I dont know if this will be seen but id just like to say thank you for such a great two parter. You have taken me back to my childhood from the 70-80. I listen to the Scarred For Life podcast which brought me here. You guys are just brilliant. Thank you for a great evening of reminiscence
@@mikeprendergast1826 Thank you very much! 😃
It was The Day After that freaked out Reagan. “Threads” might’ve made him jump off a bridge if he had seen it. I doubt he could’ve handled it.
I was 11 years old when the day after came out in 1983 and watched its premiere on tv with my family. That movie changed my life in the sense I started researching and understanding nuclear war survival. It was not until a few years later that I caught the movie threads on VHS at a popular movie rental place that were popular in the 1980s. Both movies scared the crud out of me. Threads was much more graphic and the story was the prewar, nuclear war itself and I think covered 13 or so years post war. The day after ended after a few weeks from nuclear attack when doctor Oakes “Jason Robards” walked back home to Kansas City dying with radiation sickness. It was grim and u could only imagine weeks, months and years later. Threads showed how grim and horrible life would be years after a nuclear war. These movies were more scary that any slasher, ghost or zombie movie because it’s reality of what really can happen.
The final scenes are 13 year's after the bomb....that would have made it 1997.
Back around 1980 or so, my social studies teacher said it only took 28 minutes for a Soviet missile to hit us. That creeped me out for a long time.
Found this on my Home page and had to give a watch to it. Bear with me, this is an odd little tale; I'm playing some silly mobile game where a secret agent fellow shoots at descending blocks and the sound effects of his rapid fire took me to a strangely dark feeling. I realised some time after that sound was so very close to that of the blasted teletype accompanying the intermittent bits of statistics throughout the movie. I'd only seen "Threads" once on American Public Broadcasting in the 80's but that sound stuck through with me all that time. Subsequently, I did purchase a copy through Amazon. It's too important a film to not have handy.
Went there in 1975 when I was 5. All I remember is the 'monsters' in a display behind a bank/console of switches which we were allowed to operate. The daleks were shouting "You must not touch the equipment!" at my cousin and I. Great stuff!
The original Alien trilogy were allegories for the following themes. 1. Alien 1979 - Male sexual assault. 2. Aliens 1986 - the Vietnam War. 3. Alien 3 1992 - Aids.
This video is great. I went to the Blackpool exhibition about 3 times and loved it. I loved seeing all 7 of the Doctors costumes on one side and the companions costumes on the other. Then further along was the Davros and Daleks section. Loving the classic Doctor who seasons i thought the exhibition was great. I've watched Doctor who since jon Pertwee first played the 3rd Doctor and have never stopped. I'm 61 now and still loving it.
I went numerous times gents with old friends from my childhood - We were all Doctor Who fans - My doctors were the first five - I have very fond memories of the exhibition - Subscribed 👍
I hoped this was a history piece with the end cold war but it's become supremely relevant today with the Ukarine War and Putin's nuclear sabre rattling.
It's a weird social experiment for sure, MkUltra style of imagery spiked with confusion to mystify the messenger in a cloak of superiority.
such a good show loved it since it was first shown
This was fantastic
dary of the triffids gave me the fear, chocky was pretty messed up too.
shame they would never make a series like this now....mind u they would damage it now, look what the BBC did to dr who which is dire now.
I was 20 when this came out. Still gives me the heebie jeebies to this day. The guys voice at the beginning of this video sent chills down my spine. I have tried talking to younger friends about how it felt growing up in the Cold War era where we regularly discussed in the school playground what we'd do if we got the 4 minute warning. (Needless to say as teenagers it was usually something rude!)
Forced to watch threads in school at the age of 9 If I remember, I remember everyday waiting for nuclear war
TOO QUIET.
I watched this a few weeks back . So freakin scary 😨
Exactly what our Politicians are foolishly pushing us into.
Nations should create redundant & backups of food, fuel, warmth and hospitalisation which cannot be located & destroyed in nuclear winter somehow.
Nations should discard these cretinous weapons.
@@earthman6700 that comment is a no-brainer.
Threads terrified the living daylights out of me and still does. Saw it for the first time in 1985 on TBS . And watched it again in 2015. Left me just as depressed as I was when I was 14-years old. This film pulls no punches and hits you right in the gut ! Even more terrifying it almost became a reality. Let’s pray to God it never does
I have watched this more time than I can count. Horrifying and important. (Howey here)
I remember missing half of Destiny Of The Daleks due to a family holiday!
We had to watch this in school, it absolutely terrified me. Still get chills now
thanks for the video. I liked the last episode the best and always wanted to know more . Who where the people who trapped them and why. looking out of the window seeing the stars stayed with me . hehe some one is watching Lifeforce :-)
The reason Spearhead From Space was shot on film, on location is due to one of the many 1970s strikes at the BBC.
You need to get in touch with the atomic hobo (Julie McDowel). She is an expert on nuclear war in Britain and was influenced (and horrified) by this film. The atomic hobo is a great podcast as well Also, the cat scene they did by having the cat with catnip, and then played it backwards. I was 9 when this came out and it scared me like nothing else. Although apparently, they wanted to use the cast of Corrie to star in it What would have happened to the Kabin? 😂😂
where can I get a copy of volume 1 and 2?

Really enjoyable con, roll on 2022
I visited the exhibition in 1985 too. I was a combination of terrified and excited. Absolutely loved it, and one of my earliest Doctor Who memories. Was devastated when I went back to Blackpool in about 1987 and hadn't realised it was gone. Great memories of a time long past. Edited to add - I was the same age, 5 years old, and I remember exactly the feelings you mentioned - my heart beating out my chest, the darkness as you walked down the stairs. When the Dalek appeared in the console room I literally jumped into my Dad's arms. But I still loved it.
I also remember being terrified after seeing this. I was about 12 at the time. I think it's power (as mentioned here) is how it starts off all seemingly all normal with a potential romance story with news reports and newspaper headlines in the background. When it kicks off, IT REALLY KICKS OFF! A classic production and truly unforgettable!
Can remember going there in the early 80s , i was about 5 or 6 and i can remember being petrified at the dalek.
Just ordered my copy :) 80s was my era. There was some weird stuff that sometimes I'm not sure if I'm remembering it right, or if it really existed. Thank you for this - looking forward so much to Vol. 3 :)
Glad you enjoyed the video Sara. :)
I’m absolutely obsessed with the exhibition at the moment,I even recreated it in Minecraft
I went every year in the 80s. Is there a book then on the exhibition!?
It's free to download online. Sorry for the late reply.
@@geekyscifitv8208 Id rather have a phyical book though
Whoops, yes, Peter Pratt was the Master in The Deadly Assassin not Geoffrey Beevers. My bad. What a...well, prat!! 😂
I remember the carving in the river like it was yesterday! #picturebox
Ordered the book, I cannot wait to read it. I was only 2.5 when Highlander was released, lol! Fun fact, before Queen were selected to make the 'unofficial' soundtrack for the film, it was Marillion who were first approached to do it. i think they refused because of touring conflicts at the time.
I really wish you would paper publish this brilliant ebook. I went to a printer to get a hard copy and he wanted £65 for a single loose unbound copy. Wow. Also maybe do a sequel for the years it returned to Blackpool....
Great content with a really interesting guest, thanks Jonathan. Always found Highlander a unique take on SciFi. I was in my teens when the movie came out, voraciously watching anything on rented VHS tapes at that time. Clancy Brown as Kurgan is the character that stuck in my memory the most. I loved his engineered sword and how he delivered that line in church "Father! Forgive me , I am a worm..." - powerful stuff and only his 7th credited performance according to IMDB. The sequels always bothered me too, having immortals when the prize was won just didn't sit right - forget them, stick with the original ! I'll keep an eye out for the book.
Cheers, thanks Paul ! :)
Thanks Paul, Clancy is brilliant in the film!
Was Blackpool Cyberman during late 80s and was back in 2008. Also was a Dalek getting changed as Cyberman/Leader was award getting dressed in the back of the shop as had not much space as the Dalek was going round on a train track. Was with Doctor John Feild was doing the Doctor the times...
Awesome!
Great video, really looking forward to reading the book. Thank you for the video and thanks to the authors for the ,no doubt, many hours of work this has involved. 👍👍👍
Cheers!
Nice content, brilliant movie to have reviewed. I had a re-watch of Alien over the last couple of days. It really is a masterpiece, given that its all practical effects and sets, no CGI, first really strong female scifi lead, amazing 'everyman' cast, keeping the alien off camera and wonderful subliminal queues throughout. Alien and Aliens are in my top 5 jointly.
Thanks for inviting us on Dave! Thoroughly enjoyed talking about the book.
It was an absolute pleasure. I'd love to have you both on again!
Looking forwards to getting the book Friday :)
I went a couple of times as a kid in the 70s and 80s. There was someone dressed as a cyberman outside the Tardis; as a kid it blew my mind. Once inside down the dark steps, those daleks scared the crap out of me.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one!
It was a pleasure chatting with you. "Blackpool Remembered" will be available to download in PDF format on Friday August 28th, from blackpoolremembered7485.wordpress.com
My parents took me in about 1976 or 77. Unfortunately I have no memory of the exhibition inside, I only remember the entrance to it :( , but even that me be a later memory, as we used to go to Blackpool yearly. I have more memories of the waxworks and zoo. And when I went back to blackpook in my late teens I didn't realize that it had clsoed. Such a shame, so that kicked off my own obsession with collecting, reading and watching everything scifi. I enjoyed my visit to Museum of Modern SciFi in Allendale, Neil (who, I know you've interviewed) has created a brilliant exhibition of props & costumes. Please keep these videos coming, really enjoying the content.
I'm sure the memories will come flooding back when you download the book on Friday!
Thank you Paul, that is so nice to hear!
Great interview. Already seen the film and really liked it. I think the painting on the wall behind him is by his wife, who did the artwork for the film.
Thank you!
