Woodyard Maintenance
Today we did a full clean up around the firewood processor. Moved some boiler logs and cleaned up underneath that as well. Brought up the rest of the logs I have down below to make room for the upcoming deliveries. Also loaded the boiler and checked on the firewood kiln.

Here we are back in the cold cutting some big rounds into boiler wood. Today we used the Stihl 881 chainsaw with a 3ft bar. I also used a new tape measure to measure the logs. Here is what I used. Inkerma Tape Measure. 16ft with laser Measure. amzn.to/4jaqw6M DY7Q728X. 10% discount code
Operation Boiler Wood
มุมมอง 3K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
We are out of boiler wood. Well at least wood that is dry or seasoned a little. So I do have a good amount of locust wood that I brought back from a tree job that are left in log form of large rounds. So today I’m getting busy cutting up and putting wood into totes to be used for boiler wood. And not to mention on a pretty cold day.
Processing Firewood In Freezing Temps
มุมมอง 1.3K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Processing some firewood in single digit temps. Not the funniest thing to do but it needs to be done. Lots of wood to make to get ready for next year. Chain came off. Was an easy fix. Just part of the job.
Firewood Quality Control

Kiln and boiler talk. Also doing two processes loads of resplits. Less than 1 facecord worth. Not bad. Touching the wood one time is worth the quality being perfect.
Packing The Kiln Full

Putting 5 production firewood totes into the kiln along with 1 oak tote for burning inside the house and a boiler totes. I will be adjusting the drying parameters to try and optimize the drying times even more. Trying to keep the production up while drying wood for the boiler and the house. We will see how it goes.

Loving this boiler process and the set up.... This has become fascinating to me! Thanks for sharing!
No problem
How often do you sharpen that chain cutter?
Of the wood is clean and not muddy roughly every 20 cords.
Why not blow off the snow with a leaf blower or something?
Yeah I suppose I could have. I usually do to be honest. Or at least get as much snow off of the wood as I can.
Great video
Hello Matt Too bad you came home to a sick household !! And now it's your turn ! Hopefully everyone will be healthy soon ! Glad you had fun sledding ! Looks like you are accident free on that adventure ! At least you look physically ok ! LOL Sleds are fun BUT boy do they demand Respect !!!! I had a almost new JDX-8 in 1975 Boy was it fast for it day ! Mere seconds to reach 60 MPH Good on all the plans with the wood ! Wow on how much there is to always do in running a business !😊 Take Care ! Hope your feeling a bit better tomorrow !!
Oh the good ole jds. Yeah riding sleds sure does beat up the body. But boy is it addicting. I love it. And no kidding there’s always so much to do. But honestly I do what I can when I can. But I need to start back at processing some serious wood now that I’m back. But being sick nothing I can do about that. Hoping in the next few days.
Hello Matt, Glad you got back safely! Hope you and the family get better soon. You got to fire up the processor man. Take care!👍🇺🇸
Trust me. This beautiful weather we have had and I’m stuck in the house. Not good. I hope in a few days to be back on my feet.
Welcome back that usually happens. The kids get sick. The wife gets sick and we get sick.
Exactly what did happen too.
What size PV wire did you use for that long distance?
I believe it was 10 gauge.
Welcome back Matt.
I hope you all feel better soon.
Get well,keep cutting
Glad you had a good trip 😊 I hope you and your family get feeling better soon. Thank you for the update.
Yeah trip was fun. But yeah we are all super sick right now.
Welcome back!👍
Lookin good, an idea for scrap at the end of the splitting chamber/ start of the conveyor use the bottom of a tote bladder just 6” or so tall basically a pan screw a rope on each side when it’s full pull it out, empty slide back into place. Not so sure about the sawdust buildip near the saw wish that was a little better engineered but any sort of dust collection without vaccum pressure is real tough.
I get that same scrap under the start of the conveyor of my Axis. It starts building up,…but not anything like Matt’s having to deal with. Glad you mentioned the “pan.” I get a lot of slash on the ground that builds up off the table. I clean it up when it starts to become a hazard. I’m thinking I may just place one of those bladder tops down so that I can rake into it from off of the table.
I found the side arm on my 50 gallon tank lacked capacity. When the gas is running it has the ability to do a lot a warming while your using it but the side arm runs out of hot water fast. I just installed a 30 plate heat exchanger onto the tabk inlet so it heats the cold 40° water all the way up to 130+ as it enters the tank. Now its endless hot water. I still use the side arm as well in series to the plate heat exchanger. First the plate heat exchanger then the side arm then the second floor furnace. Its very nice having unlimited hot water. Cost about another $400 for fittings and heat exchanger but totally worth it
Are you sure you have the side arm hooked up correctly? The boiler water circulates on the outer of the side arm which pulls the cold water from the bottom of the hot water tank and circulates the water inside so you constantly always have hot water in the tank. We take back to back showers and give the kids a huge bath every night with zero heat loss.
@Treestofirewood ya definitely hooked up right. No thermal traps or anything. The tank is hot. It's 170° but it runs out so fast. Like 10 minutes of a hot shower and u can feel it fading quick. It's connected to my drain and overflow just like yours. Reverse flow boiler water. Hot in the top out at the bottom. It can't keep up. We are on city water and its been coming in at like 40-42° deludes the tank so fast. Now with the plate heat exchanger it's great. Also have the tank booster valve aka temperature regulator valve to keep it from exceeding 120. There's a vid on my channel of a partial set up before I added the upstairs to that circuit. But the air to water heat exchanger is after the domestic. Couldn't keep up before or after I added that.
@electromechanicalstuff2602 do you have a mixing valve coming off the hot on the tank and set to 120 or so? If not that could be why you are losing so much temp so fast.
@@Treestofirewood ya . Can u see my last response?
Good idea on the subpanel off the Ecoflow SHP2. There is a bus bar limit on current in the Ecoflow panel. Are you aware of that and are you close to the limit? Saw the 262 area code on the phone number in the panel (and recognized your accent)...you are very close to me. WE is upping rates on us AGAIN. Ebay has Ecoflow's refurbished store. They offer 15%-20% off coupons all the time. I see their batteries and inverters up there all the time.
I am aware of the limits of the panel and so far we have not surpassed it. The ultras are just powerhouses. I’m very happy with them so far. They have done everything I need them to do. This year I will add two more to max out the system and hopefully be 100% off grid all the time. It’s all about maxing out solar coming in and battery storage. So with another two ultras I will need a whole lot of battery’s. But good thing with this system we can add them as we go which is nice. I will have to look at the refurbished store and see what they currently have to offer.
How do the bags hold up to the heat of the kiln?
I think they get a little dry rot in the kiln. Plus the wood in the bags don’t dry the best. The air flow doesn’t go thru the bags like when there just in the totes. That was my experience with the bags in general.
Looks like fun!
I own a Stihl 220C with a 16 inch bar. I only own the 300S batteries (four of them). We live on 10+ acres in the Sierra Foothills. We have at least seven different species of Oak here along with Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Cedar , Buckeye and Grey Pine. We also have plenty of Manzanita on our property. I also own a Stihl Farm Boss 22" Gas Saw and a Stihl Gas 4 cycle Pole Saw. All that said the 220C is my daily go to saw. With a sharp chain and letting the saw do its job while not forcing into the log it works very well. I have the ability to charge batteries while in the field with a system I built onto my Kawasaki Mule 4010 equipped with a 500 watt solar panel and LifeP04 batteries. I never have to use grid power to charge my batteries and always have a fresh battery waiting. I own a Stihl KMA 135 36 volt Powerhead Kombi System and many attachments. So clearly I am committed to the battery platform. The big pros for me are no pull rope starting, no gas or worry about infrequent use and bad gas, no 2 cycle oil, no warm up, no air filters, spark plugs, etc. I am interested in the MSA 300 but not at the additional cost of buying the 500S batteries. I will keep my seldom used Farm Boss vs buying into the 300 and bigger batteries, that would be an easy $1500 for occasional use around here.
Sounds like you have a nice set up. Why change up what works. And yeah to get the 300 and a few batteries that would be expensive. You can run that saw on the 300 batteries but the saw will stay in eco mode.
Incredible piece of machinery
I am always amazed when I see these clips of guys riding big mountain sleds in an area the size of a backyard. I’m sure glad I live in Alaska😂
Yes that is true. This was just a small part of the Rocky’s with decent snow.
@@Treestofirewood More snow than I have at my place here in Alaska right now. Looked through the channel And it’s mostly just Firewood clips but that guy wrecking in the gravel pit is Savage. Is that an MXZ?
@nosoupforyou4307 yeah it was. That was his first time ever on a snowmobile. We still laugh about that today. Yeah this is my main channel and I run a tree service and firewood company. My riding buddy has a snowmobile channel and he will be posting some videos from our last trip shortly. @siikdesigns
@@Treestofirewood I remember my first time ha ha ha. I still do stupid things on my Snow Machine sometimes. Couple beers liquid courage and things get out of hand quick. L O L
Hey there, i see you got a new big stove. Im curious have you ever thought of a big batch burn boiler like a Garn unit..batch burning is more efficient and burn less wood plus with you having the wood kiln and the heated slabs outside you would have the thermal storage. I have a Garn unit and no stove on the market compares to one if these units very simple and very efficient. Thanks
I know of those. Before I purchased this boiler I looked at everything that is available. A farm would not be able to keep up with the demand that my kiln demands. Especially a snow melt system. Recovery time is way too slow. But they are nice units.
Waxing in the fuel plugged the filter. Keep anti gel in the tank all winter.
Yeah. I’ve been doing that ever since.
Walnut
What do you do with sawdust
We sell pretty much all of our saw dust to local farmers.
I bought one myself with 2 500 batteries in the cooler temps the saw works much better, saw is so nice but battery tech still sucks once they figure that out im sure gas saw will be obsolete I bought it to cut wood around the house a few trees a year to heat with a wood burning stove live in Illinois perfect for fall use when its nicer to split anyway sucks doing it in 80 degree day in the sun anyway tried a gas one tried a electric and never looked back but is very expensive hope is will pay for itself with ease and lack of having to buy fuel costed like 1200 if I am not mistaken would have to look it up gas saw comparable is like 800 so when you consider fuel plus I can charge batteries at customers houses lol
Yeah battery saws definitely have there place. There quieter and don’t require fuel. So as long as you have batteries you’re good. I do love mine and use it all the time. Batteries still have some work. In time they will shine.
Awesome 🤩
We used to have a way better machine to do this stuff and it was actually good for the machine too. You'll never believe it because they're extinct now but it was called a MAN
That man be true. I started my firewood business splitting wood with an axe. Can only do that for so long. Once the business grows machinery is necessary to grow.
Man, you walked over to the chipper truck, and I thought you were going to give me a rundown on the chipper truck.
Ok fine when I get back home in a few days I will go over my equipment for the tree business.
If you dig a trench out in the new spot, you can just throw cardboard boxes down there, when the box fills up just throw the whole thing in the boiler.
That is a good idea. I will definitely do something like that. Will make it easy to remove and use as energy for the boiler.
I always thought that these devices took much larger load - ie filled to the brim
I think that used to be the case. But with how efficient the new boilers are. Not so much. You just load with the load that is being put on it. It’s a little bit of a learning curve. But once you have it it’s easy.
@@Treestofirewood Tks - I currently run a stove and have been contemplating one of these for a long time
@user-zl9ri4bc7o are you looking or currently just heating your house? If so a wood stove is awesome. If it’s just your house I would stick with a wood stove. New build then maybe a boiler. We still burn occasionally on the house with our wood stove insert. I love it. There’s just something about that kind of heat. It’s the best.
Did Brute force and Timberwolf merge? Looks like Timberwolf processors for sale on there website???
That I don’t know. Maybe a used one?
Get u a ten inch inline fan from local grow shop for your vent fan 👍🏻
I do have big plans for an exhaust fan above the boiler. But I won’t tackle that till summer.

Where are you getting that much locus. Every farmer around here has been using them for fence post for the past generations
These trees were yard trees. The customer wanted them all removed. Locust is great wood. Had to keep all the logs for myself. All the rest we chipped.
What fan are you using behind you heat exchanger
The fan/heater is an all in one unit. 250k btu heater.
It’s nice to hear you say dry wood only. I’m the same way. There’s no circumstance that wet wood should be used in any wood burning appliance. Efficiency goes out the window, more smoke is generated (also causes creosote formation). Good outline of what your experience has been. Thanks
Dry wood is the only way to be as efficient as possible. Cleaner burn. Faster recovery times.
hi there looks good . best to all john
She definitely does.
use off road fuel
That’s all I’ve been filling it with.
Shouldn't there be a diverter plate in the top heat exchanger to make the multi pass... If there was I thought you would have pulled it out 🤔
All the other c series has a multi plate in there. The c800 does not have that.
What a monster !
She sure is
How often do you need to do the cleaning?
Ashes I do every 4/5 days. Full clean maybe once a month.
where is your chimney rain cap? I very seldom see a cap on wood boilers.
Be careful now this is a touchy subject 😆 so a couple things... Some say it can affect draft probably mainly on natural draft units and I believe the main argument is that the constant condensation from the wood builds up on the cab and drips back down the chimney... Therefore not really recommended since once you light it for the season it doesn't go out until the season is over... Then should be covered with a bucket or cap of some sort... That being said they typically perform fine either way but I believe most opt for no cap but their are definitely plenty that do have caps😊
No need to have one. In the off season if I’m not running it then sure. Otherwise no worries on water getting into the stove. Haven’t seen any water what so ever. Runs like a champ.
This is a guy who understands. Keep the wife happy. Don't make it difficult for her to heat the house. Also...might want to look at a full-face gas mask. I use one on my G7000 and I don't get stuff in my eyes as well.
Yep keep it simple and easy for her while I’m gone. And yeah I may get one of those for sure. Would be a huge help.
Great video Matt
Thanks
Those are some big ash pans 😳 It looks like she burns pretty clean for the amount of wood that has been going through it
It’s really amazing how clean this unit really burns. She doesn’t really smoke like a traditional boiler. I think because of how the fan comes from the bottom. And yeah for the amount of wood I’ve been putting in it you would think there would be so much more waste. But nope.
Great video/update Matt, have a great vacation.
Thank you
I like your channel. Ty! 🎉
