, limited sun, same.
Yes, they can be very persnickety! I had one in a past house that was huge and always full of flowers, so when we moved I planted another one and ever since it's been picky picky picky. Try to see if the one you have is the best for your weather, even if they well it locally. Also, if you have it in a pot, check the soil, because sometimes "June bugs" or similar beetles will leave their eggs by your plant, and then the larvae eats the roots! And we will never see them because this happens under the soil. Make sure the plant has good drainage. They love water but not soggy roots.
Awesome
Thank you! So happy you visited!
This is a little bit outside of the box, but hear me out. What if you planted a deer garden, full of their favorite plants to eat, near your property edge? You could report on how well that garden is growing and how well the deer are taking to it and see if it deters them coming to your house.
Maybe I could try next year, but my husband was feeling them, they still came to destroy some plants. They are not even skinny, they are just choosy and the buck is so destructive! He knocked some baby trees, I put the cage back, and straighten them up.... he knocked down one again and ate it all. It is supposed to be one they hate! He destroyed it to just one broken stick, with roots pout of the soil. I took a video, maybe I can upload it.
@ sometimes your problem with the deer flows into my mind because I lived for 15 years in areas of Michigan that was heavily populated with deer. But we had a lot of cornfields around us so they didn’t necessarily come close to the house and tamper with the gardens. So I have experience, but yet I don’t.
@@mytinytnhomegarden Well I never lived close to them, so I have made several rookie mistakes LOL - some people around here feed them, there's one lady with donkeys, and she has a long box with deer food, but I think because of the donkey she doesn't have as many as the ones here? My other neighbors all have large dogs, and the deer stay away. I have 2 silly spoiled cats 🤪😂😅
@ you said large dogs. This morning I watched a large dog video called normal dogs versus huskies. It was too early in the morning to be laughing that hard! I would recommend you find that, you’ll forget about the deer
@@mytinytnhomegarden I will look for it! My husband showed me one of some noisy turkeys having a "protest" for thanks giving, it was funny😂
Coffee water? So you mean coffee.......
Well, in a way, but not hot, no ice, no sugar, no milk 😁 basically, coffee and water
If you want to see where this cuttings came from: th-cam.com/video/wFhDJ-Np5ew/w-d-xo.html
So far one of the best videos I've watched regarding propagation w/this plant since I can actually understand what you're saying lol. I have some cuttings and going to put them in water and excited to grow them. Are you in Texas? If so, where? I live in Central Texas. Anyway, thank you for sharing and happy growing! 😊🪴🪴
That's awesome, You are more than welcome! I'm so happy you like the video! And Yes, I'm in TX too
Nice video! Thank you showing so much detail. 😊
You are very welcome! Thanks for visiting!
Thank you..I was worried when the little leaves started turning yellow. I use coffee pods. Can I put the grounds from them in the plant with water? How often should I do this?
You are more than welcome! Yes you can add that coffee with more water. As for the frequency, I'd say every couple of weeks, but you have to check, because if your weather is very warm, you could use it like 7 to 10 days, but if it is mid winter, once a month will be enough. Also depends on your type of soil, if it drains fast etc. You could leave the coffee or tea sediments on top, so every time you water, they get to the roots. Just make sure nothing is soggy. Thanks for visiting!
Oh Martha! I’m so sorry! Was that actual deer footage you caught?
Yes I recorded that, but not when they ate everything... in the porch. Now I have a cage all around and it looks ugly, so I will have to find another solution. Always nice to see you my friend
@ your next video should be how to decorate your caged plants! Hahaha! I hope to have a garden video up this week, my year end review. Always enjoy your videos!
@@mytinytnhomegarden That is an awesome idea!! I will do it LOL thanks! - I'm looking forward to watch your video!
How often should I use the coffee and epsom salt?
I would say, depending on how strong your mix is (I make mine weak) use it every 2, 3 weeks. Don't let the plant sit in wet dirt though. Also depending on your weather. If it is very hot, 2 weeks, if very cold weather, maybe 1 a month. Thanks for visiting!
I’m sure that was a lot of work but so worth it! Looks great 🤍🤍
It was! And we are planning to re do some parts now that is is not so hot
Beautiful! 🦋
Thank you! I was very happy to catch a video on time lol
We have a lot of the same plants in our garden centers! I’m in zone 10b 🪴
I'm sure you would rarely need to cover plants in winter? Last year we had a very cold winter, and they still moved our zone to a warmer number lol Thanks for visiting!
@@TheLivingBackyard We don’t freeze here but when the temperatures drop into the 40’s a lot of plants burn but I rarely go out and cover them 🫣🤣
The last 2 winters we reached 14F weather for a few nights. Scary thing! All the palm trees from the area are gone. I covered my Sago and it survived. I wish I was in a zone 10 now lol
@@TheLivingBackyardOh no 💔 I really don’t like the heat we have most of the year but I try to tell myself I get to garden year round so that’s the payoff 🤣
@@Allthebackyardcritters How does it get? Las summer we sort of broke record, 116 index. I'm thinking, so cold and so hot, what am I doing gardening here LOL Right now I'm enjoying the fall weather but when the leaves fall, I'm not going to be so thrilled AHAHAHAH
You are the propagating queen! Occasionally, I stick cuttings in water to see if it roots, and that’s as far as I’ve ever gotten!. My daughter gave me a set of five little bud vases for my birthday last month. It’s that which I’m using for my Purple Heart cuttings to root in. Looks pretty on the kitchen counter too.
I love propagating, but I have lost so many if I live them outside, because the squirrels like gardening in my pots too 😖😁😂 So now I just want to keep stuff indoors! Those vases sound amazing!! and I hope you had a beautiful birthday! have you posted about it? Let me know if you make a video of it, I'd love to see it! I bet it looks awesome by a window? Or the table! ♥♥♥
I live in Seattle. I have outdoor gardenia on pots and the ground. How should I protect them from winter? Thanks!
I'm not really familiar with the weather over there, seems you are in zone 9a? Some Gardenias can start the cold of zone 7, but as a general rule, if you know it will freeze, like less than 32, cover the plants, potted or not, with a transparent plastic over night. A plastic painters tarp is ideal because you can cover several plants at the same time, but if they are in separate places, cover them individually. If the plastic is clear, you don't have to rush in the daytime to remove it. Like this from my affiliate link: 👉 amzn.to/3Ac1lyV Gardenias love sunlight, so, no black plastic! If it gets terribly cold, preferable bring the potted plants indoors. I myself will start doing that next door with some plants in planters. Some varieties of Gardenias can stand the cold weather better, so if you happen to know your particular variety, check how cold hardy it is, maybe you don't have to cover them so much. Thanks for visiting!
so gorgeous. So I made mine and the shape turned out beautiful. So I painted it. Looked so nice, but when I pick it up it broke. Have I missed a step in how to harden it? I had let it dry for several days.
Oh no! Was it too thin? I cannot imagine why it broke besides that reason. Sorry to hear that! The air dry clay is supposed to be a bit flexible and very durable!
@@TheLivingBackyard I was wondering if it was too thin too, but it looked as thin as yours. I will be trying again :)
What's coffee water?
It is literally coffee in water. Not hot at all. You can see how I made it at the beginning of the video. Let me know if you have more questions!
I brought cuttings from my Purple Heart to try as houseplants.
yeeesss! That's awesome, they will bring you color in the next months, and purple is always nice lol ♥
I got one of these a few months ago. This is perfect timing for me! Thank you, Martha! And then 😢. (I’m watching as I type). The plant called to you for nurturing. I love the first song that you chose by Debussy. ❤
I could not resist! I always feel I can help somethings, somehow. Even when I had decided not to get more indoor plants! lol I am preparing a video on how it is looking now, few weeks later. Always nice to see you! ♥
I haven’t looked at the garden centers in a while. It’s nice to see what’s available in your area.
Soon they will have only some random bushes lol but that'd the seasons I guess😁🌷
Feels good to play with the dirt, doesn’t it?! It feels like it’s been a long time for me. Your new plants are pretty!
Yes it does! I think I will spend more time with my indoor plants, since the &^%$^ deer ate my plants again! I hope you were FAR from the rain my friend! I know some areas had it really bad
@@TheLivingBackyard we were way on the outskirts. We got three days of “normal” rain. Much needed as we haven’t had rain in three months.
Lovely video!! ☺️ It’s always fun to admire the variety of plants in garden centers.
Thank you! 💚 Thanks for visiting 🌱 🌷 👍
wow... I love that. My elephant ears are ready and now I need some clay. Thanks for the inspiration.
You are so welcome! Thanks for visiting, I know you are going to have fun with this!
Why do the buds fall off and become dry, without flowering,
It can be several reasons, one is lack of nutrients in the soil, or extreme heat, or change of temperatures. Depending on where you live, check if you need to water more often, or use plant vitamins in the watering, or move it if possible (if it is in a pot) to an area where it is more protected from the weather and still get enough light. I hope this helps!
Can you do this with larger branches? My desert willow has shot out several branches from the crown that are still soft wood and id like to prune them off and propagate them
In my experience, the larger branch did great for a while, then gave up. I think they don't have enough strength to feed a larger branch and leaves etc.... the ones that did better were smaller, with just 2 or 3 leaves, in water. I don't know where you are located, but the propagation is better in spring, so, if you can wait till then it would help better, but if you need to do it right now and it is fall, then keep them in a sunny place indoors, because the weather, wind, bugs etc, are easier to manage like that. In my case, the squirrels dig on my experiments outside! Thanks for stopping by!
What soil mixture do you use. Do you tent cuttings in dirt with plastic.
It is soil from a store, but it is better to add Perlite to it. I didn't need to tent the cuttings because it was very warm so I kept them just by a window. If you are in a cold place you definitely benefit from tenting. Thanks for visiting!
What I was looking for 😊. Thanks for the tips.
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful and thanks for stopping by!
my rosemary plant also withered
I have noticed the strongest Rosemary is the one standing up and thicker leaves. The one thinner can't survive my winters! Thanks for visiting!
