Our Advent series is entitled Things Concerning Himself. In Luke 24, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples and opens their minds to the scriptures so they can see Jesus in the Law, Prophets, and Psalms. Beginning at the end of the story helps us see the importance of Advent. Recognizing Jesus as the Messiah filled His followers with hope, love, peace, and joy. That recognition does the same for us. We come to that recognition as we see Jesus in the scriptures, all the things concerning himself.

Here's Jonathan again. Jonathan routinely reveals something about God's character. This is the last time we'll encounter him, so pay attention. In chapter 20, God's lovingkindness is highlighted in Jonathan's love for David. We learn that our love toward others reflects God's love toward us; it goes beyond what is required because that's God's character. It inspires others to love like God love...

Something is changing between Saul and David. As David becomes more loved, Saul becomes more jealous. It gets so bad that Saul is trying to kill David, but God provides for His plan. God responds to humility with grace and provision. In this chapter, we will taste how God faithfully provides for David.

Jonathan, the king's son, is back on the scene! As we have noted before, that means we should pay attention. On the heels of David killing Goliath, Jonathan gives us a picture of what it means to be "one in spirit" and how that stirs up a love that blesses others at unlimited cost to yourself. This kind of selfless love for our neighbor is what Jesus' followers are called to and empowered for.

The driving concern of these two chapters is the honor of Yahweh’s name, reputation, and glory. God poses the question to Samuel, which David heroically answers: Are you concerned with God’s name, reputation, and glory? Humility is boldly concerned with God’s name, reputation, and glory!

After reading the chapter, Pastor Andrew realized his mic was not on. The video picks up at this point. In the chapter, Saul faces another challenging task from God. King Saul is faced with three questions to structure the chapter: Do you know your people's history? Do you know God's character? Do you remember that God is the KING? Saul faces a challenge and responds with pride. Saul's actions teach that pride steals the glory from those beneath, beside, and above. Pride also tends to panic because pride ignores the word of God, and in the end, pride leaves us alone. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Elder George Ownes provides the perspective of the armor-bearer who followed Jonathan on his mission. Again, we see confidence, commitment, and courage on display. We can exhibit these qualities as we follow Jesus on his mission.

In Chapter 14, we are introduced to a new character, Jonathan. Jonathan contrasts Saul’s pride and will become a compliment to David’s humility and courage. Through a courageous act of bold faith, Jonathan teaches us that humility rejects passivity, takes responsibility, leads courageously, and accepts a higher calling/reward.

These chapters describe two necessary events for Saul to become king: the people have to accept Saul as king, and Samuel has to step aside as leader. These chapters also reveal two fundamental truths about a relationship with God. First, even if the people are unfaithful, God keeps His promise and brings about His plan. Second, humility empowers us to acknowledge our sins and find grace to help...

In First Samuel 9 and 10, Saul becomes king over Israel. Through this process, we are warned not to confuse insecurity with humility and learn that humility flows from God's message to us and grows in God's presence with us.

Jumping to chapter 8 (last week, chapters 5-7 were not recorded), the people of Israel ask for a king. It is not the request that is the problem. It is the kind of king they want. Looking at other Old Testament texts, we learn the kind of king they need and that humble dependence on God, which brings transformation, is God’s desire for the king and His people.

Continuing our series in 1 Samuel, we turn to chapter four. Our theme for the study is God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
