245: [Writing Practice Series] Breaking The Binge And Bust Cycle In Academic Writing [RE-RELEASE...
Welcome back to another segment of the podcast series about academic writing practices. In today’s episode, I tackle a major challenge many academics face in their writing: breaking the binge and bust cycle.
Many professors look forward to summer, winter, or semester breaks as an opportunity to catch up on all the publications they have put off during regular working hours. You think, “I’ll get so much done!” But then, the workload catches up with you, you burn out, and the break ends up being a time of exhaustion, not productivity. This cycle creates guilt and frustration and reinforces the negative thoughts you have about your writing and writing practice.
I offer alternative strategies that help you foster a more positive relationship with your writing. Learn the benefits of making writing the center of your career and how setting realistic, achievable goals will shift your mindset and ultimately boost productivity.
If you are gearing up for a summer or winter break and plan on using that time to get through your backed-up pipeline, this episode is for you. I share strategies to help you break the binge and bust cycle and develop a more sustainable, consistent writing practice.

239: [Writing Practice Series] What Makes A Writing Practice Sustainable? [RE-RELEASE EP 21]
มุมมอง 43หลายเดือนก่อน
I have worked with many academic women and nonbinary, and a recurring challenge about their writing is that no matter what habits or methods they try, their writing practice is never sustainable. The problem is that sustainable practices are a moving target. Writing habits you relied on during grad school no longer work as you juggle the demands of faculty life, including teaching, committee wo...

So…someone basically wins the lottery by obtaining a full time position, and they want to quit? Are you kidding me? Some of these jobs have over 800 people apply for one position. I would move to the Mississippi or Alaska if there was a job opening.
The time to quit is when administrators tell you to pass students of color, females and transgenders simply because of who they are, not because of their grade! This is called DEI and colleges are enforcing it across the country!
Thanks for saying absolutely nothing useful in the 20 mins you spoke. Next time, upgrade to ChatGPT4 instead of the free ChatGPT3 version
This is very helpful. Thank you!
When you actually need money.
I started to work in a school and all the stories I heard makes me want to quit now. I decided to be here for at least a year before quitting.
I finished my PhD and I have suffered so much abuse (even from previous MSc and PhD programs… in both Colombia and the USA… so isn’t a cultural thing related with a country but with the institution of university... and its not me because it had happened systematically to many phd and postdocs around me ) my list of papers is not espectacular (4-5) , I’m 45 years old and im still without a professor position… I might need a postdoctoral position… change my country (I’m on Colombia… I’m willing but I have to navigate it with my wife)… I love writing, doing experiments, analyzing data, teaching but its now almost impossible to get a position…. Any advice would help.
Great episode! Thanks!
TL;DW As soon as you finish your PhD and you find a job in industry (which will pay you 2-3x a postdoc salary in the 99% of the cases). You're welcome.
Hii
whatever ! I've ordered that book and want to read.
You need help! You cannot be pregnant for 4 years sweetheart, I don't Condone your Lies. It's time for you to embrace your family and let your family help you through this. Of course with Gods help
I'm loving your Trello tutorials.
True most academia do publishing for promotion👍
Hey, Please check your email.
There's aspects of Cal Newport's work that I really like. But his podcast especially always feels aimed at academic bros who never do service work.
#nailedit
You TOTALLY nailed my current situation.
Someone needs to write a book about feminine productivity ! The female bodies highlight these aspects of seasons and gestations etc and women have a unique social role that usually entails more energy drains! Want to hear a “yin” expression of producing
Yes!
That was helpful learning.
*promosm* ☺️
🌺 thank you Cathy
Yep. 30 years in academia unless I was willing to stay until 2.00 am to do the research, it would not be done. It is a toxic environment, and believe me when I say I am neither a snow-flake nor a push-over, and still the levels of stress sometimes were through the roof. Can't wait to get out in the very near future. I will miss the teaching, and I will continue doing research, but I will be very glad to drop the rest of the garbage.
OMG - I”m getting caught up on my podcasts & am just listening to this. Thanks for highlighting my story. It is such an honor. Also a wonderful reminder, especially at the beginning of the new year to just be in my alignment. Here’s to more preciousness in 2024.
Hi! Do you accept queer men in your navigate program??? It sounds amazing!
I decided to leave academia as a young academic. Several older academics quietly told me that they envied me, and if that they were younger, they would leave also. It was sad. I have no regrets about my decision, by the way.
This idea of 90% awesome was energizing as well as the 5 things. Every new professor needs to hear this! 🔥I’ve seen so much burnout in my academic career. Thanks
it's always time.
Academia is not for introverts like me, so i stopped it just after MS
This was a powerful topic. It really resonates with the vision I have for re-designing my own academic career. Thanks for this.
I finished my phd and I knew that was time to quit academia!!!
Which PhD you have?

I recommend a career in porn for you. I'm a physics professor, but I will act as director.
Amazing synchronisity
Do you read my thoughts??
this is quite a potent message, quite the opposite to what I've seen or heard.
Thank you!
This is so good. Thank you
The best video, very thoughtful
Thank you, Cathy. You are a gift. :)
The thing is that in academia the schedule is very chaotic and the work constantly interferes with your personal time, like weekends and vacation time. So people get fed-up after some time. And its more inflexible than other jobs because you can't just quit in the middle of the semester. So you feel stuck. You're basically working non-stop for minimum pay (think adjuncting 5-10 years until you actually get tenure) for a long time until you get to a somewhat comfortable financial space.
I just earned tenure in the spring, and I really needed to hear this!! Thank you!
Congrats on earning tenure!!
Thank you for posting this video.
this is the best description/explanation of why "writing every day" is not necessarily a sustainable writing practice that I have come across! thank you so much for sharing this! I'd tried this before, and it fails for exactly the reasons that you mentioned ~ that there isn't sustainability and, especially, * resilience * built into it. (I am also very guilty of the binge writing, long-time practicer of that!) I love what you emphasized instead about a sustainable writing practice where you build a relationship with your writing and with your writing practice. thank you again so much!
You’re welcome!! Glad it hits home! ❤️
Did I miss Tip 20?!
No, i screwed up the numbering! 🙃🙃🙃
Amazing! Thank you so much. I know this is an older video but I just found it trying to find out how to create a wring template with Trello. You have helped me more than you know. Great step by step!
Great! So glad I could help!
As a recent Master’s graduate, I am still determining what my ideal academic career looks like. These questions are simple, yet very thought provoking. Wielding my own power. Thank you, Cathy!

What you described is exactly what has happened to me. Almost ALL the opportunities that are coming my way are squarely "on mission" and I cannot possibly say yes to everything. I need new criteria! Thanks for this insight.
Such a good problem to have! Time to level up. 🎉
Love the look! Go for the gold!!
