The Exorcist turns 50 this week, so we invited Marlena Williams, author of Night Mother: A Personal and Cultural History of the Exorcist, to come tell us about the little possession movie that changed America forever. Was the set cursed by Satan himself, or plain old 70s misogyny? What makes a country going through a cultural upheaval embrace stories about the Devil? And-the most critical quest...

Wait... where are all the comments on this topic? Personally I would call it sexting if someone sent me some kind of message that we both thought was sexy - for whatever reason. At my advanced age, "Dear, don't forget to run by the grocery and get some "big" donuts" would qualify... and good luck to zealous prosecutors attempting to make me change my behavior so they can run for reelection by being "hard" on crime... which, by itself, is a rather lewd idea...

By the way, this person who is associated from her father, who knew Karen as as a drummer, Karen can do all 26 rudiments for their eyes shut without a heartbeat. The only person that would probably know her is Frankie Chavez who is high school prodigy the kids started playing the drums when he was about 10 at Golden high school in Downeyand then got into the band. Both Frankie and Karen were very talented drummers to see if you can figure that out for yourself. I know the whole history more than you know JAMES SAVAGE.

So sad that Marie Antoinette was scrutinized the way she was. Marie Antoinette was not a fan of the French government’s traditional policies. It is said she looked very uncomfortable at “le grand couvert.” This was a public ritual at the French court where the royal family dined in front of courtiers and sometimes even members of the public. In terms of the “Affair of the Diamond Necklace” The person who forged Marie Antoinette’s name in the infamous Affair of the Diamond Necklace was Jeanne de la Motte. Jeanne was a con artist who convinced the Cardinal de Rohan that she was a close friend of the queen and could secure a deal for an expensive diamond necklace. She used a forged letter to deceive the cardinal into believing Marie Antoinette was involved in the purchase. This scandal damaged the queen’s reputation, even though she was innocent of any involvement. Marie Antoinette was very quiet and stoic during most of her trial. It wasn’t until they accused her of incest with her son she was deeply outraged and responded with indignation. She said: “If I have not replied, it is because Nature itself refuses to respond to such a charge laid against a mother. I appeal to all mothers who may be present in this courtroom.” The court then took back those accusations. She never said “Let them eat cake” it was said by another Queen. It was written in a book and published 7 years before she became Queen. France had massive debt due to the many wars France was involved in including the 7 Years war. (1756-1763) King Louie the 15th was melting gold around the palace to pay for some of his debts. These debts were inherited from the previous kings. But getting involved in the American Revolution didn’t help either. When you look at her life, it’s sad and she tried to navigate the life of the French court as best as she could without creating scandals. There was an immense amount of pressure for her to become pregnant on top of that. She didn’t become pregnant for 7 years after being Married to Louie the 16th. Her mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria sent her son Joseph II to help consummate her marriage writing and urging her daughter to produce a male heir to the French throne. You have to feel really bad for her because she had really no choice. Going to a complete different country with different rules and etiquette to marry someone she wasn’t really even attracted to and had nothing in common with at the age of 15. It was more politically motivated than anything else to call a truce with France and Austria. I feel like she was living in a fantasy life, trying to spend her way out of her sadness. She was likely happiest when pretending to be a peasant on a farm. Which also tells the age old quote “Money and Riches don’t buy happiness.” Here’s a fun little tid-bit, After she became Queen she sent for her dog Mops and was reunited with him. They didn’t allow her to take anything Austrian with her even her dogs. But she sure did make sure to get her dog. Madam Du Berry actually bounced after she became Queen and went to England to live her life. She went back during the Period of time called the “Great Terror” when they were executing anyone associated with the French monarchy. She was captured and beheaded. She was one of the most dramatic at the gulliotine begging for her life to be spared and was yelling and going unwillingly to her death. Do you blame her? I feel like it was foolish for her to go back. A lot of Europeans bought disease to the new world. A lot of indigenous peoples and tribes didn’t have a lot of diseases that Europeans had including STD’s. The natives were more cleaner than the aristocrats and noblemen. And ate a-lot better. The natives taught Europeans how to farm and grow vegetables they never even heard of.

I really loved this pair of episodes. You both this story told with so much compassion and empathy. It's such a remarkable story on a scale I can't imagine that the world has seen too often, and you discuss it with such delicate and empathetic detail. I love how you focussed in on the humanity of the situation, when all I've ever heard of prior to this is "those cannibals who crashed in the Andes". These were people in a dire and desperately unimaginable situation and you conveyed that beautifully.

If true, that should cast his complicity, or lack thereof, in a new light.

Great video! One point of information. You're wrong about (sorry had to say it) us funding the Taliban agians the Soviets. We funded the mujahideen, which was the Muslim/Afghan resistance to the Soviets and the Soviet-backed regime. The Taliban wasn't a thing yet. After the Soviet defeat, we basically did not stay involved to help rebuild and the Taliban took over after years of civil strife. Also, before 9/11 Bin Laden was famous. He wasn't a household name, but I, as someone who knows a lot less a bout that part of the world than he did, was well aware who he was after 1998. In that year, (I could be off by a year) President Clinton struck targets in Africa in retaliation for Al Qaeda strikes) on US targets. I think you are right, however, that he got a raw deal. As a Seattleite, I love the Sonics Howard Schultz analogy.

Wonderful episode. One small correction. As you state John and Yoko met in 1966 so the idea of making a John side and a Paul side with Abbey Road was years after they had met. And in fact some A was for John, a typical side of songs and some of John’s best work and the other side was a blending of songs, primarily Paul’s.
