Completely unrelated to anything in this vid but tysm for responding to the Digimon thing in particular! I will say that I don't recommend the whole Digimon franchise, but the reason I'm propagandizing those two tv series in particular and want to write about them is that they occupy this special place alongside One Piece in my heart that low-key saved me from doomerism and helped me cope with depression. They're really different in subject matter and One Piece is a lot more politically and structurally ambitious, but Digimon 1 and 3 are among those rare children's series that are positive and optimistic without being naive about tragedy happening in their worlds and aren't scared to complicate their plot lines and talk about pain, grief, and personal insecurity in ways that respect their audience. There are genuinely interesting overarching plots despite a lot of monster of the week stuff, the characters are all fully realized, and they break my heart in the best way and put it back together. As for the paper itself though, my thesis is that the 90s in Japan saw a lot of upheaval and fear for the future with the asset bubble bursting and a lot of people having their futures ruined, and on a social level, a lot of people went into the new millennium terrified of what it would hold and that things would collapse (super broad generalization), which all coincided with the rise of digital media. And while this isn't all encompassing, a lot of media including anime, esp in genres like cyberpunk and J horror, were either super reflective and philosophical or outright nihilistic about new media and technology. However, Digimon 1 and 3, despite mainly being made to sell toys to kids, had a really interesting (if unintentional) response to that in that they depict a world undergoing a lot of upheavals, and children growing up in these bizarre new digital worlds that are crossing over with reality in honestly kind of insane ways, but they're hopeful and joyous despite it; their overarching message is that even though these new realities can be terrifying and often painful, and we don't know how to confront them, the kids are going to be able to discover who they are in the internet age anyway, find love and friendship, and persevere through it (Digimon 2 also does this but it kinda sucks)

perospero is one of the most hated characters

Kais, you gotta take a gander as to why Baron Tamago and Big Mom's crew might have figured everything out so quickly, and try and remember if you've seen someone like Chiffon (Bege's wife) before and where you might have seen her (Hint = It's a pre timeskip arc). The Soul Soul fruit has super interesting implications that get fleshed out further into the arc, but Big Mom's power literally slowly destroying the lives of the people who live under her is such a good metaphor for how hollow and brutal her reign actually is Also, fun fact: Perospero and his "Perorin" catchphrase are based on the Japanese onomatopoeia for licking ("peropero").

Also Oda bringing back Bege for this arc was sooooo smart. There are some people in the OP Community who are highly critical of WCI Arc for reasons we can discuss once you finish (maybe you will share their opinion), BUT WCI Arc embodies one of OP's biggest themes; family. What it means, who it includes, blood-related vs deep emotional connections are some examples of sociological and existential questions Oda explores. Can't wait to discuss the Arc with you once you finish it around what episode 890 or sum like that 😅

Rewatching this even tho I watched the patreon upload already 🤝🙏 Mama and Caesars dynamic in this arc is too funny. Also HOW is Oda gonna make me feel bad for him after what he did to all those kids in Punk Hazard???!!

He is not a loving king either. Like in Doffy's case (see Human Auction House in Sabaody), the World Government knows about Germa's criminal side, but choose to ignore it because it fits their interests. Judge is often invited to the Reverie since there's often an advancement in his kingdom or they are involved in some incident. In episode 794 the soldiers also mention Judge by his epithet "Garuda" which translates to "mythical king bird" since that is the name of the First Bird in Hindi mythology.

Some info on Brûlée: Her name is based on Crème brûlée, a dessert made of custard topped with hard caramel, which follows the food themed names of the Charlotte Family and Big Mom Pirates. Brûlée shares a fairy tale theme with the Big Mom Pirates: Brûlée's general design and personality appear to be based on the Evil Queen character from the fairy tale "Snow White". This follows the general fairy tale theme of the Big Mom Pirates and the Charlotte Family: - Both characters are shown to be envious of the beauty of younger women. - In the original tale, the Evil Queen is known to disguise herself several times in order to trick the titular Snow White into killing herself. Brûlée follows a similar tactic, using her Devil Fruit ability to disguise herself in order to trick enemies. - The Evil Queen also speaks to a magic mirror, which Brûlée's Devil Fruit power may be a reference to. Brûlée's appearance in a torn wedding dress may also be in reference to Miss Havisham, a twisted female character from the Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations. Story wise: (As I have mentioned before) the girls of the Charlotte family are used as bargaining chips to be married off and increase the power of the Yonko Big Mom. But because Brûlée got scarred in a pretty young age, she can't get married (There's a pretty common trope in anime/manga that if you scar a woman's face, she won't be able to get married. It's sad how true this is irl too. This belief is also in a later scene concerning the Germa). This made her develop a complex with marriage which is why she is wearing a wedding dress (as a means to console herself, maybe). Also, Brûlée is stationed at the outskirts of Whole Cake Island, treated like an outcast by her mother, the Queen of this land. Brûlée is not the only Charlotte sibling to have a complex concerning weddings and marriage. We have already met [redacted] who is obsessed with getting married and proposes to every strong and/or good looking male she meets. Then we have all those girls who trained hard to become strong fighters so they wouldn't be forced to be married to strangers. And then we have all the Charlotte sons: Generally boys may not think about marriage and stuff, but they are not allowed to date nor make a family of their own. All the Charlotte brothers are allowed to do is be strong soldiers for their mother's sake. There are a few more things about Brûlée but are spoilers for now.

I prefer to have it in Dub! I enjoy it much more in English, and some of the voices are WAY better that way (like the main character, Momonga)

You are a kind empathetic soul.. this is heavy.. and sanji's story hits extra hard cause it's the truth for so many kids in real world too isn't it.. every kid deserves to be protected and cared for but unfortunately sometimes people who are supposed to protect them break them the most.. it will get worse a little.. but it's okay.. among all the traumatic backstories sanji's story for some reason hits me the most.. i find his story a success.. a success story of his resilience and braveness from such a young age.. and everything he had gone through he never lost himself.. he always stayed kind.. for me this character is strong more than just the physical aspect 😊
