Riparian Ecosystems -Ecological Restoration in the Red Deer River Watershed
‘Riparian Ecosystems’ highlights the 2022 Riparian Planting Event hosted by the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance. In partnership with the Agroforestry & Woodlot Extension Society, roughly 2000 native seedlings were planted to improve riparian health on a section of private land. Riparian areas are important because they provide critical habitat for diverse plant and animal species, helping to support biodiversity and ecological balance. Additionally, they serve as natural filters, improving water quality by reducing sedimentation, filtering pollutants, and stabilizing stream banks, thus playing a crucial role in maintaining overall ecosystem health.
