Muhammad Asad - God Man Relationship - PART 3
Muhammad Asad's name figures prominently on the roll of 20th-century English-language Muslim thinkers. Born as Leopold Weiss into a Polish family of strong Jewish background, he was a gifted young writer and adventurous traveler who journeyed to the East to discover Islam. The result of his travels is a highly charged and brilliantly written autobiography, The Road to Mecca. He found the Muslim world an unexpected tonic: its complexities, temperament and sense of spiritual security intrigued him. Over the decades that followed, he became the most articulate and passionate of Muslim scholars and writers, devoted to the revival of his faith and its reconciliation with the modern world. He had also undertaken a translation of Sahih al-Bukhari, the collected books of Prophetic traditions, but all his translations except one were destroyed during the chaos that followed World War II.
At 80, he completed his translation and commentary of the Qur'an, The Message of the Qur'an.
The Message of the Qur'an is widely recognised as among the best English translations and commentaries of the Qur'an and comparable to the famous works of Pickthall, Yusuf Ali and Daryabadi. His rendering is simple and straightforward. Although widely known as a proponent of conservative Islam, his translation departs from the traditional exegetic approaches and reflects his deep knowledge of Jewish and Christian scriptures.
Asad's work however is difficult to obtain and expensive. The work is published in a bulky format, and is hindered by the use of small typeface. In the last three years, Islamic Book Trust began the task of re-issuing this important work in a new and attractive typeset and beautifully bound. It also boasts of a comprehensive index and uses the standard Uthmani Qur'anic script

You are correct that the concept of oneness of God and creation exists in Hinduism ( and not in eastern religions. Buddhism and Jainism are not theistic). However the very same concept exists in Islam too, and has been propagated since it's conception

When intelligent people look at the absurdities and futility of religion they often reject God, when in reality they should reject religion. It is religion that steals the identity of God's system and distorts it, while God's Way properly defines God, His System and mankind's position and role within that System. There is no religion the only System for all mankind is God's Way "Deen" a way of life intended to be a life of blissfulness without religions, myths, superstitions or satanic laws. You shall return to Him, observe Him, and uphold your commitments. Do not become idol-worshipers like those who change the way of life into ‘religion’, each sectarian is happy with what they have. 30:31-32 Follow those who do not ask from you any wage, they are guided. 36:21 If you follow the majority of the people on earth, they will divert you from the path of God. They only follow conjecture, and they only guess. 6:116 He has prescribed for you the same way of life enjoined upon Noah, and what is revealed herein, and what was decreed for Abraham, Moses and Jesus. You shall uphold the One way of life and not be divided. It is simply too difficult for the idolworshippers to accept what you advocate. God is the one who brings towards Him whomever He wills. He guides towards Himself those who return.42:13 O mankind, you shall serve your Lord who created you and those people before you that you might be observant. He is the one who made the earth habitable for you. He is the one who constructed the sky. He sends down water from the sky to produce fruits for your sustenance. Therefore, you are not to set up any idol next to God when you understand. 2:21.22

I have read the Road to Mecca and I must admit I was disappointed that Asad didn’t condemn his host Arab kings who all had slaves. Instead, Asad wrote that he loved king Abdulaziz who openly held African slaves in his palace. It was the same with the king of Jordan who also had slaves. Asad uncritically mentioned those slaves in his book and called them just as ”the negro slave” or the ”black slave”. Being Muslim myself I found hypocratic that he critisized the West for their treatment of the Arabs while completely ignoring the slavery of poor Africans in the Arab royal courts that he was living in and was full praise of.
