Lifting at fifty - End of year PR attempts
My final attempts of 2024. This is where I find out if the way I am working is doing what it ought to do. I expected the video to be shorter but there weren't many clear parts for cutting.
I will try to work hard at making them shorter in the coming year.

Don't nt pullup without doing warmups 1st... same with any other boady part.. warming up otherwise your elbows will suffer do pulldowns supernated grips half of your bodyweight. Then hang from the bar a few times with under/overhand grip then stand on a box grip the bar fall from the bar and do one oull up....do this 3 times then ur elbows and lats will be ready and yiu can do full pullups

My advice try taking your grip out of it more by holding the bar overhand with your thumb under your fingers...it might be very uncomfortable at 1st but eventually it will feel comfortable if you tweek it...it also saves your CNS from burnout..also dont look up look forward about4 ft in front of you otherwise you may injure your neck

At least you have a fail safe set up ..to me you shouldn't be attempting that weight. I would go for a double instead that way you will be safer and still be able to measure your 1rep max ...not being horrible but i can see you arnt very well built...so be careful. Im 55 and being working out since i was 35 and because of that i have a bodybuilders body but if you have been working out consistently for decades i would be very surprised. I know i sound arrogant im not trying to be i am just be honest...so be very careful with the weights do doubles not singles. I admire anyone who works out as they get older but dont kill yourself trying

The blades are not sharp all the way down in part because when using a sword you parry with the closer unshaped area and attack with the sharp area. If you have not succeeded with the first 5 inches the next couple feet will not be much help and much harder to recover. I am glad you are enjoying them, but the prices you quote I am concerned about the quality of the steel.

@@TripleMHimself Yes that does make sense. I guess the best case scenario is actually making your punches faster with the same power behind them, vs the illusion of faster hands by stopping prematurely upon just grazing the target. from a judges perspective , I guess it makes sense as they;d be scoring more points. But actual damage done is next to nil.

I think the one thing that could fix that oversized sword easiest if you knew a machinist who could make a tungsten carbide pommel for you & I think the weight distribution moving further back to the Cross guard would help maneuver it better also you could probably sharpen up the middle and tip some more to shave off some more weight on the blade those two things would make it pretty well balanced is my hot take on it

It has been on the market for years, it's basically a "tactical" version of the "Sword of Boromir". It's sad that United Cutlery decided to make this monstrosity instead of something more akin to a real sword (for arming sword it should be at least 500g lighter) - the quality is good though and the have levelled up, look at the "Honshu Historic Forge" range, those are more correct.

Modern people don't take into account that if you are raised using something it's far eaiser to use. After one day alone using machetes clearing paths in forest mountain areas; I had gained more stamina an skill than I did over years of playing with blades. Not just stamina an accuracy an form. I learned after years I wasnt even swinging properly to "cut" thru things. Someone on here made a massive final fantasy 7 kit cloud kicker sword. An it chopped in half anything it dropped on. My argument is someone who's actually doing these things is far beyond someone who just does the moves. In mma/boxing you can train for hours a day for years ; an youll tire out in 20 seconds the first time you are actually being grappled. - - - also I might suggest avoiding trying to chop down trees 😂 makes for a good story but when that blade snaps an goes flying past your ear you remember the chopping vs slicing blade rules

Nothing controversial here at all. I'm assuming you are referring to Tony Jeffries video RE the punch in the solar plexus? I'm not convinced even he believes that is a good idea. You're spot on about the low kick too. I've been training kickboxing for 12 years and trained boxing for 6 years before that. The most effective tried and tested combo from both disciplines for the average ego-fuelled street confrontation. 1-2-3-Low Kick. The 3 can either be to the body or the head. They punches don't even need to all land or even be thrown at 100%. Some of them might land, but even if they don't a 100% low kick, shin connecting to quad has always (so far) been enough to remove all of their appetite for fighting. Even if they are still sort of coming forward, it never seems to be with the same conviction and they are willing to consider a way out if they can do it and save face.

Im 67 (almost) started training in Martial arts at 16 when I left school, I have grades in lau Gar, JuJitsu ive trained in Karate, kick boxed full contact as a semi pro and for the last 20 odd years Ive studied wing chun Gung Fu. Lately as Ive realised things are far more violent out there on the streets than they used to be, ive begun teaching myself Escrima . . . not the "patty cake club lets hit each others sticks and waste a lot of energy" type but the skimmed down, no nonsense, just do what works style. I have to say that when I started doing Wing chun I also started reading Geoff Thompsons books They taught me a lot about the "pre fight game" and i had a real ephiphany as far as training went. I can just about remember the last fight I had on the street as I practice the "art of fighting withouit fighting" these days and its serving me well. However having said all that, I was reading about a guy getting robbed at knifepoint at a bike park in the Midlands and I got to thinking "what would I do in that situation" Despite all my experience i would still run like hell when a knife is produced (as I have done in the past) but . . . . im not about to hand over 3K worth of mountain bike to some little tosser with a knife . .so i looked around and decided to train with a weapon Yup ive added a "force multiplier" to my existing background. Escrima is a real Martial art i found a good channel on you tube and decided to learn this stuff purely by watching his free content. Skip forward 2 months or so. Ive trained everyday ( 15 minutes here and there) fashioned my own sticks, built a tyre dummy and learnt the basics utilising just 8 strikes. Ive watched the "dog brothers on you tube and I was happy to see that despite all the experience they have, these basic strikes are all you need to rely on in a real scrap. Conclusions; i was never lacking in the confidence dept, but its now gone through the roof! The weapon just instills so much as you continue to use it and its absolutely a deterrent to anyone wanting to fuck with me . . . I just show it, tell em there is no such thing as a "fair fight" and if they continue to press the matter i will have no qualms about smashing bones (fingers, kneecaps, shins, wrist etc . .) and i get to be the one to go home . . . the choice is theirs For more info and to see my progress to date here is my channel www.youtube.com/@michaelreynolds6543

The only thing that disappointed me about looking at your videos, is that I look a lot older than you, even though I am a bit younger. ;) Cheers.

Only reference to your deadlift is the short clip in the beginning of the video so I assume that's how you normally do them. Myself I have never liked the "touch and go" style, I always do my sets like a series of singles, resetting before every rep. Works/feels a lot better for me.... Maybe you should add some sumo deadlifts, works the deadlift muscles but in a slightly different way, might be beneficial? I'm halfway thru a 6 month strength block aiming to test my max in bench and dead (not squat because my knees sux) end of January, probably for the last time since I turn 66. Aiming for 120 kg in bench and 225 kg in deadlift at 90 Kg bodyweight So far so good, last week I did 5 reps on 95 (1sec pause on chest) and 6 reps on 165. Have you tried Zercher squats? Hits the muscles very similar to deadlift, love those! Who knows, you might be able to do those when you can't deadlift? Good luck!
