Sharpening knives on a belt grinder
In this video I demonstrate how I sharpen knives on my belt grinder. I have changed the way I sharpen multiple time over the years. This is my current process.

Replacing Awning Fabric

I have an awning over my pellet grill, so I can still use the grill when it's raining or snowing. Over the last couple of years the fabric has torn and in this video I am showing the replacement. I am still pretty new to sewing, this video is meant to inspire ideas or actions, it is not meant as a tutorial. Thanks for watching!

    I've been looking for a sharpening jig to get or make for the belt that goes downward, instead of the motor running reverse. Thank you for this, I'm gonna make one for my 2x72 now!

    Good job. 300ish is ok for aluminum, but you want to be 180-220fps for steel, and use some oil during the cut. I'd probably cut off or shroud that long protruding drive shaft just in case anything ever gets wrapped...

    Sweet! Have you tried this with meat? Reason I ask is, the mixer appears to be turning a little too fast for my liking. I'm curious how it works under load. I've been trying to motorize my meat mixer for years. At one time, I considered using my grinder as the driver, but I ended up trying other methods first: Started with an old garage door opener because the chain drive is geared down to just the right RPM, plus I wanted to be able to quickly and easily reverse the rotation, just like I would do if I was doing it by hand. Didn't work because the motor couldn't handle the load, plus those openers aren't designed for prolonged use. I found that out when the large start capacitor exploded! Video of empty mixer trial here: th-cam.com/video/UiOQeElwpjI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JXtSjCJ_EUWhtHD7 Next I tried a treadmill motor. I think that method is doable, but my 3D-printed interface between motor and mixer broke under load. I think I'll try fabbing the interface from aluminum. • @jcfabrications1493
      @jcfabrications1493 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The adapter works great. Originally I had the motor turn the bolt (screw) on the mixer shaft, which didn't have a very good purchase and tightened the screw too much, so I bought a splined shaft from a tractor supply and attached it to the end of the mixer so it slides into the grinder motor; which works great and I can still easily take it apart to clean the mixer. There were some comments early on about the speed, but it has never been an issue for me, this set up works well for what I do.

    You seem like the kind of guy that I naturally gravitate toward. Less production nonsense and more simplicity -- especially when it comes to making good use of what you've got on hand. I see that you've got a lathe in your work shop. Did you buy it in its current form or did you do some sort of similar fab project to make it? Perhaps yours already does this, but I was also wondering if you've ever given any thought to making a vertical/horizontal [convertible] belt sander for metal shaping? I've both liked and subscribed, so please keep on making the informative videos. 👍

    lucky that the saw neck is sufficiently rigid, I done that on a saw of that size and it needed a parellel structure to reinforce the neck beacuse the saw vibrate so badly that the use in that condition would have resulted to the breakage of the teeth on the saw blade or worse, the break of the neck of the saw. very good video.

    Nice work, looks great. I’ve converted a couple to metal saws, Ive found that a good quality blade makes a big difference if fpm isn’t ideal. I like starrett intenss pro die blades.

    Thx for sharing. Just did one myself recently with a DC treadmill motor. Your FPM is a little fast for steel. Most of the published #'s you find online for recommended speeds are for cutting with coolant. Dry, you want to be around 170fpm. If your blade holds up for a while I wouldn't sweat it, but if it seems to eat them quicker than you'd like, try slowing it down a bit.

    Nice job. I picked up a fairly new rigid bandsaw from a guy putting it on the curb. Its the garbage one rigid made with horrible casted parts. Once I finish making steel replacement parts ill be reducing speed with various pulleys. From what I've found porter cable has an exact replacement that can be used for the blade tension and tracking.

    I have an Craftsman wood saw that I want to do the same thing with. I'd like to be able to vary the speed.

    • @jcfabrications1493
      @jcfabrications1493 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought about that too. I was thinking it would be cool to be able to change the speed with a potentiometer controlling the speed of a VFD. This is the way I have my belt grinder set up, but I pretty much only cut wood or steel, and I have a wood bandsaw. Since the build I have cut a lot more plastic and aluminum that I figured I would, so if I did this again, that's probably the route I would go, but this saw works great for steel.

  • @robadams5134
    @robadams5134 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank You and good project. I like the dovetail design for versatility and compact storage. I actually have the wood, leather, knob, metal etc. Only challenge is I have to do the routing with a hand router and simple straight edge/jig etc. I have aluminum bar which should work fine in place of your steel. I think I have the steel but it would be a lot easier to cut aluminum with hand tools.

      Thanks Garnet. The way I built the vise makes getting guns level side to side pretty easy. If I was going to make a vise again, I would add a way to adjust one of the clamps up or down. I think it would be helpful for some gunsmithing operations. I hope yours turns out great!
