That was some weird sh-t (VCV Rack, Experimental Generative Noise Collage)
This is a piece with no tonal scale, no harmony, no melody, no time signature, no rhythm. It's a pure noise collage. It started as an experiment to try out many of the Surge XT Effects modules that I had rarely or, in most cases, even never used before: Rotary Speaker, Neuron, Chow, Bonsai, Frequency Shifter, Ring Modulator, Vocoder, Resonator, Combulator, Exciter, TreeMonster, Tuned Delay, Spring Reverb, Nimbus, and WaveShaper.
These modules are applied to twelve voices with a lot of modulation to create or modify different and varying noises. The sound generating oscillators in the patch are Surge XT Twist VCO, Alias VCO and S&H Noise VCO, Sapphire PolyNucleus and Elastika, Sanguine Anuli and Funes, Venom Benjolin Oscillator, Befaco Noise Plethora, and DanT MOAR COWBELL! - all modules that provide a good foundation for such a collage of noises.
The voices are randomly faded in and out in an overall arc that starts with few voices, adds more and more until all twelve voices play together for a few minutes, before the number of active voices is reduced again step by step.

Debris of a Dark Cloud (VCV Rack, Generative Ambient)

This a dark ambient, quite slow and quiet piece. I'd recommend to listen with headphones or good audio equipment to catch the details in the muted soundscape. I was trying to balance the eight voices in a way that none sticks out as a lead, including the sequencer in the second half. Random modulation of some of the voices' volume brings different voices into the foreground every now and then. ...

This piece started as an experiment some time ago to mimic the sound of trombones - one of the most powerful orchestral instruments out there - in VCV Rack. Of course, it's still far away from a real trombone, but after I was more or less satisfied - or didn't find an easy way to improve the sound further - I extended the patch more and more. When there were quite a few voices I thought, what t...

      Yes, it's only noise, but that was the goal :) And if it's sonically attractive, at least in parts, and not completely annoying, I'm actually happy with the result.

      Thank you! Yes, the mixer mutes/fades are automated. The channels are turned on/off by a polyphonic signal that goes through a Bernoulli switch with a probablity that increases in the first around two thirds of the piece and then decreases again to the end.

    Another extraordinarily impeccable composition, this one evoking a vision of slow and dreamlike movement through Gas Clouds, Nebulae and effervescent Star Nurseries. So far, far, far from home, a home which anymore only exists as a dimming memory and ne'er to be seen again. The final journey of a once-intrepid Starman, arcing onwards on a trajectory neverending. Peaceful, yet visceral. Beautiful, but bittersweet. Into The Void....

    Like the very best novel or film, the "story" becomes paramount to success. The "sonic story" you have crafted is indeed succssful, complex and multilayered and slowly revealing the innermost secrets to an enraptured listener. The fact you have created this masterpiece using this synthesized medium is astonishing. Cheers, Mate!

      Thank you for your kind words! And interesting that you perceive a story in this piece. Even though it has a form of progression or arc (more for the purpose to add variation), I hadn't a story in mind at all. But after listening myself again, I hear what you mean. Perhaps, it indeed fails a bit as the laid-back dance music that I thought it would primarily be...😂

      @MinorRandomNoise Hallo MN! In my Mind's Eye, I can visualize a modern expressive dance, much like the choreography featured in Hania Rani's "Dancing With Ghosts". BTW, I tend to listen to music in a beefy 5.1 Dolby Surround set-up, and the movement and depth in this piece is a joy to behold! Total Ear Candy! Cheers! Or I suppose "Prost" is more in order!

      Hey, thank you for listening! I guess, it's holiday season and, perhaps, many take a break from YT. And this kind of very slow and a bit noisy music is probably not everybody's taste.

    • @rossimatic2134
      @rossimatic2134 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MinorRandomNoise Well, of all the ways to approach music making, this might be in the top 10 - contrary to YT traffic. I see a solution here to exactly what I'm after. This went from Steve Roach (desert solitaire) to Pete Namlook (music for urban meditation) and beyond. Perhaps you can make a tutorial one day, or explain your workflow ? Of course we all will end up with different results - I'm just curious how you came to this point.

    • @MinorRandomNoise
      @MinorRandomNoise หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rossimatic2134 Well, my workflow is usually quite chaotic. In most cases, I just start with a small idea and add voices later along the way that I didn't plan up front. For example, the starting point of this piece was the discovery of the Surge XT Tuned Delay. I found that the module could modify the sound in a way that I hadn't heard with any other module. (The module is not self-explanatory for me, I had to read the documentation but it was worth the effort.) The chaotic modulation of the Sapphire Lark LFO is another important component that I added from the start. And I wanted to have microtonal harmonies (19edo in this case) but I believe that they don't have a very large impact and could be replaced by conventional 12edo harmonies without changing the character of the piece very much.

    • @rossimatic2134
      @rossimatic2134 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MinorRandomNoise Thanks for the reply. Chaotic describes my workflow as well but success follows given enough perseverance and being open to happy accidents. But direction matters and what got my attention was some very musical sounds without being overly heavy handed with the sequencers. You've got a nice touch, sir ! I'll look into the tuned delay. I use vcv pro at this point only for midi processing, to add slew for example. For now I use arps and sequencers from vst's like UVI Falcon - but based on inspiration from stuff like yours will likely pivot one day to vcv.
