Making Sense of Trump’s Clear Victory & Its Implications for American Democracy and the World
This is the first in several classes in which we reflect on and respond to the victory of Donald Trump in the just concluded presidential elections. It is, in one respect, shocking: a man not only twice impeached while previously in the office but also subject to multiple felony indictments and convictions, etc., was deemed at once suitable and preferable for the nation’s highest office by a majority of our fellow citizens. This speaks, among other things, to how rapidly and thoroughly political norms and social conventions have changed in the Trump era (which is also the era of social media). But in another respect, it shouldn’t be surprising. Donald Trump has a unique capacity to at once articulate the rage and grievance that characterizes much of the American electorate in the 21st century, while also inspiring confidence in his leadership and strength. The non-responsiveness and disarray in the Democratic party’s search for a suitable candidate to serve as his rival only complemented Trump’s appeal. In today's class, we concentrate on one main question: how do we make sense of Trump’s victory in terms of the reasons that led a majority of our fellow citizens in a broadly representative coalition to support him?

Was high inflation a central failure of the economic policy of the Biden presidency? Or instead was it the byproduct of one of its most important but unappreciated successes: restoring wage growth for those at the bottom of the ladder at the beginning and not at the very end of an economic recovery? If wage growth and not inflation is the most important and lasting impact of Biden's economic po...
Why and How 21st Century Capitalism Undermines American Democracy: A Problem for both Trump & Harris

We continue our discussion of the the interaction of democracy and capitalism in America in the 21st century, noting how large portions of the American public's paths to security let alone prosperity are undercut by a long-standing, slow building affordability crisis that became increasingly obvious and salient in light of the recent period of higher overall inflation. Further, the core expense...

With inflation under control, job growth at record highs, and income increasing rapidly for the middle class, it would seem that the economic fundamentals might propel Kamala Harris's campaign as her neck-in-neck race against Donald Trump for the presidency enters the homestretch. In the first and perhaps only debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Harris implemented a remarkably successful strategy, baiting Trump into revealing himself to be precisely what she asserted he is: angry, aggrieved, easily manipulated, and ultimately too detached from reality to be trusted with a second term as president. Are you gonna talk about how the census bureau admitted to over counting almost only democrats states and undercounting almost only republican states which benefitted the democrats in the 2022 midterms and this recent election? Or what about the fact that democrats are constantly against voter id and happened to only win states that don’t require voter id while losing all the ones that do? Its also strange that the heavily democrat states are the ones that happen to count the absolute slowest and weird how there were so many fewer votes this time (after republicans instituted better voting standards in many states). I’m not saying I have definitive proof that democrats are cheating but there is a hell of a lot of circumstantial evidence that indicates smoke. It’s hilarious how your types just conveniently ignore it all
Do you also think the Earth is flat too?
107 days to campaign, it would have be a miracle if Harris won. It was too easy to take Trump down in the debate. She needed to make Trumps major point hers, not just he’s a nasty greedy man without a clue.
Why is populism a bad thing and democracy a good thing? They seem like synonyms to me.
Thank you, this had been so clear.
Why do they wanna help people buy houses ($25K) when they can’t afford to maintain them? How is gov’t gona pay for that?! She has no policy plan on her website.
I don’t think Trump would have handled COVID well. He made so many people mad and said it was fake. I don’t believe he would’ve been ok with so much stimulus $$
Unrestricted unmonitored foreign aid and genocide in Palestine are the two major reasons for losing public support. Harris has said she will not change policies in the Middle East. Democracy needs deeds as well as talk. You are telling me someone who falsely said Israeli children were being beheaded a source of accurate information.
“Success” LOL Inflation, increased crime, more demands on limited social services from illegals, and hundreds of BILLIONS laundered through Ukraine and Israel wars. Throw that garbage out with rest of Dem policies. Normal people need to be back in charge
And of course, you guys are not taking into account the obvious jobs cuts that will happen to create the productivity needed to decrease prices. What's the point of increased wages if less people are employed? 😂 Classic Keynesian drivels, the goal of an economy is NOT to create jobs.
"We succeeded so much, WE FAILED!" I hope for a Trump presidency just to see the tears and the shattering of the delusions of people like you all. A Trump presidency will be great because he doesn't believe in your bunch of self-taught lies.
What nonsense is this? All Americans who support or will support Trump are Garbage!~~President Joe Biden
Yeah, that's it.
Bidenomics hasn't been a success. Eg the last thing you do is keep spending when inflation is soaring. Remember Janet Yellen in 2021 ''inflation is just transitory'' and you may argue inflation has come down but compare that to year on year. The reason why Trump will win is because Harris has not given the voter a reason to vote for her. She has not explained her policy positions in any detail and she most certainly could not go on Joe Rogan for 3hrs unscripted. ''Threat to Democracy'' - The media and Harris covered up Joe Biden's cognitive decline. Democrats have fixed Primaries, the party (not the people) has chosen the current nominee and they weaponized the criminal justice system to indict their political opponent. ''unconstitutional' - Biden tried to forgive student loan debt, which is unconstitutional. ''American foreign policy'' - is absolutely terrible and now Democrats have become the party of war in line with the NEOCONS post 2015 where the MIC thought that HRC was a much better bet all we will have under the Democrat regime is endless wars versus Trump's America First policies. Also just look at some of the absolute disasters since Biden came into office. Afghanistan withdrawal, Ukraine has been a total disaster (unless you are a defense contractor) and Gaza has been terrible as well. Yet there has been zero accountability for Democrats. The economy is bad for the majority of people that don't have assets and haven't benefited from high inflation Crime is up and now largely unreported Illegal Border Crossings are up Wars - involvement in wars is up Also don't make any mistake Democrats lie, as does Trump, so forget the lies, for get the rhetoric, focus purely on policy and you are better off under Trump.
Remarkably self-delusional.
Only one of two things are true about this guy. Either he is personally profiting of the corruption of the left. Or he is in need mental illness treatment. The economy is burning, the world is burning, and the border is burning. Let me guess it was the beer bug and and the Republicans fault.
Sorry, aside from weapons manufacturing, where was Bidenomics successful? Retail outlets ? (Macy's and Nordstrom in San Francisco closed), commercial real estate? Super markets (99cent closed, many Walgreens, Walmart and CSVs closed) , restaurants (TGIF, Hooters, Outback closed? Automobile manufacturing? The state of California has a 60B deficit.
Something I heard that reflects this. I'm paraphrasing but the "credentialed expert class" often mistakes the measurement/metrics of a thing for the thing itself. The economy is great! GDP is up! Number go up! Please disregard the decades of mass immigration (both legal and illegal), globalization, outsourcing of jobs, offshoring of our manufacturing base, etc. All shifting the balance of capital/assets vs. labor in favor of capital.
@@Idontevenwanachannel And you think the Republicans have no blame in this and will solve this? When Trump was President, the only real legislation that passed was the TCJA, essentially a tax cut that disproportionately benefited the wealthy (i.e. more trickle-down).
99cent is $1.25 now
This is probably the most asinine assessment I have seen on TH-cam.
It's because he's a federal agent (paid or otherwise).

Your comments on Sinwar amount to laundering Israel's actions in Gaza, in my view.
How is having more job opportunities at a fair wage going to hurt a native born population?
Harris and Trump are horrible - we are screwed either way. Neither of them are going to help the poor, disenfranchised, or even the working class person. Capitalism; fantastic for some - terrible for the masses!
Fiat currency and inflation is kicking in

pretty on point as I see it. Hyper partisanship and propaganda are doing a number on America

Disagree. Less working class vattling for labor would be good for the working class. History shows this.
History does not show this. Solidarity has always been more successful than tribalism among workers
@@Twangaming Most great shifts in socio-economic systems has been a popularization and redistribution of power or reactionary shifts backwards.
@@mellowInventor what is your point? Reactionary shifts backwards, by definition, do not help workers
@@Twangaming A shift doesn't necessarily have to be positive for everyone. I was just pointing out that if it's not an action beneficial to a greater portion of the population, it's to restrict the power back to a smaller set of people.

Trump didn’t believe the immigration policy failed. He made it fail! Let’s get that straight !!!
Hmm but Harris cannot raise the salience of immigration this election including saying things they would like to quote her on, lie about and pick holes in. I'm sure she would dearly love to make all the points the Mayor of Springfield and Rep Gov of Ohio have been saying Don't forget, they're trying to pin this whole thing on her and it's the business of the Dept of Homeland Security The heavy lifting on setting the record straight is being done by her surrogates

The Supreme Court is actually very balanced. And if you look at who voted for what recently, you would understand that to be true. The three radicals are the women on the left. The three people that are considered far right actually interpreted constitution the way the pounding bothers would’ve wanted it interpreted. Then you have three in the middle that are gonna decide how most votes go. It’s actually a very balanced and unpredictable court.
Did anyone notice that Trump was almost assasinated, and there wasn't a single riot or protest? 🤔🤨 Nobody burned buildings or looted stores.

The center will not hold. All of the institutions have been infiltrated by the left.
The economy is driving our politics. Look to Fortune 500 for relevance, not the political parties who represent commercial interests not the public interest. Political economics is one subject, it can't be divided. Finance and fiat drives the whole system. Commercial interests have always driven US politics in smoke filled rooms or on the golf course.
Wall Street and military industrial complex, deep state (CIA). Literally every politician has connections to those 3 including trump, contrary to popular belief.
