Airplane Checkout Flight In A Diamond DA40
To fly a new model aircraft, you will need to take an airplane checkout flight. In addition to studying the POH, you will need to know how to use the airplanes controls and avionics. You will also need to prove you can handle the aircraft. Let's see how Ryan does on his airplane checkout flight in the Diamond DA40.

    CFI's need to remember what its like having 0 hours and then go further and think what it must be like to have 0 knowledge about aviation or aeronautics. This guy was visibly uncomfortable and probably holding back terror at points. More talking clearly didn't help him in the air. I would guess a more thorough briefing would have gone a long way and taking control to help him destress would have taken the edge off. Love the DA40 so its great to see how a lesson in these would go. Hard to watch this one.

    Okay here is a video topic suggestion. Fly an instrument approach with a back course in the G1000. I messed one of those up a few weeks ago. I shot it again and let the GFC fly it for me. I'll have to see if I can find a back course around here. I've never flown one so, it might be entertaining. 😀 My understanding is the cdi must be set to the front course freq. or it will reverse sense. I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Great videos, thanks for posting all these. I started flying the DA40 recently for my instrument training and it has been a treat to fly. A question for you, as you seem well-versed in the DA40. The flying school I am at has an identical DA40 to you, with G1000 and KAP140 autopilot etc. Our #4 CHT gauge is inop, and I'm wondering if this will cause a problem in my instrument checkride? My CFII isn't entirely sure, as per the regs you must deactivate and placard a non-working instrument (if it's not required equipment) ... but how would you deactivate 1 single CHT gauge on a G1000? The placard is the easy part of course, but we aren't sure exactly if something else needs to be done before the checkride so the DPE doesn't make it an issue. It's confusing us so thought I would ask if you've had any experience with this.

    • @diamondstarpilot
      @diamondstarpilot หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could have an A&P disconnect the defective CHT probe (under the cowling) and make a log book entry stating it is deactivated pending replacement. Then placard it in the cockpit. But, you may have a bigger issue that will null that solution. The AFM Minimum Operational Equipment List states the "Integrated Engine Instrument" must be functional. I could not find an exact definition of what that is but, in Chapter 6.5 under engine, all items on the MFD engine page are listed. So, I could see a DPE saying that the engine page is the Integrated Engine Instrument in which case the airplane is not airworthy unless all indicators on that page are functional. I do not know if that is correct but, you will have a hard time disproving that line of thinking based on the AFM (unless I missed something somewhere). If you cannot get the probe replaced before the check ride, I would talk to the DPE ahead of time and explain what is going on and see what his interpretation is before having it pop up when you are ready to get the check ride done. Hope this helps.

    In the NG model you don't have to lean at all because it basically has a car engine in it.

    • @diamondstarpilot

      That is incorrect. The NG has a FADEC system that manages the mixture for you. Leaning is still occurring but, a computer manages it rather than manually moving a lever.

    As a flight simmer and pilot student, I can assure you flying IRL is easier than flightsim a VFR flight, IRL you have a bunch of senses to help you out, the feedback of the yoke, how your body gets jerked around, in the sim you only have your vision to get infos, which can make it overwhelming in critical phases such as landing where you want to adjust everything as quickly as possible.

    • @mrmisterno1
      @mrmisterno1 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Student pilot and avid flight simmer here too. Yep, IRL is definitely easier. Many think IRL is harder because you actually care if you crash the airplane. In the sim you're way less cautious and accept a lot of stuff that you wouldn't IRL. Taxiing a Diamond IRL is a pain though. That one is easier in the sim.

    • @matthew07
      @matthew07 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually did a discovery flight in a light sport and have around 150h in MSFS on GA planes. Well the first 30 minutes were pretty hardcore for me because of all the updrafts and downdrafts and the wind gusting 10kts. I had the stick and the instructor everything else and it was really difficult to maintain heading and altitude. I guess it's easier to get into oscilations IRL as it is in the sim where fighting the wind does the job whereas in reality you are banking +-15 deg constantly. After that I became used to it but it certainly required a transition from SIM flying. Hoping on starting my PPL soon though.

    • @danieldevadas6481
      @danieldevadas6481 หลายเดือนก่อน

      it really depends. I primarily used the SR22 in the sim, with its nice G1000 + autopilot suite, but I learned to fly with a C152, zero screens, with a good ol' six pack. That was a lot harder for me, since trimming with your hands with much more delay on the V/S gauge makes settling in a tad harder. It's easier to find places on the ground though.

      Flights sims can be quite helpful when integrated into a complete training plan. Xplane is the backbone of several Basic Aviation Training Devices (BATD) which when used with an instructor can count toward required flight hours on several certificates. While nothing beats actual flight time, gaining familiarity with controls, systems and techniques in a quieter more controllable environment can be a valuable tool.

      The ECUs require power to run the engine. The main battery can run those for about 30 min. There is also a backup battery for ECU B that will provide an additional 30 minutes. So, you have 30-60 mins before the engine shuts down. This is similar to having two e-mags installed in a non FADEC system.

    Definitely helps me out with my own DA40 landings. Reinforcing the importance of a stabilized approach is the biggest thing I've negated to implement. I usually come in too fast or high, which leads to a bounce and then a go-around. Some other things too I noticed with your student that I've been doing is forcing the plane down even while in flare. This leads to a bounce, or at best a hop like shown in the video. Thank you for the video and all the camera action. It really helps visualize what I've been doing incorrectly and will be something I'll keep in mind next flight.

    Just found your channel, and I’m glad I did!!! I’m 12 hrs in at a 141 and have been flying the DA-40. My issue is maintaining center line on takeoff and landings. We did some taxi training at an untoward airport and it helped. I start having a problem 15-20kts before Vr

      Slow steady pressure on the rudder pedals is the key especially as the speed increases. Happy feet with quick changes will get you in trouble. You'll get the hang of it with some practice.

      Awesome. Thanks! I will give it a try today. My CFI was telling me to use happy feet and that could be the problem I was having.

    Olso look for cracks in between in the components that hold the moving parts on the plane. Example in beetween the ailerons. 😊

    Exceeded the maximum landing flap speed on that slipped approach, would have been much safer to just make that a go around with all that speed
