Here is a selection of what was on display at the Weeting Steam Rally. Filmed on Saturday 15th July 2023 using just a handheld Samsung S20 FE. Apologies for the wind noise, it was a very showery, blustery day. I couldn't film everything, you really need a couple of days here to see all of what is on offer. One of my favourite rallies though, a really good all round family day out.

    I have seen that caterpillar all in bits about 15 to 20 years ago, when it was having some work done to the engine. Up North here by a local engineer. It was always a temperamental thing. If you look at the exhausts when it's running. Not much coming from No. 2 cylinder.

    I have a question about the Lister D, does it have a throttle or not?

    • @XtalQRP
      @XtalQRP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a governor that sets the speed depending on power output , usually 700 rpm for the standard 1.5 HP version. 1 HP engines are 500 rpm, 2 HP at 1000 RPM. There were other speeds available for special order but these are standard. There is an adjustable spring on the carburettor linkage that can apply more tension if you wish to increase the idle, or run it at a higher speed continuously.

    Cheers for posting this. If the coil measures a few ohms or less between the wires but open from either wire to the HT contact point is it any good? Just trying to get a Bamfords EG1 up and running again.

    What does the condenser do?

    • @richardengel2841
      @richardengel2841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The condenser helps to reduce the spark that is generated across the points when they open. If the condenser fails or is faulty then the points will wear out much quicker

    what did you use to get the rust off the flywheel ?

    • @heritagemachinery
      @heritagemachinery 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just used emery cloth and then wet & dry. It does gradually go rusty again, despite me rubbing oil on it. Ideally I should clean it up, polish it and apply clear lacquer which would stop it going rusty between runs.

    Thanks for this video, it's been helpful. One question how do you know if the coil is knackered? I'd guess it's a resistance measurement but what readings should I expect if that's what you do. Thanks

    • @heritagemachinery
      @heritagemachinery 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, many thanks for your view and your comment. I've been told that a reading of OVER 4k Ohms (4000) from the high voltage terminal of the coil to either wire coming out of the coil, indicates that it is faulty. I hope this helps :-)

    • @gillonstewart1601
      @gillonstewart1601 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heritagemachinery thanks for your reply. That's good to know. I have replaced the condenser and had the magneto sitting on a radiator for a few weeks. I will try measuring the resistance. I need to clean up the points and give it a test but my Ruston and Hornsby PT sat half buried in a field for approximately 60 years. I don't hold out too much hope for the mag working. It's been three years of work to unseize the engine and get it all stripped down and cleaned up. It's ready to rebuild now and even has original paint!
