Watercolour Plein Air Painting | What’s in My Backpack?
มุมมอง 6489 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hi there! Today I thought I’d do a “what’s in my plein air bag video.” I could make this short and sweet and tell you “I have too much in my bag.” I weighed it this morning and it came to a whopping 20lbs! So if you ever wondered about why I’m huffing and puffing in my vlogs you now know the reason why. As I go through my bag I will chat a little bit about why I do go heavier with certain gear ...

The moment I saw the binder ring I knew this would be *the storage hack* for me! Genius!
It actually looks good 👍
Thank you. This little guy escaped my compulsion to overpaint. I have some others that weren’t so lucky 😂
Oh wow that painting is beautiful, you're very talented!
Thank you, this is a new medium for me so I appreciate the encouragement.
i think it came out good!
Thank you ☺️
This is something I'd see in my dreams, but slightly distorted, so it's pretty darn good
Thank you. I think your description “something I’d see in my dreams but slightly distorted,” captures the mood perfectly.
This is the best idea I have seen for storing paint tubes if you are going somewhere. I go to an art group each week and have just dumped all my tubes of watercolour into a clear top storage bag. Not good if you want to find something. Thanks for this.
@@katieragg7336 Thank you for the feedback. I’ve tried different ways of organizing my paint tubes and this is the method that I have stuck with.
I love it... I love to paint water and this is soothing..
@@miracleufodiama1453 Thank you. Water and reflections are so much fun to paint!
wow that painting is beautiful
Thank you, that’s encouraging ☺️
Absolutely GORGEOUS ✨ Masterpiece!!! ✨
Thank you.
What are you thanking me? It’s your hardworking that paid off! Good job, yet again!!
Watercolourist… beautiful. That’s my new name for them now!!
Great video❤😊
Thanks for watching😊
👌👌
Thank you:)
Beautiful location and paintings!
Thanks. It’s a very pretty spot, especially with the leaves turning.
Awesome that hubby is so supportive of your adventures.
Yes, he’s very supportive and knows all the best spots for plein air.
Genius!
Thanks for watching!
How do you prevent your brushes from hitting the top of the paintbrush caddy and bending the bristles?
Hi. My brush caddy is adjustable so the brush ends have plenty of room. As long as the brush caddy and packing cube are upright in my bag I’ve never had an issue.
Fantastic idea and thank you so much, I am going to buy the necessary materials today!
That’s great, enjoy!☺️
Great idea. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching.
I like what you have going!! Gallery ready ✨️
Thanks Cedric. I always get nervous when I have to sign a painting but it’s rewarding to see it matted and framed.
@@samanthareimerart4627 I agree! Thank you 👍🏾👍🏾
You have a bottle of clean drinking water or your backpack, now take a piece of rope and make a large loop and put it over the tripod at the top, now suspend it just off the ground with the rope. What ever you choose remember that you must not let it touch the ground. This will hold down your tripod against the wind. An old photography trick.
Yes, that’s a great way to prevent mishaps. The tripod in the video is from my landscape photography setup and has a hook underneath that I hang my bag from.
Great video 🎨
Thanks so much!
You're quite welcome
Good information on tripod investment 3:26
Thanks Cedric. I always tell people to go as big/heavy duty as they can manage for the tripod because your easel is only as good as it’s base of support. No flimsy tripods! 😂
@@samanthareimerart4627 agreed 👍🏾
Beautiful. . .❤❤
Thank you!
Brilliant! Love this
Thank you Linda!😊
That's beautiful ❤ keep up the amazing work😊😊
Thanks so much ☺️
Nice set-up.
Thank you ☺️
It's so nice seeing this video! I'm one of those people who get bored of particular minimalist set of colours extremely easily. Sure, I'm mixing a lot as well, but... with a very limited palette, you can only get a few particular shades, of, say, orange. And mixing until you get the right one is also time consuming. I love playing with pigments! I always want more 😅
I like to switch between this and my smaller palette but this is the setup I still use the most. You’re right, it is fun to play and experiment with a broad range of colours. I find the Daniel Smith paints have a lot of variety in terms of granulation and transparency too so it’s fun to mix it up.
@@samanthareimerart4627 Yes, I love a minimalist setup as well, but more like a challenge or just to mix things up for fun. My main palette is packed with different pigments which I enjoy a lot! Daniel Smith paints are wonderful, I own several small tubes - sadly they are quite costly here in Germany. But I can absolutely recommend our local brand Schmincke which is really. really good. I also love the Polish brand Roman Szmal - their colours are so exquisite! I also really enjoy your channel, your paintings are beautiful <3
@@k.b.1996 Thanks so much watching and for the kind comment! I have a couple of sets of Schmincke but haven’t tried the Roman Szmal you mentioned. I will put it on my list of paints to try:)
Hi...here Argentina. Where are you? Nice place and work.
Canada, thanks!
Hi! I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying your watercolor plein air videos. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Laura, welcome!! Thanks for the kind comment, the plein air vlogs are a lot of fun to make.
I LOVE watching you work!
Thank you Sheila! We need to plan a day out this spring:)
Great video, as always! You splayed the brushes of your dagger brush.. I've never seen that before. Thanks for that tip! -- Julie
Julie! Thanks so much. The splayed dagger bristles works great for grasses too, it’s such a handy brush to have.
I like your painting!
Thanks so much!
I agree!! Any day you get out and paint plein air is a win. Especially when it’s in such a beautiful place!
For sure. Painting en plein air is always time well spent:)
Def gonna give this a go...thank you for a genius hack.
It’s been fun to see people’s take on it, let me know what you think. Thank you for watching!
Beautiful place! Waterfalls are gorgeous but quite hard to paint! Sorry you had to cut your time short.
You’re right, I find waterfalls really challenging to paint. I definitely would have liked more time there, can’t wait to go back.
@@samanthareimerart4627 I'm challenged in everything but especially fall colors in the hills.
@@dojodance Same. I get very excited for the fall colours and sometimes find it hard to do them justice. The colours are just starting here and I’m planning to get out and make some more art vlogs soon. I think you’ve given me a good idea for video🤔
Love these little palettes. Just what I was looking for. I also really like the colors you picked out.
Thank you. I’ve really been enjoying this ‘fun sized’ palette. It goes everywhere with me.
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! Planning another plein air video for this week, if the weather is on my side.
Great idea Samantha. Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Excellent idea! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Up till now I've been using clothes pegs glued to a wooden board but your idea is much better.
@@smokeyjoe2354Gluing the clothes pegs to a board would work well, and keep the paints from dumping on the floor.
Lol I cracked up at the ultramarine comment. I have it in my studio palette but I don’t on my travel palette. It just seems to be so overwhelming. I subbed. Love your outdoor adventures.
Thank you for the kind comment and Welcome! LOL Ultramarine Blue is a staple, and for good reason I suppose but I don’t reach for it as much these days. I wasn’t brave enough to leave it off this palette, maybe next time I will be feeling more reckless 😆
What a beautiful place to paint! I've heard that using vodka instead of water keeps the paint from freezing, or using those instant hand warmers under your water pot and palette helps. I wouldn't know, I don't mind the cold but I'm not intrepid enough to paint outside :) 🥶
I’ve tried vodka in a water brush and it worked to a point. I wish I’d had a water brush on this day because just the warmth of your hand is often enough to keep things flowing. I knew I had made a fatal error when I had put too much water on my palette. The learning curve is steep painting en plein air in the winter LOL😁
It’s always a good day when get out and paint en plein air😊 The process is my favourite part, and if the result is a study that just needs an additional wash or it inspires a new piece that is a bonus. Thanks so much for watching and to everyone that has subscribed and taken time to like and comment on videos. Much appreciated! Happy Painting!
Such a loose and beautiful rendering of a very majestic animal, great job!
Thank you very much!
Hi Samantha- what do you recommend for a newer watercolor student? Should I try tubes or continue to use ready made pans?
Hi Vanessa. I found pans very useful when I started. Once I figured out what I liked to use on my palette, I switched to tubes but still tend to put them in pans or welled palettes. Tubes are usually more economical in the long run and it is really nice to work with fresh paint when I can. For a newer student that wants to try tubes, a nice mixing trio is a good place to start, ex. Hansa Yellow Medium, Alizarin Crimson and Cobalt Blue.
Thank you! Do you have a certain brand you like for ones already in a pan?
@@vanessacastagnoli1126 I’ve had good luck with Daniel Smith. I think they make individual 1/2 pans you can buy. They make a couple of good 1/2 pan sets that are a great start to building out a palette. The one is the Sketcher Set of 6 and the other is called the Ultimate 15 set. The Sketcher 6 is nice because it comes in a palette with empty pans so you can add your own. Another good option is buy the Daniel Smith Watercolor sticks and you can cut off chunks and put them in a pan. The watercolor sticks are very good value. You get the same amount of paint as a 15ml tube for less $$.
I had a lot of fun making this palette. What are your favourite colours for a primary mixing trio? Thanks so much for watching and to everyone that has subscribed and taken to the time to like and comment on videos. Much appreciated! Plein air vlogs coming soon.
What kind of pen is that? Looks comfy to use.
The pen is a Carrot Oblique dip pen by Tom’s Studio. Yes, it’s very comfortable in the hand. The wider grip prevents the dreaded writer’s claw.
Wow, your calligraphy handwriting is absolutely gorgeous and flawless!! Thank you for this lovely review, I've been on the fence about this ink but you've convinced me. Happy new year!
Thank you so much for the kind comment. I just recently pulled “Song of Scarlet” out for a project and it is still my favourite Ferris Wheel Press ink from 2023.
Well done. Although I paint regularly in the winter, I don't paint in quite those conditions here in the UK. I look forward to seeing more of your paintings.
Thank you so much! We’ve just had two days of rain and lost all of our snow. It’s going to be a real mixed bag of weather this winter but it should make for some interesting plein air outings.
Now that is something I have never seen before. Freezing paints and brushes! You are an intrepid artist!
I’ve painted in colder temps but I made an error putting too much water on my palette early on and standing in the shade. Next time I will be sure to not forget my water brushes and have warmer water in my thermos😁
