I have a Necchi Lydia 3. The take up lever is hitting the machine at lower end when hand turning the balance wheel. Hence cannot complete the turn. Any suggestions to resolve the problem will be appreciated. Also is it "lefty tighty" on this model too?
Greetings! Thanks for viewing, I do appreciate! As to your question, I am not much help. What I would say is keep following the motion of the Take-up lever. I know I am suggesting what you may be doing or already done a few times. I am not familiar with Necchi machines at all! Thanks again and have fun fixing your Necchi.
Hi Jebb! I came across your video, and found it super informative :D but I got myself into a pickle as I broke the check spring :( is it still possible to get one anywhere? I tried one from Amazon but it didn't quite work... The discs are always tight no matter the tension setting. If you could let me know where I can get spring I'd be very much appreciated! Thank you"
Hi there! I bought them at a sewing supply place here in Montreal! My go to place to order stuff is Central Michigan Sewing Supplies in Tustin, Mich. USA. The are widely available and easy to find if you are close to a store. Hope this helps. Good luck with your fun stuff!
Thanks so much for posting this! My throat plate clamps were sticking, and I could not for the life of me get the bottom screw off -- I just got the machine, I didn't realize you have to depress the lever first.
Thanks for viewing! Glad it was useful to you!
Thank you sir cleared the problem.
Thanks for viewing. Glad it helped!
I have always done laundry regularly! This past month I spent over $100.00 in laundry charges due to the 15 used pairs of jeans; plus another 5 new items. The new clothes have to be washed in hot water individually for the first 2 washes! Of course everything has to be well washed as soon as it enters my Inner Sanctum!
Awesome!
Love learning through your experience 😊.
Thank you for putting a smile on my face! Happy thoughts do that! How are things there? Do you sew too? I am speculating that you are an awesome sew-er, lol! Sewing is fun!

Is it possible that the blade of your rotary cutter isnt as sharp as you needed? Also have you tried electrical scissors? They are gems😊
Hi there the power! With the rotary cutter, due to my inexperience, I was cutting through 4 layers of denim! Yikes! It worked better with single layers! Those electrical scissors are wild!
Hi, i really enjoy seeing you learning how to sew step by step. Keep on going you ll be a pro in no time😊
Gosh! I missed this! Thanks! Have fun!
Thank you for this interesting video. It's 3 years since you made this so you may already know that size 14 needles are bigger than you'd normally use for a heavier weight than normal dressmaking cotton. Size 12 needles are commonly used for quilting cotton and size 10 for lighter weight cotton but for very lightweight delicate fabrics you can use a size 9.
Hi jacky! Thanks for the needle info! And thanks for viewing! Have fun! Thanks, Jebb!
3 years i bought my 401a at aution for 15$ and learned how to tear it down /reassemble..... The precision with which that machine operates blew me away. Now i can mend my clothes way better and faster than i could by hand.
Good for you my friend! I love that you paid only $15.00! Good choice! Thanks for watching!
There's two brown handle screw drivers, 4 bobbins, 5 cams, 5 needle plates, 9 presser feet. They can take two needles beside each other. Setting the stitch width adjustment to AK2 for that. AL3 for double needle zig zag.
Good value! Awesome machine! Good job!
I found one of these in working condition with all its accessories (including screw drivers) with a €50 price tag. I put probably another €50 into restoring it and now I use it almost every day.
These are awesome sewing machines! Thanks!
Hi, one little trick I use when doing zippers is to stop part way, such as when you are moving the zipper slider out of the way, and lift the top layer to double check that the zipper is still sitting sandwiched between the two fabrics. There are double sided zipper tapes out there but many of them tend to gum up the needle so it is trial and error with those to find the best one. Also there are glue sticks that are specifically made for fabric as well, which are ok for temporarily helping to hold things in place. Most of the time I am too lazy to put the zipper foot on the machine so another little trick is to leave the regular multipurpose foot on, and use the dial for the needle positions. For zippers set it to left position. I feel for where the zipper teeth are located and put the foot down next to it so it sort of glides along beside it. When you get to the zipper slider, put the needle down so it stays put then lift the foot, move the slider out of the way. Put the foot back down and you are back in business. For top stitching, I prefer the right setting. I hope that helps some. You are doing great!
Good morning Judy MacLean! Thank you for this helpful advice! Putting the needle to the left position is very practical. Great tips! Thank you so much for your help!! I am enjoying learning to sew! Thanks!
@@JebbAdams It is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. Glad I could help.
If you have the other part of the video where I finish assembling everything, please upload it. I am interested in assembling my machine. Comentarios
You'll do great assembling your machine! Enjoy!
Just a little tip: the thread is wrapped around the needle a few extra times. It should just go through the needle from left to right and not be wrapped around the needle. Admiring your patience, you will be a pro in no time!
I want to congratulate you for noticing! Way to go! Thank you for your kind encouragement! I like your channel name! 👍🧵✌️
Hi Jebb. I'm happy that you're finally learning to sew. 🙂 I have found it to be a rewarding hobby. My husband recently bought me a Singer 5560 and I happily use it. I'm learning as well. I've made a handful of zippered pouches and a seat cover. My biggest accomplishment is a uniform skirt for my daughter. I've found that the correct threading of the machine is one of the most important things. I have encountered issues where the thread doesn't stay in the take up lever for some reason. My suspicion is poor thread quality but I am trying to figure that out. I love your videos. Always full of tips. ❤
Thank you so much for your kind comment sandimcp! I wholeheartedly agree it is a wonderful hobby! Chat soon!
the first bird's nest was caused by the foot being still up. ..... when the foot is up, it also releases the thread tension. -- bird's nest inevitable --. after that the complete re-thread and tension adjustment was a good solution to clean it up. numerous stitch issues can be solved by re-threading or changing out to a fresh needle. It is good that you maintain that positive attitude towards learning by the obstacles. .... you will need to keep that approach always. 👍
Thank you for experience & observations! It is less new to me each day! But I see every day and am learning the mistakes first! 👍 But it is enjoyable! Thanks Ed! I appreciate your support!
hi Jebb. ... when you thread past 3, then down to 4 and back up to 5...... at 5 you need to turn the hand wheel until the take-up lever sticks out the top. then it is real easy to hook the thread over it before going back down to the needle area. ... you can't get this part right while the take-up lever is tucked inside the covers. ...... this is what is giving you trouble. ..... cheers, Ed.
Thanks Ed! I am going to try that. Thanks for the tip. Have a great day!
%-)))) THere is Henry Bangsberg with Visetti Super Deluxe Stitch Test having more luck with an old Singer15 clone
Ok, understandable... I would return to the store this soapbox with a motor as fast as possible..
It's no 306K, lol! Or 201. It is fun though!
@@JebbAdams :-)))) Exactly it is not! I presume those start stitching straight after a handcranck turned or an old pedal is pushed down. At least once tuned Singer15 does so.
when you have the free-arm exposed, look at the back of the arm. .... you should find the feed-dog lowering control. ... handy when sewing on buttons or free movement/embroidery sewing.
Thanks for this Ed! My next video does point that out. Thanks for viewing and commenting! It is appreciated!
Actually take #110 (18? I guess ) needle and then start stitching about 6-8 layers of old jeans denim, not only one seam, but cruising around the same area, making folded hems or joining a few pieces as if you are making a messenger's bag to carry heavy stuff inside, at least 5-8kg. of load.
Cool ran2! I have a messenger bag on the list! 👍 I just found this message today, glad I did! Thanks for the tips!
@@JebbAdams For this stuff I ended up with Singer15-89 with a hand crank drive :-/ Even pretty old 1960-70s all metal zigzag machines were useless most of the time,at least the needle frames were bending to the moment it was hurt and scary to watch.
In Eastern Europe/ Eurasia $500USD figure is equal to a double feed walking foot industrial table setup with 750W servo motor. Actually varying from Jack/Typical to local labels branded distribution from China. So quite a good reason to faint when hearing the same prices for a plastic soapbox labeled HD for fun, I guess..
Good point! The Singer HD gears are steel. That is the basis of calling this "personal" or "domestic" machine "Heavy Duty"! I would love to have an industrial "walking foot" machine; but I don't have the knowledge base for that yet! Canvas & denim can be stitched on what I have now! Thanks for your thoughts, your experience!
I immediately request the comparison test with at least Singer15-91 as a base level heavy duty standard!!!1
Hear, hear! Good idea!
@@JebbAdams I have something zig-zag from 1960s vertical shuttle design patterns similar to Singers 200-400 series in mechanics I mean thick top shaft, inherited from Singer15, and still steel bottom shafts and links to the shuttle driver and feed dogs. The maximum size of the needle is #110. Whereas Singer15 is said to be able to fit into #120. :-)
I found one! I am trying to figure it out and it’s grubby looking but I think I can get it shiny and looking new again? About a year ago I was wandering around a secondhand store and I saw it. It works but needs some TLC. I think it’s a gem 💎.
Oh cool! You got one! Awesome! Have fun with it! Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!👍
@@JebbAdamsmine is an EK. Does that matter? It does need a new belt because the one that’s on it now looks a little dried out and cracked so I will order one of those this coming Friday. I also need to figure out how to thread it.
Hello, I just checked my Singer 401 manual. The book states that the machine takes a 15 x 1 needle, size 9, 11, 14, 16, and 18. The machine is also capable of twin needles. I buy Schmetz needles from Walmart. I also buy original Singer needles from the featherweight shop online. I would try these needles before buying a new machine. Especially one that is inferior to the Singer 403. I hope this helps. Kate
Thanks for this solution Kate M! I did try the 16’s on the 503 & another 401 and it fit! I need to check that needle clamp screw. The next video will be all about unpacking my new Heavy Duty Singer! Coming in the next few days! Thank so much! Enjoy your machines!
Thank you so much for this video. I was very frustrated trying to get the machine to work properly. Your video made me realise that I had the needle facing front to back, not left to right. I am happily getting on with it now. Thank you
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this!
You are welcome! Thanks got watching!
In Australia, I have a 4432 which I bought aprox 2 years ago. It is the same grey color as the other HD models, and is indistinguishable from the 4452 - except that the 4452 comes with a larger assortment of feet/accessories which account for the higher price tag. Mechanically and structurally, the 4411, 4423, 4432, and as far as I can tell 4452, are all the same machine, with the significant differences being the number of stitch selection options. How many of those fancy stitches would you anticipate using? ...... is it worth the extra cost to you? 1100 stitches per minute? .... unless you are doing long straight lines, or repetitive production in large volumes, then almost nobody will use that kind of speed. -- IMO --
Greetings Ed! Thank you for sharing your experience with the 4432! I was not able to find anything other than the Singer HD44S Heavy Duty available in Montreal area Walmart's. I did go up to the garment district and there were not any 4452's or 4432's. So I will be learning to sew on the 44S. I will order a Singer Walking foot for the denim and thin leather. This is my first "new" machine purchase. Thanks for the info! Happy sewing!
Tool Tips!
What make and model of machine is this referring to?
This is the Singer 348. The video was posted in October 2023. Thank you for viewing & thanks for your comment. I had put the sewing machine model (Singer 348), in the tags which we all can see. Have fun, keep safe! Regards, Jebb.

Hi I know this comment has nothing to with this sewing machine but, do you think can a video about the 239 singer because I have no clue on how to thread it. Thanks
I wiil my friend in about 3 days! On my way home on a train all day tomorrow! Thanks, I am looking forward to threading & videoing the 239!
Thanks so much! I was having trouble getting the thread in the right place for the thread tension spring. Now I understand. Thanks!
You are so welcome my friend! Thanks for letting me know!
I wish I could see what is happening. Hands are in the way. I will see if you have another video.
Sorry about that! Thank you!
Hello Jebb, I'm very happy to find you after a bit of a fruitless search for any 306K information. I purchased a black version fitted to a 'table like' piece of furniture from a lady in Bradford some six months ago but it's only now I have found time to start restoring it. Having removed the top cover and needle bar cover for inspection, A small black slotted screw fell out onto the table and on looking closer I saw a small thin spring steel plate lying in the bottom of the needle bar area... Its part number is 105015 but I've no idea what or where it is from as no user manuals or adjusters manual was supplied, could you provide a clue? Thanks!
Well heck. I had taken the outer hand wheel off and inspected everything. The washer doesn't slip and the internal threads on the outer hand wheel look ok. I checked the screw, and it wasn't broken and was properly seated. I cleaned off some dirt off of the screw and inside where it sits. Put everything back, and it was still slipping. Then after a few times moving it back and forth it started acting right. So, I don't know what was happening, but if it starts slipping again, I might have to replace something.
Try putting it back to where it was working.
@@JebbAdams I did that the first time, but it was still slipping. After it started working again, I went to the maintenance manual online and it said if the washer is in the way of the screw then rotate it 180 degrees. Maybe the screw was not seated in there if the washer was preventing it from going in all of the way. I am only guessing.
My outer hand wheel does not stop tuning. There is a 'soft stop" if you move it counter-clockwise and clockwise, and it will partially stop the needle from moving. In other words, you can feel it bump where it should stop. Any clues as to what is happening there? I have a 500A. Thanks
That lock washer inside the Handwheel has to 3 lines cut into it. The top or centre mark on the washer has to be at the top of the lock washer when slid into the horizontal arm shaft. But it has to be move slightly to the left of centre. You may have to try moving it a bit before it will unlock & lock correctly. I am not with my machines right now to try it and give a more accurate description. I am on a week holiday so I am unable to be more precise. The machines are at home 350 miles away. It is a bit of trial & error, but you will solve it! Thanks for viewing!
@@JebbAdams You are so sweet for answering on your vacation. I'll take another look at it to make sure it is seated properly. Thank you.
@LouisXIVStreet You’re welcome friend! Thank you!
Does the 306 have any way to adjust the front-back alignment of the needle bar. The needle on my machine is hitting the back of the hole on the throat plate and I'm trying to figure out how to get it back in front. Noticed the problem when I replaced the damaged zigzag plate with a straight stitch plate. The plates fit perfectly with the mounting screws and the feed-dogs. Tried with different new needles, no luck.
I know on the 400 & 500 models that is adjusted under the bed. I have never done it. Get a Singer 306k Adjusters Manual. It explains it well. I wish I could be of more help; but I don't have any experience doing that. I will make a short video in the next few days, showing my 400/500 Manual diagrams. I will get them up sooner, thanks for this great question! Hit the notify icon, that way you'll get a message as soon as I post it, please & !thank you! Talk soon, prolly! Have fun, me too, lol!
@@JebbAdams Thanks. I've got a 298 FashionMaker. Managed to find out it's same/similar to 224 and 306. Can't find a video or Adjuster's or repair manual for any of them nor a store to fix it. So I'm out asking anyone who's done any work with any of these.
@Anon20139 So I checked out singeronline.com. You can buy a singer 306 manual there for $18.99. They have White & other brands manuals also! 👍
@@JebbAdams thanks.
th-cam.com/video/amrMaeDA9gA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=durwyWVmzwhGXU_j I uploaded a video showing the problem. Will it help?

Thanks so much for letting me know that this 306 video helped! Have fun!
The chick spring threw me off. I was always told that it should go in at the 1 o’clock position and moved over to the left into the slot. You are doing it differently and that could be why I’m having trouble with mine. I’m going to try it your way.
Hi Rhonda! So nice to hear from you! Yes I always thought it to be this way! I’m going to check Andy Tube! 👍🙏☮️
@@JebbAdams i’m sure you knew what I meant not chick spring check spring😆

Hi @soneil7745. Thank you for viewing! The "trick" for getting the slide plate back on; is the reverse of the "trick" at 01:50! Jebb Adams removes Singer 201-3 slide plate. Look at the underside of the slide plate. There is a flat spring screwed into the plate. The ends are curved. Those tips slide into the grooves on the machine. Please like, subscribe & watch all the way through, @soneil7745! When you get to the end, please go directly to another bunch of the over 400 Jebb Adams Absolutely Awesome Videos!
