Modern D&D is such trash, the old school stuff is where the excitement is. If only Gary had more time to build on that instead of WoTC vandalizing his work.

Funny you'd say that. In the PC Game adaption Hommlet is a giant hub for side quests (and the only place where you really find any aside from Nulb later). It's funnily what was critisized about the game adaption the most, as it feels a bit disconnected from the Temple Stuff, even though everything ties back into it later. The cool part: Almost everything you mentioned in this video is in the game, from Furnock to the Temple Saboteurs. The dispute between Church and Druids is in that game, too. There is one interwoven quest chain consisting of several small subquests, where one character wants to remarry, but for that another has to join that faith. And then the Druid leader and the Church leader negotiate a "trade" of followers. It's quite wild. The bandit moathouse outpost is really cool, too. There is a giant pack of gnolls down there. Bugbears. The bandits themselves. The spiders. A group of imprisoned and tortured adventurers. In the game adaption at the deepest point of the moathouse is Lareth the beautiful and his cohort. And temporarily you can even take him with you, but he will backstab the players when they least expect it, entering the Temple from behind the watch tower.

They looked so different in the ToEE PC game. They were adults then, with Rannos being fat and Gremag being scruffy. But they still had their original story and it required fulfilling a questline or mid level speech / bluff / diplomacy / information gathering checks to uncover. If you do their quests blindly, you help them cause chaos / disruption in Hommlet without anyone being the wiser. If you uncover their secret and do not align with their alignment, they will first try to bribe you with a discount. If you insist on troubling them, they will try to kill you, if memory serves right. If you do share their alignment either as evil or neutral, they will help you join the temple - Either via the route to the Moathouse or by sending you off to the Earth Temple Faction. You can also help them remain undetected by lying to Burny and Rufus. If you just leave them be, they will just stay in their shop 24/7 and continue selling you basic goods and that terrible lvl 1 mercenary (I think it was a low lvl temple guard disguised as mercenary). Keeping them around as shopkeepers is mechanically the best option, as the rewards for doing their quests / killing them are rather low and you'll eventually run out of shop inventory space in Hommlet if you keep selling your treasure to Otis. So that's what I always used them as. Store NPC bots. Do their quest. Uncover their secret. Keep it quiet. Haggle a discount. Keep em in town. I forgot if they actually catch wind of you cleansing the temple or not. If memory serves, they don't.

Temple of Elemental Evil is my favorite of all time. I've ran it once and I've played it under two DMs for a total of four times. Once it was just me and the DM and I outfitted a party tailor made for that dungeon ( two elf clerics ) and still got stomped. Once we played with 3.5 edition characters and the monsters kept 1e stats and still got stomped. Hint: It's not the hack n slash dungeon crawler it appears to be. And if you've ever run it, you just cannot play it. *Unless you can keep your mouth shut knowing the party is walking into a TPK.

Really well done, you two do a great job of explaining why Grey hawk is so addictive instead of the complaint that it was generic.

Look up his "Potters of Firsk." Makes a great RPG adventure. Ran it at home and at 2 cons in sci-fi, but fantasy works too. Try cobalt for blue. Players are too hesitant to mess with uranium.
