The War of 1812 started when Napoleon suckered the Madison into opening a "second front" to divide the British forces that he was fighting in Europe, promising to lift the trade restrictions which he had previously imposed and also to release American prisoners if the United States declared war. The 'War Hawks' in Congress who voted in favor of war were not from those areas affected by impressment, from the States of the south and west, who had the objective of annexing the Canadian provinces in order to a) remove British influence from the continent and, more importantly, b) recapture the thousands of slaves who had been escaping to freedom in Canada every year. As it turned out, Napoleon never lifted the trade restrictions, and the American sailors imprisoned in France were only released after the British and their European allies had defeated Napoleon in 1814

Now that I've finished, the content really only told the American side, or more to the point the modern American side. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that this is basically a recap of what is taught in American schools. The complete lack of any mention or the Manifest Destiny and the American imperial ambition it represented is massive. "54, 40 or fight!" might be another one to look into. The fact that both sides' governments claimed the war as a victory is also worth mention. That's all I have for now.
