Honestly I will say "some" of the Hasbro Transformers are complicated like example Legacy Tigerhawk and Sandstorm. That being said, if you want complicated, you clearly haven't seen any of the Third parties Transformers out there!

The answer is "It varies", The soundwave example isn't that bad in term of complexity, although I will admit the alt mode is pretty weak. Overall, I don't think that the mainline figures have been that bad; they're just complex enough to get the job done. The worst offenders, in my mind, have been the Masterpiece line, as well as most of the Beyverse figures, especially the Studio Series renditions. Granted, Beyverse have inherently complex designs that Hasbro had to stay true to, and the point of MP was to get as accurate to the animation models as possible. When it's so complex that even after multiple transformations you still need the instructions in front of you, it's too complex. When there are multiple instances of pins being held by thin layers of plastic that will snap with the slightest excess of pressure, it's too complex. When you take it out of the box and immediately say to yourself "OK, wow, this looks cool as-is, I am never going to transform it", it is probably too complex. And now in my head, I hear Mel Brooks as President Scroob: "This transformation's too complex! By the time it finishes, the movie will be over!"

Great comparison video. I definitely agree that they should not have to over-engineer figures like Soundwave. Just take the original and work in modern points of articulation and you're good to go. The toy and cartoon models were similar enough that you don't need to change much other than the color deco very slightly. That being said, for a re-tool of the Siege mold, this version of Soundwave is pretty great. I'm almost positive that we'll see an SS86 Soundwave in the next few years, which hopefully will be the definitive G1 version of the figure.

I had a Soundwave on a shelf in high-school. I didn't have any cassettes so I put a real micro cassette in his chest for display.

Are you familiar with the MP3 player version of Soundwave? IIRC, it was part of what was called the Music Label line, and a Japanese exclusive. It turned into a _working_ MP3 player. To partially preserve the chest gimmick, and again if memory serves (had to sell mine off 15 years ago), you could insert a MiniSD Card into his chest. No, _not_ MicroSD. Had to get the MiniSD and an adapter for it. XD Rumble and Frenzy were available as headphones. I don't recall of they were related, and might have mixed up their identities with different characters, but I _think_ there was a thumb drive that became Ravage and a computer mouse that transformed into Laserbeak. Not _directly_ compatible with Soundwave, but all in all a nice way to handle things.

Remember Convertors? Another competing knock off transformer toyline I remember. I had what is like a rip off of the skull squadron leader veritech fighter from Macross/Robotech.

Soundwave has always been my favorite, and the 2020 release caught my eye in stores. Ended up being the catalyst which got me back into buying Transformers again. I'm glad they're re-releasing him for those who missed out, because he became quite pricey on the aftermarket.

I watched the History Channel episode "The Toys that built America " Paraphrased the robot wars. A deep dive into Tonka toy company in Minnesota and Hasbro toy company out California that started the Transformers/Gobots war. I love it how the episode highlights how transformers knockoffs were actually the catalysts to cement Hasbro/Takara's dominance in the industry. How many knockoffs were actually bought out and incorporated into the Transformers lore. And how Gobots are now Transformers

The only regret that I have was never having enough transformers points to acquire the whole OmniBots team and only sending away for rhe Powerdasher jet figure. I think i remember a car version of Powerdasher. My all-time favorite send away transformers knockoff was the Gobots transforming cap pistol robot. 80s are The Gen x generation

That Optimus is a reprint G1, the Original G1s were all metal, then after complaints of kids getting hurt, and the rising cost of metal prices everything then went to plastic and got reprinted.

If you like this one you should check out the MP version, there are a lot of KOs out there and they’re very reasonably priced.

I'll never forget my mom buying this for me in 1985 when I was just 13, dad would hear me at night in the dark trying to transform it and tell me to go to sleep. I miss those days so much.

When we moved when I was 15, my G1 collection got stolen by the Vietnamese kids living down the street. Allowance, yard work money, etc. Saved up to buy them. Everything gone. No prime, no Megatron, Soundwave or Shockwave. No autobots like Wheeljack and Sideswipe and Sunstreaker. Gone We spent the weekend moving. Had a few things left to move from old house to the new house a few blocks away. When we came back on Monday, d house broken into. Missing a few boxes. Transformers box also missing. Gotta love Stockton,CA. We know it was them when the little shits were bragging about their haul. Small neighborhood. Mutual friends heard. Business was handled.

i still have every transformer I got as a kid, including Wheeljack, who was my absolute favorite. Wheeljack was the first Transformer I got, I think back in '84? He was like MacGyver and I absolutely adored him. He's seen better days though. Someday I have to see about reacquiring his accessories, as I lost them before I developed a storage solution for all my Transformer accessories. Wheeljack is still my favorite, I have so many versions of him now XD

I was so certain the blue car guy was one of the Go-Bots Puzzler guys till you showed the Zybot. Man there was just so many Transforming robots back then. Good times.

I've still got some of my Transformers and a Gobot from the 80s. Those Zybots figures look familiar to me. I can understand the need to collect all of them, the packaging whispers to you to buy them all. I also remember back at a World of Wheels in the 80s where a guy was dressed up like one of the Gobots, I got a picture taken, at the time thinking Gobots were Transformers.
