Never happier than when I'm riding figure of eights outside my house, on a Friday group ride, or riding somewhere to camp, fish, swim, cook, read, or otherwise just chill.
17. Toby and Tea, casting and brewing - by bike
It's been a wet old week here, so glad to be out in a break in the rain. I pack up the Surly Staggler with some fishing stuff, and my Optimus 8R stove - which has had a bit of a fettle to get it going again.

Mum suffers from a badly damaged tibial nerve after a ganglion cyst removal. She agreed to go on a hike, and thought we were taking a wide and flat tramway to Waitawheta Hut. Instead we take the Waitengaue track with 20 stream crossings and 500m of elevation gain. We spend the night in a deserted hut, before heading back down. No narrative in this one, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to @MickTur...

Love the stove! What is it?
That’s an Optimus 8R!
@@eatrideselfrealiserepeat Didn't think I needed another stove but here we are. Nice vid
This is the “ultralight” model… With nesting mess kit… www.ebay.co.uk/itm/395544654018?
@@eatrideselfrealiserepeat Will keep an eye out for one in the UK. Thanks!
I can't cast left handed. I always switch the crank arm to the other side when I buy a new reel.
I write and throw left, swing and bat right, have never considered which way I cast though!
Nice trip. I always bring a buff/neck gaiter, it's great for keeping the sun out when the sunrise is to early in the tent (and multi use too).
Thank you! Yeah they’re the greatest.
Nice little adventure
Thank you!
Oh wow your stuff looks great. I used to live in the new forest, I’m queueing that vid now.
Your content is great. I visited NZ in 2019 and cant wait to come back some day.
Thank you so much! Yes, very lucky to be where I am - and I feel wanderlust when I watch videos from other parts of the world. Part of the challenge is being grateful for what I have ‘on my doorstep’. 🤙
hey dude, i got the same bike and am planning to do some bikepacking trips with it too. One question, what exactly did u buy and mount to change the hover bar to a normal one? And is the bar then the same height as it would be on a normal bike? And did u change it so u can mount ur bags better on the bar or is it for u comfier than the hover bar? Would be super nice and helpful if u could answer my questions :) Searched a lot in the internet about changing the hover bar but never really got to an answer what exactly u have to buy an if it is then the same as on a normal gravel. Lg Simon
Absolutely! I have been on a journey. I’m 181cm and am usually comfortable on a 56cm top tube frame with a longish stem. My Canyon is a Large frame, but I felt too high in the front and too short in the front on it. For example, my Canyon had: Reach 423 + Stem 90 (hover) + Bar 70 (hover) = Total 583 “front reach+” Vs. a fixie of mine: Reach 402 + Stem 130 + Bar 80 = Total 612 Or another gravel bike: Reach 397 + Stem 130 + Bar 71 + Total 598 I went through a few parts to get where I’m really happy. The Canyon fork is cut at an angle for the hoverbar integrated stem set up. Which means there isn’t much steerer tube for a “normal” stem to hold onto. My final setup (which I love) is, from the bottom up) Canyon Grail Large Standard Grail fork Slam That Stem 1 1/4” headset bearing cover 10mm spacer Canyon V13 100mm stem (‘upside down’) 5mm spacer Kapz 1 1/4” top cap Ritchey WCS Beacon 40cm handlebar. I also make sure the steerer tube and stem are spotless clean and dry to make sure they hold well. Because of the angled steerer tube the stem struggles to hold onto it. I am considering a Ritchey Superlogic C260 1 1/4” stem - the 3 bolt steerer tube end looks promising. Hope this helps, please ask more questions if you want! I ended up at: Reach 423 + Stem 100 + Bar 80 = Total 603 And probably my hands being 25mm lower when on the hoods. But if I park the Canyon beside a road or gravel bike, my hoods are the same height.
That lantern is so cute, I really want one! 🥲
It’s so twee! It has a specification of 32g/h burn rate of fuel. But I wonder if that’s at maximum power? I should do some testing!
Looks fun and cold! You forgot to thank your wife for holding down the fort while you went out for the night! 😊
You are completely right! Thank you Laura. And… there is a chance she relishes the times I leave her and the kids with a season of Ru Paul to catch up on 😂🌈💪
Bedisloe , Plunket , Mac Farlane . kind camp site owners too , love the music choice .
Thanks Mum! Yeah I got lucky with the camping spot 🏕️ 🔥

I'm jealous! The shortest day of the year here in Ohio is 2°C on average.
Oh wow! That is proper cold. Well. On your shortest day it’ll be our longest and probably 25°c and sunny - so you know where to escape to ;)
Cool first pub. Beer looked really cooling too. Liked the look of the church pub too. A nice relaxing bike riding day!
Yeah I’m surprised I have been before 😂
Cool vid, cool ride, bike and bus too!
I did a rad little velodrome to velodrome bus/bike work commute this week. Stoked on that bus.
@probablyriding has brought me here. Thanks for the beautiful 10min-escape from reality 😊
Thank you for visiting my world 😊
Nice to see you
Aayyyyyyyeee! Thanks Mum 😊😊😊

Such a fun way to spend the day! ❤❤❤
AB-SO-LUTE-LY! Somewhere in Tennessee sounds dreamy too fwiw
Primo!!!! I would have enjoyed that ride and pub visit. Maybe next time.
Absolutely. I am happy with my reconnoitre, we should proceed.
Very nice video! Cool brewery and beers!
Thank you! Was a cool spot to visit.
We just had our summer solstice here in the US. Sunscreen and hydration are top priorities when riding for us right now!
That’s one of the things I really enjoy about this space - it’s summer there, winter here, different days on the bike. Gives me a break from the season I’m in!
Never seen anywhere look more like England than New Zealand! Really enjoy your vids and glad I found them after checking out PR vids.
Yeah I lived in Hampshire for a bit and this little rural part of NZ I am in isn’t dissimilar! Thank you for the kind comments 💪💪💪

Very nice videos!
that’s very kind, and much appreciated!
Oh my, steamroller, flat fix, bikerack on the bus, velodrome near home… talking about quality of life! ❤ awesome little video!
I know… it’s a truly charmed life for which I am absurdly grateful. I’ll find you a couple of Olympic track cyclists who just bang around town when they’re not tearing up the boards.
Hey, another Kiwi cycling channel! Kia ora e hoa! I've been thinking of starting one up, this is great encouragememt! Out of curiosity, what's your gear ratio? Mine's 45:17, relatively low so I can hit Welly's hills.
E kare! I was just in Pōneke for mahi today! this is my spinning is winning bike - 46:20, but also 46:17 when I just want a little more range. I’m going to subscribe and wait for some wet, windy, Welly hills.
Probably Riding is my favorite TH-camr! So glad to see that others enjoy his content and I LOVE that you do these style of videos. ❤❤❤ It’s fun to come along on these rides with you guys!
isn’t he brilliant?! yes: I love copying his style and I enjoy the freedom of just filming and riding, knowing I can narrate it later! thank you!!!
A very delicious looking pit stop.
10/10, can recommend, will go back.
Mission accomplished! Bike rack on a bus is insane. So cool to have that!
honestly. you do feel a precariousness, there’s a spring loaded front wheel grabbed and that’s it - but yes! very cool, opens up commuting options “oh I’ll just ride to the office from this stop” 🙌🙌🙌 thank you for your videos brother!!!
this is the type of calm cycling content i’ve been looking for
🧘 thank you 🧘
A very calm and enjoyable video! Im glad you were recommended. How did you go about re painting your bike? I am looking to do the same to a steel bike like yours.
thank you! calm is a vibe I’m chuffed about. I had a bit of a moose painting the bike, I read a lot of automotive refinishing advice and essentially rubbed it down to make a ‘key’, painted it base white*, flicked it and clear coated it. *The base white I used cracked around the head tube, bottom bracket, so it looks a bit old school!
That was an excellent video. Much goodness.
yay! thanks!
I like bike
thank you!
Great video. I just found @probablyriding as well and am binge-watching. Now, I'll be binge-watching your channel. I just subscribed.
Thanks for sharing your ride with us. Nice bike!
thank you!! yeah I am stoked with how that project came out
hi I'm new subscriber ❤ i wish , I have a fixie too , today is my birthday 🎉
happy birthday! thanks for subscribing 🤙
Did you have a bike build channel as well or do all us kiwis sound the same ?😂
haha! ubiquitous vowel shift! no bike build channel sadly
This video was really well made, very enjoyable to watch!
thank you so much!!!!!!
I am scratching my head as to how you managed to remove the tube and put back in while the wheel is still on the bike?
well I was puzzled as to if it would work too! but pop a bead pull the tube try not to mangle it in the chain/cog like I did… thank you for watching and commenting!
@@eatrideselfrealiserepeat YT recommended your channel since I follow probablyriding channel. I know it was a hack, but still It would be nice if you could make a tutorial video on how you did that! Thanks again! Love your channel too!

❤the rice risotto looked yummy . Great price too . Loved the sound of you riding through the autumn leaves too x
Those risotto cakes were my fave to make, so stoked to eat one, great value!
Honestly, I was only waiting for the white doggy to appear 😎
I even got in trouble from my daughters for it taking so long for the bike guard dog to appear too!!!
Loved the rest of this video. Bikes, coffee, dogs, llamas and I've never seen a man eating a persimmon whilst riding a bike before. I'll make sure to do that when persimmon season starts in Korea. Congrats on the clean box club. Excellent video!
I saw this video and thought, "this looks similar to a probablyriding video". And here we are!
Only just saw this mention! Thanks for the homage. Going to check out the rest of the video when I get home from work.
oh you are most welcome: thank you for your *beautiful* channel.
