I’m a total surf nerd stoked on reviewing surfboards, surf gear and swimwear. Hoping to inspire female surfers to understand their gear better so they can be confident in themselves & their equipment.
Firewire Mashup Fin testing in back to back sessions & which setup goes best in the Mashup
This was a fun fin experiment in the Firewire Mashup, ultimately to see how each fin setup would affect the board. Both shapers Dan Mann and Rob Machado both have their own idea of what fin set up they prefer in the Mashup so I thought lets try them all and see how they go. Dan Mann prefers a quad set while Rob Machado prefers a Twin + Trailer setup.
I used the the same fin profiles where I could to keep the experiment as controlled as possible. I rode the Mashup continuously for a few months without putting any other boards under my feet. This gave me the full experience without any other variable hindering the process and what I was feeling in the water.
During this Mashup mixed series I surfed a mixture of beach breaks and point breaks ranging 1/2 a ft to overhead.
I'm 166cm/5.5ft and 63kg/138lbs and these are my ideal Setups:
Waves .5ft - 2ft - Twin Set (Winner for me as these are the conditions I would most often be choosing to ride the Mashup in)
Waves 2ft + Twin + Trailer
Waves 2.5ft - Overhead Quad
I would use the thruster on any day I want to focus on a more controlled feeling, reduce speed and have a focus on pivoting off the tail type turns.

Thinking about the Mayhem Evil Twin fins for this, for bigger days. Any thoughts?
@@surfingcavachon The Mayhem Evil twin set is now available in a medium and a Large. Firstly I would say the Large would be the pick of the two if any and when comparing the evil twins to the Tomo Keel fins…the Evil twins have .19” less height than the Tomo’s. Overall the Evil Twins have 21.25” area compared to Tomo’s have 23.41” area. I would say if you can handle less fin with a super responsive board when it’s going fast then it’s worth a try. I’m going to guess the Tomo would have a tad more bite and hold. My Pick, Tomo for the steeper waves & maybe try Evil twins for a flatter wave face? If it was me, bigger days with a solid fast take off I would pick the Tomo’s so I can rely on them for grab and bite and assure no slide out in such a critical take off. Bigger roll in waves It would be a better time to try the Evin Twins. Hope this helps? I’m no expert but always learning 😊

Excellent breakdown of the board. As a shortboarder for 30+years I surprisingly found this board to be the best board I’ve had in years. From small junk to good overhead days, this thing has been unreal. I’m in SoCal and this is effectively a 1 board quiver for about 95% of days.

@SurfsUpKate 👍🏻. No worries. Have you got an insta page to cross promote your videos ? Hmm, I have 18 boards so I don't really want to know about a new board because I'll probably buy it 🤣. Actually I have a squash tail pyzel bastard (renamed "radius") brett barley tested a bunch of boards this year and the radius was his favourite by far. It was a round tail. (Think the board review was on the real watersports channel" ). I know tyler wright surfs it. I'm considering a round tail rather than the squash. And even though it is high performance its actually really versatile from my experience. Maybe try out the machadocado ? 😃. Cheers 🙏🏻

Keep in mind when you jump on the round tail it’s not going to produce as much speed in the smaller waves compared to the squash. In good waves, it will be great having the round tail version 👌🏽 Actually yes I have ridden the Machadocado so I will plan that review very soon! Stay tuned.
