Very helpfull, especially the advice to keep the ulna stable when the radius turns around it when pronating. I suppose you also have to keep the radius stable when suppinating? In that case the ulna turns around the radius?
I JUST NOW started to do mental practice. Very neat, but also taxting!! I use it with passages I miss at the keyboards! aitsxa great alturnative when you "dont feel like practicing"!!
Let me get on topic. This was an excellent video I should show my friends. I’m thinking about Liszt pieces where you can’t do this; that man was a maniac meant to make every aspect as difficult as possible😂 either way great video
Wonderfully explained! So far I've tried this and it feels as though I am making faster progress!
Thank you! Another very effective way is from Karl-Heinz Kämmerling: Play the melody as normal as possible and the inner voice as soft as possible or even completely without any sound. Or: play the melody as normal as possible and the inner voice playing each note twice and/or staccato. Happy practising all and thank you, Prof. Boyd, for your helpful and very nice channel!
i'm self-taught and want to play classical, preferably Chopin...i'll be playing seriously a year in two months....i can see myself to be really good in 4-5yrs....the only one i need to improve on is memorizing....i can't play by ear so i need to rely on visual memory....since i'm self-taught can i eventually call myself a pianist
Sounds good! You got this!
i can't play ear and way too hard to memorize music....so which is best when playing classical: the visual to music sheets or memorizing the music score?...i'm doing okay playing without looking at the keys at this time
Brilliant explanation ❤
Thank you! 🙂 Glad it helped!
But it seems ignore the movement of small. For small hand if you don’t raise up your elbow, your thumb is unable to reach to the note next to the middle finger.
Thank you so much for these valuable technique and tips🙏🤗
You are so welcome! Glad to be helpful!
Thanks Ma'am ❤ for sharing productive technics Could you please make a video on how to play hanon correctly
Great video. Could I suggest playing the left hand, mirroring what the right hand plays? That is, starting with f-sharp and d (with thumb and three) and proceeding down in b minor, then b major, then b-sharp diminished (with e), then c diminished (with f) - then b-flat minor etc. In the original version, the two hands are playing different patterns. It sounds dissonant (?like Bartok) if you play it hands together, but the right hand can help the left as they are playing exactly the same disposition of black and white notes.
I use very slow practice when I am first learning the notes. Then fast practice to get the feel of how everything has to move at full tempo, not worrying about a few missed or wrong notes, but also not doing so much that I engrain the mistakes. Then back to slow practice, with those good motions, to get relaxed. Then little bits of very fast practice, one or two measures, particularly for trouble spots, then string longer bits of fast practice together. Then when I'm pretty happy with how the piece is shaping up I do a mix of fast and slow practice - the fast to get mentally used to keeping the concentration flowing through the piece and the slow to relax and prevent sloppiness from creeping in.
these are really great exercises. but i could have without the background music. i don't get why everyone who teaches exercises adds music. i want to just focus on what i am doing. i don't want any other stimulus. i quit my gym because of this music issue.
Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you Kate. 73 and still loving to learn. You are an inspiration!
Thanks! Glad you're here!
You just saved my life!!! Thank u so much!! Now i understand it clearly! God bless you!
Glad it helped! Thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much! I’m learning this, and it really helped!
So glad! You got this!
@@ThePianoProfKateBoyd Thank you so much ❤️
I learned chords by sight-reading their notes on the staff. I don't understand why the internet is filled with images showing chords on piano keys!
Glad that worked for you! Some people find it easier to visually map the staff to the keys. Have fun!
Thank you Prof! New adult learner here, and had lot of difficulty in hand positioning causing wrist pain and tension in the arm. Thank you for your videos!
You're most welcome! You got this!
This video was exactly what I needed! It answered all my questions and clarified everything perfectly. You're amazing, Dr. Boyd! Thank you so much!
Fantastic! So glad it was helpful!
Excellent not many teachers would not discuss this. You sre amazing
Thanks so much - glad you found it helpful!
This is really good content!
Thanks so much! Glad you're here!
I play guitar... since 15 yo, so for... 20 years.. and started piano 4 months ago... What I feeling difficult on piano is to find scales, the basic major and minor chords I can play well, but I cannot understand scales when I see the images, it doesn't make sense to me..
Keep at it! Scales use recurring patterns of half steps and whole steps. Once you know the patterns you don't need to use music to find the notes; you can just transpose to other keys. Good luck!
Gracias por todo, Kate. ❤❤❤
De nada!! 🥰🥰🥰
I’m just learning this piece after avoiding it for 40 year. I avoided it because of the polyrhythm. You’ve explained it so well. Thank you.
Wonderful! Good luck with it!!
This was so helpful! I'm currently working on two pieces that have challenging octave sections (one is Mozart's Rondo alla Turca, which hasn't been difficult to learn, but the octave passages do cause fatigue after a few measures). (The other is a ragtime/stride piece with octave passages in both the right and left hands.) I was wondering if you have (or are planning) any videos on the particular challenge of fast, broken octaves (either in alla Turca or longer examples such as the Beethoven's Pathetique first movement). Thank you! This is one of the best piano channels on TH-cam -- I have learned so much from you!
Good idea - thanks for the suggestion! I've added it to my list.
@@ThePianoProfKateBoyd Thank you!

Shes a great teacher!

Op 90 n 4, isn't It ?
Yes, it's a typo! 🙈
Have you practice mental studies for theses pieces before ?
Absolutely - I do mental practice for every piece I learn. It really helps!
@@ThePianoProfKateBoyd I use same methode you used in music deliberation in the repertoire and try and error , but I thought that it is a weakness from me , when I saw you use that it give me a push of courage.
I have followed all of your advice. Thank you..❤️ I can also say that I pre-plan what I'm gonna practice the next day. It makes it so much easier to sit down and get focused without wasting any time.
Wonderful! I’m so glad to hear this. Btw I was just using this method today when I was practicing - happy to hear it works for you, too!
Why can't Americans pronounce pianist
Different English dialects pronounce it differently; both are correct. 👍
Thanks Kate 🎉
Thanks……. Do you think I should learn an easier version or will it spoil it and make it more confusing later, so I should just wait until I’m as good as the song I want to play?
I don’t see a problem with learning an easier version of something before it you tackle the original. You will become more familiar with the piece when the time comes.
Damn right. Practice slow, learn fast.
Well said!!👍👍👍
Thank you for highlighting the tripod of support, great guide!
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks so much!
Thanks for this. My teacher has been discussing these movements whilst playing this piece by Debussy.🎉🎉🎉
Great! Staying aligned to the keys is so important to improving facility. Good luck!
thank you so much for this book recommendation
You're so welcome! I hope you enjoy it!
Nice!
