From someone who loves baking I would suggest that the lard\butter either be mixed with the sugar and eggs before adding the liquid ingredients, it will make it easier to mix into the ingredients, another option is to mix the lard/butter into the flour mixture to form a crumble like texture before adding the egg mixture to it.
