A slow, creeping blindness settles in. Minute by minute. Thinking. A lot. Hour by hour. Carving. Sanding. Cursing. Day by day. Stop. Start over. Cursing again. The concept in your head. The concept you want to touch and hold. To shake the blindness? Return. Back to the mountains, forests and rivers. Let the concept settle into sunlight. Let the wind round what’s jagged and rough. What are you doing with this? I don’t understand what you’re doing?
😎Cooļ😎
Thay's the exact tuning of a normal Violin
Great work@❤
All wood or just ebony?
Thanks very much for a great tutorial. I find the story of your luthiery journey very inspiring. Take care, David. ps, I've subscribed.
Thank you so much!
❤❤❤❤❤❤ that mandolin
What finnish do you use? Also amazing build it looks amazing
Thanks. Just mixed shellac flakes with denatured alcohol and applied via French polish method.
@dubovainstruments oh okay that's awesome , I'll have to try it! Thanks so much
Sweet sounding uke!
Damn that mando looks incredible
That’s gorgeous
Bad ass
Absolute POS! Do not buy it. I got one for new shop. Didn't unbox for 2 months. Was factory defective. Jet sent me a new motor. Replaced it & still defective. Sent me a new motor backet. Still defective. Took it to auth service. Still defective. Been a year now. I've lugged it around, wrenched on it for a several hours. I'm out a grand and I haven't sanded a damn thing. BEWARE
Yeh. That’s crazy. This one is about 14 years old and haven’t had any issues with it. They are quite heavy and I can’t even imagine hauling it around. Best of luck with it
Beautiful
Very intetesting
I miss watching these.
Thanks. Just taking a bit of a break this summer before getting some projects rolling. Time will tell.
What are your mandolins pricing at
🕎🔯 GDAE he made all the notes of music 🎵 when he created the universe BARUCH HASHEM 🕎🔯 & yes he will do it again
So, a violin.
Lovely full sound

Hi Michael,its Izzy😊🎉🎉🎉
Hi Michael, Izzy😊
🎉. What about gdad looking for a used octane mandolin I have a mandolin that's tuned like yours but it's not an octave GDAE
What kind of lick is that?😊
I turned my brothers wrong, I just was looking for a lesson and happened to scroll on to this. My tuner had the G and D mixed up. Thank you so much!!!
Which is the best apps tuner for mandolin in Android
I love this ❤ connected with my name.
Can it be used for fire smoke?
No. Wrong type of filtration.
I think that this mandolin is really old and rare. Correct me if I am wrong
It’s actually a custom mandolin I built and had just strung up.
@@dubovainstruments oh ok it's really nice tho
How much btu it is
I’ve been keeping you in my thoughts and prayers brother. That’s a great looking mandola. I will be getting you to build me one. I know that Michael’s will be completely amazing! Great seeing you back on here.
Always appreciate your support and encouragement, Kenneth! I’ll keep you posted on how this mandola sounds. Getting close.
@@dubovainstruments I’m sure that it will sound amazing. I’m definitely going to have you build me one.
What type and percentage of alcohol are you adding to the flakes?
I start with 28 grams of shellac flakes to 240 ml of alcohol and let it sit for a few hours. Make sure to stir it occasionally to keep clumps of shellac from sitting in the bottom of the jar. If it seems too viscous I’ll add another 120 ml of alcohol. Hope that helps to get started.
@@dubovainstruments But what "type" and "percentage" of alcohol are you using? Rubbing alcohol? 70% rubbing alcohol, 90% rubbing alcohol? That's what I'm asking.
I use either denatured alcohol (found at all hardware stores) or everclear. Both work fine.
@@dubovainstruments ok, thanks. They don't have either of those in my state anymore.
I’m in Virginia. Had to go to the ABC store and get a special use permit for the Everclear. Easy form to fill out and state the intended use and they submit it for approval. Maybe try that option?
What finishing is on that mandolin?
Shellac applied via French Polish
@@dubovainstruments thanks
May i ask ,What size fret wire do you use on your mandolins?Thank you
I use the standard Stewart Macdonald fretwire.
ස්තූතියි 🌹❤🇱🇰👍
Nice! Thanks! 🎻🙂😎
I'd wager an acoustic without grain filler would be very bass heavy. The wood has less room to vibrate since the grain is compacted
Yeh. Interesting thought for sure. I think the same goes with having a thinner finish that doesn’t suffocate the vibrational tendencies of the wood too.
That one looks nicer than mine.
Keren
@@AnggiMandolin Keren?
Way helpful. Thanks for the great vid. ja
Glad it provided some help!
Thanks for sharing… do you have a video outlining the process of grain filling, sanding sealer, staining (with or w/o bursts) then tru oil finish? Does my steps sounds correct? Much appreciated!
Hey! Not sure I have a video with those steps. I tend to use shellac as a sealer before pore filling. Just easier to work with, less toxic, dries quicker. Be cognizant of color of grain filler and tear it on scrap first. Sometimes the advertised color of the grain filler can appear “off” once applied. Using drywall spackle and adding colors to it is one way to make your own grain filler. Def do a sealer coat beforehand though otherwise it’ll stain the base wood. Hope that helps some (?).
There is a video of someone mixing GoodFilla's powdered FILLA in a bag directly with TruOil and it worked very well and saved time and steps!
The guy who fitted the K&K pickup to my A Style, oval hole handed me an F hole A style he had just finished. It was voiced with more mid to cut through a bluegrass band, quite a shock at first but I loved it. Sadly, it cost about three months of what I could earn teaching but it was a work of art, like these!
Thanks for sharing that story! Each instrument a unique voice. Glad you got to experience a few different ones!
what numbered strings are on the instrument for tuning?

Im trying to fully understand the tone and string sound of this guitar, i play bass - bit i like it a lot !
Thanks! It was built to be a stand only in all aspects. Tonally and aesthetically
I am digging that lick, very bluesy. Can you tell me more about it, and I think the initial phrasing would sound wicked on bass !
I was just messing around with Am stuff. Just kinda started playing it so that’s all I really can explain. Sorry for the lame answer.
Groovy!
That is absolutely gorgeous!! Brings my love of Jazzmasters and archtops together and have thought about making it one day. Your other builds look fantastic as well. Cheers from Melbourne Australia.
Thanks a million! It was quite a brain game to pull it all together.
Okey lemme see if I got it right... the top 4 of a right-handed standard guitar tuning that has been left handed for the right hand. Got it!!
Mirror image.
@@dubovainstruments are there any other tunings? Guitar has several options: drop D, DADGAD, etc.
@@DisposableEgoyes, obviously, any stringed instrument has alternate tunings
It's classical strings tuning. Violin, violla, cello, etc.
Dope tune on a dope guitar.
Thanks. A nod to Doc Watson, of course.
I imagine you play instruments too, how often do you practice?
I don’t practice as much as I should secondary to juggling to many things. Usually a couple times a week I’ll play along with whatever song is blasting thru the speakers.
