Meet the VideoBrain computer system. An F8 powered 1977 system that tried to be a computing appliance before the public even knew what a home computer was.
APF
Looks familiar, don't it?
Wdym?
press 1 for intestinal distress they actually thought this could compete with Commodore?
The devs really said “let’s make this thing as obnoxious as possible”
“This is the APF TV Fun, that’s a great name isn’t it?”
wow🙃
LOL nice I printed out en Entire Bed for mine in ABS

scray
scary
These make weird noises
this is great, nice job
Thank you for the very instructional video! You sure can handle that sheet well.
What are the calculations used to design these gears? I can't figure out how to get the dimensions on the rack correct to mesh properly with a pinion like this.
Anybody else old enough to remember having to learn to type? Most people now just do it from the day they are born...
I learned to touch type at 13 years old. Before that, I was a "hunt-and-peck" typist!
That is... something else. haha. I see advertisements for this thing in early 1979 computer mags like Creative Computing -- but I can see why it didn't really go anywhere. Needed good games to survive.
OH wow... that's pretty lame. I was wondering about VideoBrain, but it doesn't look like I'm going to go out o my way to find one now. Thanks for sharing.
this looks like it could be a mediam rival to the atari2600
Nice video demo of an obscure system. That program looks to require a lot of patience, but I guess so does an etch-a-sketch!
What idiot thought it was a good idea to change the screen color every hit! o.o
Oh the VIdeoBrain -- this is a really obscure system.
Any measurable gear lash? I really like that self-centering helical cut. Fantastic bit of design work, that!
+Sean Connolly When the gears are mashed properly, none to speak of. Same as properly tightened belt. If the gears are too lose, yes backlash!. If they are too tight together, you get a tooth width pattern on the print, but still no backlash. :)
That Kapton surface messes with your camera so much the last half looks like a bad acid trip .....
Long John Actually, that effect is not seen on my camera, or the original video. Only on TH-cam! TH-cam is getting dizzy watching my printer make circles. ;)
Glankonian I'm currently building one of your Wallace G1 designs, I basically have the extruder and electronics left to finish, install and calibrate. I'm finding that another advantage to the rack and pinion drive is you can run the steppers at a lower current since you don't have all that belt tension working against you. That's a big plus on several levels (energy efficiency, less heat, longer component and motor life, etc.) .
Education, Finance, Fun. Things they hoped the Imagination Machine could provide for you. :)
"Education Finance Fun" Neither education nor finance have anything in relation to fun.
An excellent game
VideoBrain. One of the very few programmable systems to be discontinued in the 1970s - it was discontinued in spring 1979 after one year on the market. The RCA Studio II also bit the dust in 1979. I think the Coleco Telstar Arcade was discontinued in 1978. Both of those systems being far less advanced than the VideoBrain. Even the Channel F was made until 1981 or so. April 13, 2015 2:10 am
I like, but I would consider moving one stepper to the right hand side so X carriage is more balanced
That is in the plans for the next iteration. However, it's easier to wire this way. :)
That's a sweet looking machine! I'm impressed with how everything is laid out so cleanly. That extruder is fucking wicked though, man. I'm super impressed.
Can you play GTA on this?
Nice.
Do you have any more pictures of the printer as a whole? And I love the extruder/x carriage design, is it on Thingiverse?
In order, I find the R&P as accurate as a properly adjusted belt. I now have 2 units on R&P and haven't had to touch the Y yet. I originally just put together a regular 8mm Wallace. When I had found the Y beld had gone slack while I was assembeling the X stage, I decided to do something about it. Didn't like the Y belt set-up to start with. I have Ideas on how to power the X Carriage, and yes the motor on the carriage would add weight. Too busy Using Wallses to expiroment...
Hi, I really like this Idea. It saves buying belts and pulleys if you can make them. I have a few questions. Is the accuracy any better compared to the belt drive or is it the same? Does this require more or less maintenance? Why did you use a belt for the other drive and not a second rack & pinion? If the answer to the third question was to do with weight, would the rack and pinion not compensate for the extra weight by removing the flex of the belt? Thanks Great work. Mike
It's the Multi-Media computer of the late 70's
I had the VideoBrain with a bunch of cartridges back in about 1979, for a few years. A fun machine, at the time.
They are on thingiverse.
No, Not intentional. :( The extender I was using to get the smaller J-Head below the X-carriage seems to have too much play in it. I am replacing it with an alternate design. The head should not bob like that.
I was mesmerized by your rack and pinion then noticed your hotend pivoting during retraction. Is that intentional? What do you have going on there?
Brilliant - keep the Videobrain videos coming its a system very little is known about and until MESS emulates it better, this is as close as we can get.
The flippers are glitchy on the machine.
Is there a graphic glitch on the flippers or is it something that has happened in the recording?
Sony DCR-HC30 Digital handycam. It has a feature that if you hook up the AV out and the Ieee-1493(?)FireWire ports, it acts as a vid capture device. My voice was captured on a tape recorder and re-synked later. :(
Good to see what the Videobrain could do - looks an OK game actually which is surprising !
Picture looks super, what did you capture it with?
I'd hate to be the one working at the computer store back in the day and having to spend 8 hours listening to this infernal machine. :)
...........
I remember this cartridge was twice as tall as the regular APF cartridges...
@Sapwood2 Sorry, only i channel. CPU driven. Same as the COCO.
OMG I had one IM with ONE K of Memory lol
Thank you for posting this. I just picked up a few games for this console at a thrift store and I am seeking out as much information about the console as possible.
