Firewood Kiln & Wet Boiler Wood
มุมมอง 91728 วันที่ผ่านมา
Kiln is running none stop. The c800 boiler will burn anything but burning dry wood is so much better. Burn times are around 5 min and keeps water temps where they need to be. Wet wood will burn but more smoke and way longer cycle times. So I will continue to dry my boiler wood.

Matt I have two young boys and they are a handful at times. as they get older there asking a lot of questions. You can tell there trying to soak in everything that I do. I really enjoy being a part of there learning process. Glad you and your entire family is doing well. Did you switch out that inner chain guard on 500i?? Be safe and stay hydrated.
Yeah watching kids grow and learn is a beautiful thing. I did put the new sprocket on the saw. She’s been running like a champ. Gets put to work daily right now.
Take a peek at metal objects that have set on concrete for years. You will see rust a few inches up from the concrete. For example: hand rails on steps to a house or metal objects such as an old welding machine that sat on the floor long term. A corrosion reaction is set up when steel contacts concrete.
Yes that is true when metal sits on concrete.
Nice brother, I hope you enjoyed your holidays. Maybe a greenhouse to store your wood in that clearing may help keep them dry and perhaps reduce the time in the kiln with some solar heat.
Yeah I’ve thought about that. Ideally I’d like to be way ahead on drying wood. Goal is after this winter sales, so during the winter process as much wood as I can so I’m way ahead for next burn season. But a huge solar kiln would be nice.
I’d find it hard not to throw my trash & trash bags in the furnace lol
Oh some people do.
So understand everyone gets busy. Sometimes I don’t do a good job of keeping up on watching videos just get busy with work and our homestead
Yeah it never ends
Thanks for the update Matt.
Happy Fathers Day. Your 5th wheel caught my attention. I have a Cougar 36' with 3 slides, that bad boy looks like the 42 with 4 or 5 slides? Very nice!
It’s a cooper canyon 38.5ft. 3 slides outdoor kitchen. It’s perfect and they are definitely nice.
Great to see and hear from you! Glad to see that you and your family are doing well! Don't worry about not putting out videos regularly. As others have said, your wellbeing, family and work are more important! They must always take priority! Happy father's day!
Thank you. I’m all about family as that matters most. I’d rather spend my time with my boys and teach them everything I know.
What mc do you shoot for in the interior of your wood when it is fully dry?
Interior of the wood usually after 5 days is around 15%. Outside is 0 always. So technically it is around 7ish after the wood equalizes after a few weeks. If I let it go one more days it is practically all zero percent. Cleanest burning wood I’ve ever burnt.
Happy father's day 😊 Matt
Thank you.
Good to see you again. Fit the videos in when you can, family time and safety is more important than entertaining others. Happy Father's Day 😊
Thank you. I’m going to try and do more. I do enjoy it. Time just flys.
It is always nice to hear from you again, but family, health and work are more important than videos
Those are the most important things in life. Family matters most. But I do enjoy making videos and talking with you guys.
Hi, followed your kiln videos for a while and was wondering if you had any insight as to how much longer it would take to dry wood if you had to shut your kiln off at the end of work day? Say 8-12 max at a time before having to shut it off and leave. I know it would take a lot longer to dry but do you have any idea how much longer? I built a small firewood kiln that holds a bit less then a cord but since it is not automated I can only run it when I'm around and don't live at that place it is at. Thanks for any help, really like your videos.
The key to drying wood in a kiln is keeping the inside of the wood at the highest temp possible and airflow to remove the water/moisture. I think it would take a whole lot longer to extract the inside moisture if you even could. The outside of the wood will dry. What is your heat source?
Which thermostat do you use for your kiln?
Ive been using the Elitech. Not sure which model exactly. But so far both of mine are working as they should.
Does your kiln take longer to dry wood when it is rainy and humid outside?
@ryangoff8853 honestly I don’t notice a difference. That’s probably because I don’t vent all the time. Venting is key but I don’t like to do that until I know the core of the wood is up to my desired temp then I will vent to get the outside moisture out and then continue the cycle.
How long will it take to pay off what you spent on equipment
Honestly with how much electricity we use in the shop to run everything we have not very long at all. I’d say a few months and we will be ahead. I will be hooking up some more solar panels here shortly and once those are up and running I will be able to run the whole shop off grid for a few days a week for now which will save us money. Could be 100% off right now if I wasn’t running the kiln everyday.
Great video Matt. Buds I’ve been catching up on your last couple videos. You sure do have the irons in the fire. Solar energy super interesting. Those smart batteries are incredible. I didn’t know they existed. Have a great weekend sir.
Yeah I didn’t know they existed either. Super smart idea. And yeah. I have so many things going on all at once. It’s crazy. Hope you also have a great weekend.
My camper has 2 - 240 watt solar panels with 2 marine lead acid batteries and a 2000 Watt inverter. I did a test and ran a 50 Watt mini dehumidifier and the system could not keep it going for 24 hours??? Once the voltage on the batteries gets below 12 volts. It shuts down. LI batteries will maintain the voltage until it reaches 20% capacity. Hence the huge market for for using LI batteries. If you connect 2 or more LI batteries in a series you have to let them sit for something like 24 hours so they can balance and then you can start charging them. You may want to have identical batteries if you connect them in a series? You have my full attention on your set up. GREAT VIDEO.
Yeah there’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to new technology. I have a lot to learn when it come to LI BATTERIES. but from what I have found they are definitely worth the money. I’ve been super happy with the GoldenMate products and they definitely work as advertised. I know for a fact two 12v Li batteries would get it way more than 24hrs of run time.
One thing that was really important to me in looking at the UPS Goldenmate make is over voltage and over current protection from normal day to day fluctuations, also they mention pure sign wave indicating this device likely isolates the intake current from output current with a transformer, this is good for computers and audio equipment,,, etc reducing line noise from noisy equipment like microwaves or large electric motors. Nice piece of equipment.
Yep. I’m pretty happy with it so far. It’s nice and compact and works as it should. But having all that protection is a piece of mind knowing whatever is plugged in to it is protected.
Great video Matt, and also complicated.
Yeah it can be. I’m still learning it all. Wish I had more time to learn more and grow it bigger. Just so busy with everything else I have going on. Scheduling is the hardest part.
Love how #Goldenmate has the screen on top of it. So helpful and useful, no guess work
Yeah it’s really a smart design and very useful. So far I’m loving it.
Big old girl there!
Oh she definitely was
Don't put to much expectations on the MSA300, I have one over 2 years with an 18" bar, sure the saw is great and is fast I never have a problem with saw, the huge problem are the batteries, the AP500S Battery technology is light years away for this saw, for a day work you need a truck load of batteries. I also have the MSA220C and the 161T. Attending at his class the 161T is the winner, for sure I have used and abused this little saw way beyond manufacturers recommendation in over 3 years this little saw never fail.
I do like the 300. But I love my new battery top handle for Stihl. Used it on one 300s battery all day. Ran like a champ.
@@Treestofirewood I also have the FSA135 Trimmer, GTA26 and the blower BGA86 all the machines are good I never have any problem in over 3 years just the battery technology still light years away for professional use. I not know what charger you use but I strong recommend the 500.
@sirvozelo1 I believe I have the 500. It’s way better than the standard chargers for the smaller batteries.
@@Treestofirewood I have 2 five hundreds and one 101 the small black one but this is no good takes over 3 hours to charge one battery.
The saw is good I have one over 2 years and have no complaints at all, the AP500S battery isn't up to the saw for professional use, is like a Mustang GT with gas tank in the reserve.
Yeah I hear that. It’s good for much smaller wood. And then it shines pretty well.
@@Treestofirewood Even in a some ticker wood the saw is good have power and is fast the all problem is that the batteries aren't up to the saw.
Love it 🎉
Good to hear from ya brother. Glad she’s burning good 👍🏻
Thanks man. Been so so busy. Barely have time to eat and sleep. But business is good. And yeah she’s a burning. But works best right now with dry dry wood because she stays dormant for so long. Man I can’t wait till winter so see this beast work. I see your pumping out the tree jobs. Keep it up.
I would try and tighten up boiler to 2 degrees from going out during warmer weather..
Yeah I may start making it even tighter than what I have it now. Sometimes I forget I can do that.
Connecticut rain!!
Rain rain rain. That’s all we are getting and that’s all that’s in the forecast as well.
What do you actually do when you “relight” the boiler ? Is the wood in it all burned, and also not a decent coal bed left either ? Thnx…🤙🏻
The only reason I have to re light it is because it just sits for to long. And all I have to do is hit the coals with the torch for a few seconds and then I shut the door. When I was throwing dry wood in there it wasn’t a problem at all. Would operate as normal.
Buddy got a good set up kiln dry OAK FARM FIREWOOD 🪵. 😊
Great people think alike.
I am in Alberta, north of Idaho and the weather has been awesome, some rain but warm and nice. Can't complain. Good you can use the damp wood now, perhaps half dry half wet wood.
Yeah when I was drying some boiler wood I was mixing it and it was working great. Only wood I have ready now is the wood I dry. I think it will be a lot better when it gets cold out again.
Glad to see you back. Figured you've been busy from all the storms on top of it being a busy time of year for you. It appears that you're getting closer to getting the new boiler dialed in 👍
Do you run the sawdust through the kiln?
I do not. We bag it right away and then sell it.
FIRST ONE PIN ME PLS
Nice felling job 👍 One of the most beautiful logs that I helped saw was a hard maple that had, at some point, been struck by lightning and survived and healed leaving a unique grain pattern.
I bet that was a pretty cool looking log. Hard maple has some really nice wood
Professional
Yes in deed.
Nice job that was a massive tree
Yes it was a very big tree. Sad to see it go. But Mother Nature called.
Put fire brick over your grates with a 1"gap in between the bricks. Less air flow more coals in your bed only need the grates for coal
That’s a great idea. I may just do that.
What happens if you want to go on a one week vacation in the middle of winter? Does the fire go out and the water pipes freeze for the rest of the winter?
The fire will eventually go out. But the pumps stay on to circulate the water at all times so not worried about the water freezing. Also the house back up systems will turn on on there own which will keep the water warm until someone gets back to the house to re lot the fire.
That “garbage” wood in the tote as many people will say is the BEST for conventional boilers. I love loading mine with all the loose junk and small pieces. Usually leaves a great bed for the big wood to sit on
Yeah man. It’s the perfect way to get rid of all the uglies. And with the smaller pieces the recovery time is insane. Bigger pieces do what there suppose to do. Burn slower and longer. But best part is. Doesn’t matter what it is. Just throw it in. Glad I listened to your advice.
Wow a month already! Time flies lol 🎉
Oh yeah. Being busy all the time days just fly by.
i wanna see the kiln guys in gonna have to look through your videos
Just wait till I build a much larger higher capacity kiln later this fall.
burn 200 tons of wood, instead of several miners heating your house and giving you money for spending energy...
wat?
That’s awesome, but don’t hurry summer lol. Take care
Yeah I know. But fall will be here before ya know it. Our summers where I am are not very long. But that’s fine. I prefer the colder weather anyways.
@@Treestofirewood same here, I can’t stand the hot and humid weather
Great update Matt.
I'm glad to hear it is exceeding you expectations so far 😊 Full on burn season this fall should be interesting. Thank you for the update 👍
Can’t wait to see how she does in winter
I’m definitely excited about it. For my current load and the load that’s coming eventually I still don’t think it will be a problem for her at all.
Thing eats good!
Yeah it’s pretty impressive for a battery saw.
The sprocket is a wear part that will need replacing eventually.. always good to have one in the tool box ..
Crazy story. I ran the chain on that sprocket for 3 years. Video coming up on that.
@Treestofirewood it's good till it's not.. hope I can find my new sprocket when I need it.. been 2 years or so now
@buckinfirewood that sounds about right.
What's your opinion on the 500i with 28" bar and a skip tooth chain??
28 and skip tooth shreds. Cuts a little slower but will hold high rpms all day. I think I’m going to go with maybe a 32 on my 500i or 28 from now on and run 25 on my 461. May switch to light bars as well. Only reason I don’t run light bars is because I’m hard on my saws. But with the weigh savings it does add up.
I do like the one handed start for electric. I’ve gotten in a pickle before trying to hang on with my left hand then try to start the saw. I’m prob gonna buy the STIHL or husky batter top handle. I’m deff sold after using my tree guys one.
I let my climber use my battery top handle today. And he’s a husky guy. He said yep definitely going to look at husky battery top handle. So nice to be able to just hit a button and rip. Light and powerful. Absolutely love mine.
I am with Stihl and I never have problems with 3 models battery saws I have, but I with say before you buy consider make a comparison on the batteries how much they cost and how long they last on a charge. I may wrong but I have see some videos and apparently the hasky batteries last longer on a charge.
