Depersonalization - Official January Update
Depersonalization was released in August 2024 for PC. Developed by MeowNature and published by Gamera Games.
One of my favorite games from 2024, Depersonalization has a major addition with the "Cursenday's Black Carnival" module getting a full translation instead of the machine translation used prior.
Another major addition is the inclusion of crowd and community modules being selectable in the newly adjusted Module selection menu.
I give a brief breakdown of the update and my impressions.
Here's my review if you want more details on the game and my impressions based on the official release:

Depersonalization was released in August 2024 for PC. Developed by MeowNature and published by Gamera Games. One of my favorite games from 2024, Depersonalization is a turn-based RPG heavily inspired by Call of Cthulhu, the use of self-contained story modules and a non-standard character growth system allows plenty of variety to keep you interested throughout the experience. The good games of 2024 just keep coming!
Good review. I like the game. It’s worth the play.
Thank you and agreed!
Thank you for reviewing the game! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I couldn't find many videos about this game, especially in English, so I'm happy someone covered it. I'm not sure if you've tried it yet, but there's an alternative route in the game with some different boss fights if certain conditions are met. When you're playing as the Mui and need to "switch," you have to complete the following stages without dying or switching to another Mui.
Thanks for recommending it! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but the story really took me by surprise. It gave me kind of the opposite opinion of Slitterhead that I thought had a lot of good ideas but felt like it lacked in depth despite how many mechanics were involved and how it handled its story. I figured there was something about the Mui sections since the deaths seemed too convenient but I also wanted to make sure I didn't lag on this review. I'll definitely try to see the other route. Thanks again!
Nice review, im thinkin of gettting it too. You should check out "metal ape" its a short but cheap platformer with v nice art
Appreciate how in depth this review was, shame about the game, was looking forward to it
Thank you! Yeah, it nailed the visuals and that's about it. I was really disappointed.
Great review. Really well made video covering all the points
@@zevzero Thank you! I hope it's still accurate as the game has been out for a few months now.
I like your reviews and video editing, keep up the good work!
@real_bruceu Thank you! It's great to hear that.
Lots of interesting 2D pixel games with Souls-like vibes have been coming out lately, and they're all pretty great. I find them more exciting than a lot of the indie 3D counterparts. I'll add this one to my list. Rubinite is another one I'm excited about.
@TheBlueDash TBH, I'm usually pretty iffy of games with a soulslike tag because that just seems like it gets conflated with games that have any kind of difficulty. I'm glad I played Fountains because it is more of an action adventure title than what I thought it would be but I'd be lying if I didn't admit the pixel art didn't grab my attention. I've added Rubinite to my Steam wishlist but I think I'm more interested in Alabaster Dawn and Sacrifire.
@randomfriendlygamerRFG I havent really been super interested in souls like either. But what I meant was the ones I was interested in were the 2D ones! 3D ones feels like they are crowding the market a bit.
@TheBlueDash Sorry, I mostly agree with that, I just kind of wanted to point out other games similar that might be released in 2025.
@@randomfriendlygamerRFG For sure!
TNX ❤
@@arkaarka2628 No problem!
Do you accept any review quests? I think you would really enjoy ADEN, it's a super surreal game with fairly challenging gameplay. It came out like 2 weeks ago maybe?
Thanks for the recommendation! I just checked the Steam page and it looks interesting so I'll check it out after uploading my next review.
@@randomfriendlygamerRFG Neat! I can't wait for it. I really love that you review stuff that many people don't. I first discovered you through your Illusion Carnival review for example. Great game.
I love the soundtrack
It was a great soundtrack and was even nominated for Best Soundtrack for the Golden Joystick Awards.
@ nice
It’s lovely to see a good gameplay mechanic summary for my game done in a nice video format. You did a good job.
Thank you! I appreciate it and thank you for making an amazing game!
Magenta Horizon released 2 weeks ago and none of my other influencers warned me about it? That's outrageous! I'm so glad I subscribed to this channel <3
@alessandroferrucci6087 This never even showed up on my Steam "Explore Your Queue" lists. Someone just gave me a Steam Key and it looked like something I'd be into, so I checked it out. Well worth it and I ended up buying the soundtrack to show my support.
Keep good working (yeah awful game with 3:30 hour long)
@bokarshz It's a shame. They nailed the look, and that's about it.
@randomfriendlygamerRFG yeah only good music and animation cutsences
@randomfriendlygamerRFG shame to this utuber (dhani infinity) give it a great score and tell lies like 10 hour game length.
@bokarshz There are some other questionable reviews on the Steam page. Some positive reviews I understand because some people didn't finish the game when they wrote the review, but some of the others that I've just read look really dishonest.
@@randomfriendlygamerRFG they are from family devs and free codes for utubers.
No excuses for lazy translation, especially when we have AI like ChatGPT
It's been a few months since I've reviewed the game, but besides some of the awkward translations I don't remember anything being egregiously bad and nothing that kept me from completing the game.
Thanks!! Good review! Alot of info I needed.
@@vvclife No problem!
Good review although i found the game too slow to be enjoyable. It was very pretty though and a part of the profit goes to whale and dolphin conservation charities so it gets a thumbs up from me
It is pretty slow moving. I think I just got used to it early on. Thanks for reminding me that part of the profit goes to charity!
Another one that looks like my kind of game. You seem to have an eye for interesting games that fly under the radar.
Looks like this one is right up my alley. Love the art style and I'm a huge sucker for a solid metroidvania.
@patrickowens4294 I think the recent patch made a bunch of QoL and other updates, but besides what faults I mentioned in my review, I really did enjoy it.
Its a solid game
A lot of cool ideas in this game. It definitely seems like it's trying new things, which is always good. Thanks for the breakdown.
@patrickowens4294 I think if this was at a lower price, I would be more encouraging for people to try it out.
the envirenement is very atmspheric . its grey decaying and gloomy. fitting for a post apocaluptic survival. the combined camera angle of old resi games with the movement of modern resis. its seems like the controls are stiff but it gives you the sense of disempowernment.
@hcohic9884 If the controls are stiff, it may be because I used Steam's controller configuration input since I haven't used M&K for gaming in a long time.
blaz bluelooks like a cyberpunk anime stylized 2d fighting game mixed with roguelike elements in a metroidvenia map. im not sure about the longevity and depth of gameplay mechanics but from a concept and visual aesthetics alone this looks worth trying.
@hcohic9884 I think its weakest aspect right now is that its main roguelike mode, Mind Training, feels like it goes through certain preset stage designs until the final level that does feel much more randomized. There's supposed to be a pretty big update at the end of the month but I don't think it'll address that.
what were playing on
@jasonotaku4974 PC with an I9 CPU, 4070ti GPU and 32 GB of memory.
the game looks amazing it may seem like hollow night but that just the environment keep up the good work
Hollow 'night'?
Thanks for the feedback!
thats just straith up hollow knight
@@the_battle_medic Depends on what aspects of Hollow Knight you're comparing.
So its just hollow knight with extra steps?
I'm not sure what you mean by extra steps. It kind of feels a bit more simplified to me in other aspects of the game.
I'm getting this game eventually at surface level it looks similar to hollow knight which I liked playing but it's mechanics are promising for a good time
It's got a lot going for it and I think you'll find a lot to like after playing.
Yeah it was pretty cpu bottlenecked for me, idk
@Craptacular1116 Oof! That sucks! I had some bad moments, but overall, it was working pretty well for me.
dude i need to get a pc i tried to play the beta on xbox and it was 30fps dipping to 20fps it was awful
@habibprout9201 Was there no performance mode option on console? And just to be honest I had some performance issues on PC too but I was also playing on 4K settings the entire time.
This looks sick
I had a lot of fun with it. It's still got some issues to sort out, but it's not out til next year but I'm looking forward to it.
Good review, totally accidentally stumbled upon your video btw
@back2ukraine1 Hahaha! I don't mind if it's by accident! Glad to see you appreciated it!
Very good video. I wonder why you only have 31 Subs. Hope your Channel growths
@michaililiev3635 Thanks for the compliment! I'm hoping to be able to put out more content on a regular basis to help grow a bit, but I also like to make my playthrough of games I review pretty thorough so that takes a bit more time. Thanks again!
@@randomfriendlygamerRFGthat’s the way to go about it - quality over quantity!
On an initial look, sure, the anime style seems odd, but then considering that Call of Cthulhu is just more popular than Dungeons & Dragons in Japan, it kinda makes sense
@epimetrius7348 Just to clarify, the studio who made Depersonalization is Chinese, and I'm not as familiar with the popularity of Table Top RPGs in China but I think the anime style of artwork has been adapted by various animation studios outside of Japan so it could also just be due to overall popularjty.
@@randomfriendlygamerRFG just picked up the demo, and I noticed. Mistake on my part. I actually don't know which RPGs are popular in China.
Interesting. My computer is a potato, but I think I would enjoy it!
It's not a demanding game in terms of performance if that gives you any worry.

Hello Random Friendly Gamer! I've seen your review of SymbioPhobiA and I love how you've been able to analyze and appreciate every detail of the game. I would have liked the length of the game to be longer but I lost a lot of time with technical problems. I was also delighted that you included the detail of the Steam Input in the review, it is very useful. Thank you for your honest and constructive analysis! 😄
Hello! Thank you for checking it out! In general, I was really impressed with what you were able to accomplish. And yes, I mentioned the Steam page for your review because I wanted people to see your statement on what your main priorities were for this chapter of the game. I look forward to anything you have planned in the future and wish you the best of luck!
Excellent video.. Really informative and very well put together. I enjoyed watching this very much... Thank you RFG.
Thank you! I appreciate the comment.
Looks like silent hill
It's very similar to the early Silent Hill games. VERY similar even to how it plays.
Chinese Sekiro But in all honesty, might actually play the game
I think there's enough differences to hold its own identity and there's a good amount of game here despite it being pretty linear. At the very least I'd say it's worth the price.
Nice 👍
👍
It seems really difficult to keep track of the targeting reticle. I think Cleared Hot and Reflex Unit : Strike Ops seeem to do it a lot better.
I think there might be an option that was later added in the menu that might have made this adjustable but I'm not 100% sure. I also played the game strictly on controller, so I think it was easier for me to manage where the reticle was even though I did have trouble from time to time. Have you been able to play Cleared Hot and Reflex Unit? I didn't see a release date or demo available.
Reflex yes played the demo, cleared hot seems way smoother, jet attack is great too demo with 50 jets. Try it
Good short 👍
