Welcome to follow along as our abandoned farm built in 1872 gets a new life in the serene countryside of Northern Europe, Finland.
I'm here to share my love for old houses, reusing/recycling and calm country life on the mercy of the brutal but beautiful four seasons we have here.
I love to create art in it's many forms, but my heart is in music. You can hear my tunes in the Spotify link down below.

I did it! My first window restoration & Tour in my barn full of vintage building material
I can't believe it's my doing. But here it is, my first restored window! So what you'll be seeing here in this video, is a bunch of firsts. First putty can opened, installing first corner brackets, first time using linseed oil putty, first paint strokes on a window... And a little visit to my favorite shopping center; my barn!
By reading lots of instructions of window restoration from different sources and watching @ gantelius_fonsterhantverk videos on IG (very important step) I grew knowledge. And with knowledge came a hint of confidence. Maybe I could do this after all?
Smarter people would have maybe waited a few years to gain experience until filming it on TH-cam. :D But everyone starts from zero. Sadly all I could find was results from people who have restored several windows before and the quality of their work seemed miles away from where I was standing. That's why I found it hard to believe that my result would be anything like that. Like comparing my awkward dance moves to a professional's. Not encouraging! :D
So I'm hoping this video will be something to relate to for total beginners and gives that confidence you may need to tackle your first project. The learning curve is steep, but the feeling that comes from pulling off a new stunt is so rewarding.
I'll get back to you with a new video very soon!
All the best,
Saaga Helena

Slow days restoring windows & learning clay plaster - Finnish log house renovation
มุมมอง 4.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Hello from the Finnish countryside! On an old house renovation, the unexpected always happens. Our first time doing clay plaster was like a walk in the park; until we got mold. A problem that didn't even cross my mind. Makes me think that if the work ever feels too easy and nice at the plot, something's bound to go wrong. :D At home my window restoration is still in the works. This too became a...

In the last video I said that I have been storing old windows I bought last year in our barn. Well, the time has come to start to repair first one of them, as we need to get the kitchen area sealed for winter and for that we need two windows. I was a little nervous to start to work on these, as I wasn't familiar with any of these products I'm using. Noticing the rot in the bottom of the frame d...

We had so many tasks planned to get finished this summer, but time goes by so quickly and we have no chance of getting them finished anymore befor...

Amazing how you picked up these old skills so quickly and made an amazing result in the process.. It's a lot of work, but it will be so worth it in the end!

My glazing product had multiple warnings (more than usual) regarding the harm it could cause. As usual, Europe is a head of the U.S. in this regard, hopefully!
@@JamMan6string It's crazy to think how much harmful chemicals there is in everything we consume. Some necessary, I bet, but many of them not so much... 🤔
Love to see this finally taking real shape after 3 years... i can 't imagine how disruptive this all has been to your lives. Much strength to see this through, it will be worth it in the end. Much love
Thank you so much. 😍 The rest of the house is still such a mess, but having one room with walls, floor and soon windows will be a damn miracle! Have a great weekend 🤗
Vanha kitti ilman kuumennusta on kyllä tuskaa irrottaa! Voimia irrotteluun! Muuten ikkunaentisöinti on hauskaa puuhaa! T. Pohjatalo/Mona
Olin liian kauhuissani ikkunalasien rikkomisesta, että en tajunnut pelätä erikseen tätä kittienkin irrotusta. 😂 Kohta pitäisi juuri tulla tuo toivon mukaan "hauska" osuus eteen, joten toivotaan parasta! 😁
Kunnon pitsavana kohti työkaluja toimii aina 🤤😅 Totta puhuen, etelän istuintyöläisenä sitä pikkuisen haaveileekin moisista unohdettua lihaksistoa aktivoivista talkooleireistä, jos vaan tahti on semileppoisa (ja on niitä kaloreita ulottuvilla).
@@ilmarinen79 🤣 Pitsavana pistetty korvan taakse tulevaisuuden talkooleirejä ajatellen!
Rivettä vaan rakoihin eikä mitä savivelliä!
Rivettä on raoissa! 😆 Mutta savivelliä tarvitaan tasoittamiseen, jotta voidaan lopulta tehdä savirappaus sisäpinnoille. 😄
🤔 Joskin osa töistä on tarkoitus ulkoistaa. Tupareita tuskin vietetään siltikään tällä vuosikymmenellä.. 😁
I started working on my own windows this spring and not only was the kit really hard in many places.. some of the glasses was glued on the frames... I broke a lot of panes 😅 Sanding was a nightmare because of several layers of paint (not linseed), tree rot that we couldn't replace and rusty hinges and support angles.... I really hope you use the real deal when it comes to new kit, because the loose thing I ended up using was another nightmare to get somewhat clean 😂 So exciting seeing you work with natural and traditional materials! Keep it up and don't let the setbacks get to you ❤ Much love from Norway
@@defectivebunny Oh my, you've really got your share of troubles there too. 😱 I'm so sorry to hear that and I really feel for you! It sucks so hard if every step seems to slap you in the face when you're just trying to live your life. 🤣 Together in spirit, we'll get through this!! 💪🏼😄 Greetings to beautiful Norway! 🏞️
@@saagahelena I belive in both of our projects 💪
Me too, WOO! 🤩🙌🏼
Järnmönja 😆 Great tip on the linseedsoap to remove the paint from the hooks! I wanted to do a wall with clay but I have alot of moisture as well so maybe better in spring time.
Järnmönja saves lives and hooks! Definitely suggest May for this clay task if you can wait. 😅😅
@@saagahelena definitely it can wait because I still have to jack up the frame of the house and probably change some logs. Progress is very slow when I work mostly alone with no budget. 😅
@@savingsiskola I feel you! We are two people with occasional help and it's still tough as hell. I'm praising your work! 😍
@@saagahelena Thank you! ❤️
So interesting that you chose to use clay! I have been reading up on it and was thinking to use it too. We are along way off from that stage yet but I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
I can definitely recommend (I'm sure our mold issue wasn't normal, so don't be afraid to try 😅). It's so nice to work with, especially knowing that it's fully natural. 😍
An IR-lamp is good to remove oild paint and putty without heating the glass!
Oh yes, I will definitely try to buy or borrow that next time! Otherwise there's no way I'll maintain my sanity in the long run repairing seven windows. 😆 They are just so expensive, so that's something to prepare for in advance. 🥶
Linseed oil paint is marvellous and a joy to use but it takes a very long time to dry especially on previously painted surfaces so you need to aim for several dry days if used outside.
@@HowardRice Yes, good point! It took about five days for the corner brackets to dry, even though they were drying indoors. 🥴 It'll be a long waiting game to get all three layers of paint done on the windows in this weather. But it sure is so nice to work with!
@@saagahelena Having said that although it is alarming to see lots of water droplets covering wet paint it still dries eventually but just not such a smooth finish - as I found out this week on a window frame.
@@HowardRice Oh shoot! 😅😅 Well, I try to think that the little imperfections tell that it has been made with human hands and love. And that's something to appreciate in this world where everything is now made by machines to achieve perfection and total symmetry as fast as possible.

Did you need an architect or plans or just do it?
Finland is the promised land of bureaucracy that we often also follow very strictly, so yes indeed. 😄 There was no drawings of this house so we needed them to get a building permit; architect drawings and also electricity and water/sewage/ventilation drawings. Also an official "supervisor" needs to be approved by the municipality for the whole project. But it's not all bad, cause everything we do on the old log frame is considered renovation/maintenance as we're rebuilding it the same way it was, so there's no strict rules of materials etc. On the other hand the little extension that we got planned where there'll be bathroom is considered a newbuild, so there's more rules regarding the materials used. Also, regulations may be different depending on the municipality, so it's all about asking asking asking. 😁
@@saagahelena it's looking great. I wish you all the best in your endeavours. You're making memories.
Thank you so much, any well wishes are needed. 😍 Have a great week!

Your slowness is i think far more realistic for most ppl. Especially if you are doing it yourself and learn along the way.
Yes indeed and I really hope so. 😅 It'll all become a bit quicker hopefully once we get over all these firsts and get to the repetitive part.

Durante el trabajo duro ella sigue sonriendo, una gran mujer

That’s fairly modern construction. I have a house with sand insulation under the floors.
Oh cool! It's nice to have history under the floorboards too. 😍Our floors were also insulated with sand, peat, moss and hay, but sadly we had to remove everything as all the structures were rotten. We didn't have enough moss or hay growing on our yard so it was easier to buy the new insulation online than wait to be self sufficient on that level. 😆
Thankyou for this demonstration/explanation- i had so many questions when watching your videos :) now they are answered.
I'm so glad to hear! My mouth is slower than my brain, so I'm not the best at explaining things, but I'm happy if you found this helpful. 🙏🏼😍 Thank you for watching!
Nicely done, I wanted to insulate our floors since they are wood, but I that only works for a home like yours I think. Open bottom where the wind can blow and take the moisture out. If you have a basement or in an area with lots of moisture doing this would probably be a breading ground for mold and other things. So just as you said though it all depends on where you live, but I think you did a very good job, that shot under the house, it looked fantastic.
Yes it's important that the moisture can get out somehow. If you can't make this sort of system happen, you'll probably get draft free floors with more modern products and with less work, so that's a positive way to think. 😅 And yes, the view from under the house is quite nice, not scary at all like it was before! 🙈
Just a reminder pinned here, that this is not an instruction video of how to build floors, but an example of how we chose to do it and why we chose this method. Regulations, needs and materials vary depending on where you live, so always ask a professional for all the help and guidance. 🙏
Our vapor barrier (paper) is called Aquabar "B" which sounds like Aqua "Barbie" 🤣🤣🤣
Oh no, now the song will be living in my head for the next month! 🤣 Where are you from?
@@saagahelena Haha, sorry about that! I'm in the US and in flooring retail. Solid hardwood floors are the best of course. But vinyl planks took over. And I suppose in Europe also (Adore, One Flor, Polyflor & Aptahls) etc. They are brittle and beginning to fail here, so we are going back to suggesting traditional laminate. (or real wood)
All the way from US. 😍 And yes, hardwood floors are the way to go in my opinion too. 😅
Release your inner child! Love the Disney-esque soundtrack :o) It's perfect.
I love it too! 😍 Thank you 🤍
