Basic Folk
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 มิ.ย. 2006
Basic Folk is a podcast with honest conversations between musicians and Cindy Howes, a well-versed public radio host and music curator, and guest host Lizzie No, a talented singer/songwriter. Basic Folk approaches interviews with warmth, humor and insightful questions. This podcast fosters the folk community and showcases a genre that is often misunderstood. Basic Folk features complex conversations about the human experience witnessed from an artistic angle. Our definition of “folk” is extremely broad, so you’ll hear interviews from Amythyst Kiah, Tom Rush, The Lumineers and many more.
Basic Folk is dedicated to showcasing the best in folk and roots musicians including BIPOC musicians who have been excluded, or felt like they did not belong, in the folk world. Both Cindy and Lizzie bring unique perspectives to our honest conversations and are dedicated to changing the landscape and the gatekeepers of the folk music community.

Year-End Reflections with Cindy & Lizzie: A Wild 2024 Ride, ep. 290
It's 2024 recap time on Basic Folk! Cindy & Lizzie dive into a most special year-end reflection, featuring highlights from our honest conversations with folk musicians. We revisit THE top episode of the year, Anna Tivel & Jeffrey Martin (basicfolk.com/anna-tivel-jeffrey-martin-eyeballs-ice-cream-and-portland-oregon/) 's insightful discussion on navigating artistic challenges and living a simple life. Cindy shares her favorite episode featuring her co-host Lizzie No talking about her career-defining album, Halfsies (basicfolk.com/lizzie-no-the-goat-on-gender-tiaras-and-leveling-up/) (our 250th episode!). In turn, Lizzie's favorite honest convo came from Leyla McCalla onboard the Cayamo Cruise (basicfolk.com/leyla-mccallas-joyful-rebellion-sun-without-heat-and-the-freedom-of-play/) . We sat in the ship lounge and dug in with Leyla about the "folk process" and her thoughts on cruising, as a Haitian-American, as we ported in Hispaniola aboard a luxury cruise line. (Spoiler: it is complex!)
Basic Folk checks in with friend Jontavious Willis about his biggest lesson of 2024 and what defining success as an independent artist looks like as he has just released his latest West Georgia Blues. We also welcome Rose Cousins' heartfelt words on embracing change as she prepares to release her next record, Conditions of Love - Vol. 1 (out March 14, 2025). As the episode ends, Lizzie leaves us with some words of wisdom:
"We are at a time of year where your body wants to be doing less. We've just survived a chaos clown show of violence in the election. Our culture is shifting rapidly. It's okay if the things that used to work for you don't work anymore. You're allowed to start over. You're allowed to try new things. You're allowed to tell people in your life, 'I've changed.' You're allowed to listen to new artists. You're allowed to change how you dress. You can do it all. 2025 is a new year and you have freedom. And that's my blessing to you." - Lizzie No.
Goodbye 2024!

Dave Simonett, lead singer and songwriter of the bluegrass-adjacent Trampled by Turtles, is a talented musician AND a great outdoorsman. From the small town of Mankato, Minnesota, to the vibrant music scenes of Duluth and Minneapolis, Simonett shares his upbringing in a musically-inclined, nature-loving family, shaped by the sounds of church hymns and classic rock. In our Basic Folk conversatio...

I (lizzie) first came across Becca Stevens via her collaboration with string group The Attica Quartet. Her new album, Maple to Paper, is really different from her previous releases. If you think you know everything that there is to know about Becca Stevens as a singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer, you are wrong. And you are going to be so amazed by this new record. It's completely stripp...

Hot off the heels of Twisted Pines' latest release, Love Your Mind, Kathleen Parks is here to dig into her uncelebrated polka origins. Daughter of renowned trumpetist Eric Parks, the younger Parks grew up in New York's Hudson Valley in a very creative family (her mother was also a dancer and the one who made Kathleen practice all the time). She started young on the violin and was surrounded by ...

We're starting with the end in our conversation with Kasey Anderson. On the pod, we've covered a lot of firsts; debut album, origin stories and the beginnings. Officially, this latest album, 'To the Places We Liv...

Great interview with the man. Picked up In The Throes eleven years ago and was utterly convinced JM was one of the best we've had in many, many years, one of the best of the 21st century. Fo real. That opinion has only been reinforced with each subsequent album. So nice to hear him in such a peaceful place these days, that really is reflected in this most recent album. Compassionate, empathetic, and timeless songs. Thankful for the music.
🍀🥂🐎👍
In a world full of bullshit Taylor Swifts and other no-talent but famous assclowns, John Moreland is a breath a fresh air and the absolute real deal. Thank you for being you, John.
John has been a favorite of mine since I ran across him many years ago - even his rebellious early stuff like Dust Bowl Souls is a breath of fresh air in a sterile and stale music scene. John is a no-frills / no nonsense kind of singer/songwriter, that lets the spaces in his instrumentation shine the light on the lyrics and emotion of his voice - No one like JM !! Thanks Basic Folk for bringing John's music to the masses.
You're both woke?! Nope!
<3
Barefoot, and in the kitchen.. Know your role.
This guys music is so subtle. He has a very nice voice. Obviously an excellent songwriter. Thanks John Moreland for being you.
Jake, what’s up with the hail Satan hoodie? I am trying to listen to you talk but I keep laughing.
I like Deborah's sentence about the music of Greg Brown which "traveled with me through my life". I have heard the Poet Game in the 80ties and since then with my wife and our kids, we sing Greg's songs everywhere, in the bathtub, in the car, at home - everywhere. He's a true singer, like K T Tunstall, Cerys Matthews, Townes van Zandt and of course Bob Dylan.
❤❤❤ FELICIA AND KENNY 'S GIRL 🌹🌹🌹
Love both of these guys! I love the relationship between the two of them and their music. Met Chris on a flight once - chatted briefly -- nicest guy.
Thank you for a wonderful interview with Greg Brown, whose music has traveled with me through my life. And you should be proud of your interview questions! They were great and let me see into the real Greg. Loved it all!
Worst channel on youtube. Just stop. Do something else. Cant dislike enough.
Thank you, Meg! For these insights into the creative process, and for recommending Kay Jamison's work. I'm a poet and these ups and down really do go with the territory. It's only when they get out of control that they become debilitating. If you can manage them, work with them, they can lead to some genuine creative breakthroughs which would not otherwise have happened. Love your work, your songs! Combining poetry with the gift of music: not something that everyone can do. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Gordon Lightfoot. Where would we all be without them? All of them "touched by fire". But yours is a gentler voice, a gentler fire. More on the low side than the high, but that can be healing.
I have 0 clue what this is, but it’s got a good vibe so I gotta like 👍

White supremacy is lie. This is the definition of judging people by the color of their skin. Blacks resent your virtue signaling and assumption that they need you to achieve what so many Americans that are black achieve. Just so you can pat yourself on the back.
This was great! I play mandolin and fiddle. Andrew and Emily are my biggest influences. Thank you so much for this interview.
molly is not going to make it, no charisma
you're probably jealous....😂😛
What planet are you from
I’m embarrassed to say that I just discovered Molly. She’s a virtuoso flat picker and a great singer and song writer.
I love listening to Lizzie No while motorcycling. Just cruising some back road with nowhere to be.
Tyrone Cotton is a legend!
Phil Moore is a great singer, songwriter, so says his totally unbiased Uncle Mike
These are so awesome. Thanks so much for making and uploading them.
Sarah you are extremely talented and one of my favorite musicians. Loved hearing you speak about keeping the wolves at bay. I am very thankful to have been alive at the same time as you so that I can experience all the music you have made, and will make
Great interview! Sarah is a treasure. 😊

i love phil moore and beth tacular, and mark paulson. sad they broke up but phil carrying on the bowerbirds just as grand ❤

Hey you two made a smooth interview! It was nice to learn about John, I admit Lilly is how I found this.
great interview
Morby is 🔥
Growing up, my dad never said I love you. My brothers and I saw him as the punisher, as we disappointed him. I was 37, sitting with him after his open heart surgery, when I heard him say I love you. In Never you
I never heard it again.
Great
Well Done 👍 Enjoyed the Show, all the Best from Oz 🇦🇺 👍
I love this song so much! So much longing but filled with hope and love and. . . .I just LOVE this song.
That is one powerful instrument
Hahahaha! 6 hours and I'm only the 3rd view. When will you evil communists realize that no one supports your racism against white people and your desire to surgically mutilate children who like the wrong colored shoes.
Love to hear about different banjos. And love to hear that you are using richlite on your instruments. I have built 3 banjos with Patrick Sawyer from Pisgha banjos and that's all he uses. The material is great to work with and if you ever need to repair it, it's invisible. Just sand some scrap pieces to make a powder and add glue. The perfect filler. The material has no grain. However if you like the look of grain, I have seen a piece of material similar to richlite, but has a "grain". I bought it from wood supplier from Chilliwack, BC. I passed it on to Patrick so he could try it out. Not sure what he ended up doing with it. Your 6 string is very similar to Allison de Groots Seeder banjo. I love the history of the inlays you chose. Cheers.
In Blount County, AL, its pronounced Blau-nt. Never heard it pronounced how you do.
So adorable!
@lecoshayo I've been thinking the same thing, only voice I've ever heard that I can really compare to Joanna's,
One might need to "learn" to appreciate her voice, it has taken myself some time as well, but I am absolutely in love with he music.
@ClearMindDontKnow It's most definitely an original :)
thanks Tom, great song great job, thanks for the post
