Light Phone 3: $800 of DIGITAL MINIMALISM?!
The Light Phone 3: Minimalism or Madness? 🤔
The Light Phone 3 is here-or almost here-and it’s stirring up some big questions about the future of digital minimalism. In this video, I take a deep dive into the latest offering from Light, a company known for challenging the way we think about our tech. This $800 minimalist phone is designed to keep us grounded, focused, and connected with real life. But is it worth the steep price tag?
Join me as I explore:
👉 The features and specs of the Light Phone 3
👉 What makes it different from your typical smartphone
👉 Why it’s being hailed as the ultimate minimalist phone
👉 The hefty cost-$800 retail (or $500 pre-order)-and whether it’s justified
👉 Who this phone is really for
Whether you’re looking to disconnect from social media, avoid distractions, or embrace a simpler life, this phone could be a game-changer-or just another expensive gadget. Watch now and decide for yourself if the Light Phone 3 is a tool for better living or an overpriced marketing ploy.

The camera is very high quality (and 50 megapixels). There aren't many options for simple phones with a high quality camera. It also costs a lot to manufacture a phone as a small company, remember the Ubuntu phone? Even Canonical could not get that phone off the ground. The price is high, but we have also been conditioned to absurdly cheap phones by mass production companies with monopolistic market share.
Bro rambles too much otherwise interesting
Other people have mentioned the economies of scale and how that factors into the price, but another thing that's worth thinking about is the lack of data harvesting. Google and apple subsidise the cost of their phones by selling your data. As Light don't do this categorically, throughout the life of the device, there will be more upfront cost. Which is expensive, but it's cool. You have a phone that's a tool, rather than a device that turns you into a product sold to advertisers. Also 200 dollars for a phone with a glass back and milled aluminium body is a WILD expectation. But i get it too - it's a lot of money for something that does less. I'm hoping the cost will mean that it does less, just for much much longer.
Good stuff man. More people should hear this
@@cornnose1842 thank you! Glad you liked it. It hits home for me too for sure
Great video! Iove it just got one of these Cat S22
@@michelle.cervantes thanks! Its a good one I hope you like it
hey does it have RCS text messaging or just SMS?
Also do the Mudita Kompakt.
I’ll check it out!
I own one. It's a Good Brick. ;)
They have tapped into a widely overlooked market of people. I don't like social media and I'm tired of getting sucked into youtube rabbit holes or feeling like I need to look something up on Google every 10 minutes. But I don't hate smartphones nor do I want to carry around dumbphone: I love having (good) music apps, directions with real time traffic, digital wallet, weather, transit, updated text messaging, and a QR code reader (because, unfortunately, some places don't print menus anymore). I recently bought tickets to a show and per the website I am not allowed to print the tickets as they will not be valid unless presented on a smartphone app or a digital wallet. I just want an in between dumb- and smartphone with a small form factor that won't make my life more stressful but also will cut out all of the extra junk that smartphones bring. The Light Phone III doesn't look like the answer in its current state but I see that they are taking big steps to go in that direction, which influenced my decision to preorder one for $499. It's kind of a "vote with your dollar" approach, I feel. I am hoping other people and companies will catch on.
I have a Cats22 and for me it’s a perfect in between of smartphone and dumb phone. It’s got the apps but way less distracting. Plus it’s like 60 bucks
It's far too expensive. I can buy a cheap $150 android phone, uninstall or block all the distracting apps. Put it in dark mode, then finish off by installing a minimalist launcher (there are lots of those)
Hey, I'm your 130th Subscriber. Actually i think i need to tell you, look the content is great man you've been working hard a lot i can see it in your eyes, it can be felt in your voice too. Look just hear me up you have the courage to talk consider writing the key-points and just try to stick with it, i think it would make the video become more attractive in terms of presentation.
Welcome! Thank you so much for the sub and for the kind and helpful words. I hope to continue improving my videos and presentations. I appreciate this and will try to incorporate it. Thank you!
2:37 They don't have the capital to get the manufacturing order at a scale where cost can exponentially drop, that's what really is. And that's likely the reason why it looks bulky, coz the parts are "off the shelf" and not custom designed to fit snugly with each other. They could have went to a typical android manufacturer and order a low tier production-ready model and build their OS from there.
Keep making videos man. You have a gift for this. Great job. You will grow a solid channel!
Dude thank you this means so much! I really appreciate it. It’s been a great experience, making videos these past few months. I’m excited to keep it going and hopefully grow a following!
This should be a custom android launcher. Not a whole phone.
$399 in the App Store 😂
Yeh I looked into this, the guy behind this 'project' has made multiple companies like this and none have evert been materialised - DO NOT BUY ONE!
This is the third iteration of an actual delivered product from a company with multiple reviews (positive and otherwise) all over the net.
Lol I think you're thinking about the Minimal phone maybe? This is from Light, who have brought two phones to market already (Lightphone, Lightphone 2). Generally they're known for having great communication.
@@TinTownKing Replying to me? Because I believe we’re on the same page.
Its like a watch. A statement, conversation starter. I would never buy a 700$ non smart watch either but still, there are people who pay a lot for watches (and I'm not talking about the ones you buy as an investment)
That’s a great point - I supposed there are a lot of things that are priced much higher than they should be. For a 700 dollar watch I’d hope it is at least mechanical with its tiny gears and stuff haha
3:02 An "unlocked phone" is not tied to any specific carrier or network (AT&T, Verizon, etc.). So, you can switch providers by simply swapping SIM cards.
So like pretty much any other phone that you buy in a store and not through the carrier?
@@Vengir Ya, most bought through Amazon or a store are unlocked.
so thats basically it its NOT taking advantage the screen they used was custom made to the size they needed these are not off the shelf screens another cost if your not making millions of them the cost per unit is high im on yesr 5 with my light phone 2 it depends how much your time is worth
Hey there thanks for your input. I’m excited to hear how you like it when it arrives! I just can’t fathom why a 799 price tag should be associated to a device like this. My brain cannot compute. You bring up the long life of the device, and that is something I can totally see as valid. Putting a premium on a phone that will last a decade is a noble and understandable pursuit. Still. It’s a chunk of change.
@ its not 799 no one has paid 799 to get one ordered thats just the Estimated price tag worst case senario but they cant get parts as cheap as apple a part apple can get for 2 dollars per part as they buy millions at time light may pay 10 dollars per part as they buy in small batches its as simple as that they cant make a phone as cheap as apple can they dont have the buying power
@ and ill deff let you know how i like it after 5 years being on the light phone 2 i know for certain i wont go to a smartphone ever
your LATE it was 399 at first when i got my preorder in and the price is the less of something you produce the more per device they dont have the buying power of an apple or a samsung so they have to make money some how to stay in business.
Hey dude , you kinda remind me jack black. I don’t know why but maybe your face expression .
Haha thanks!
I see it hahah
Hey man you look like Stifler from American Pie😊.How google maps works on this phone?
lol I haven’t heard that one before 😂😎 thanks for watching! Google maps, wayz, all that stuff it works. It’s a cheap phone and it’s hard to type in, but it does the stuff it should.
I've seen this video like two weeks ago and I found it awesome. I came back because I needed someone to remind me that being on my phone is not not the best way to relax. Thank you for this video. This video is truly it!
@@talsytb wow that truly means so much to me. Thank you for such kind words. i am so grateful to give some encouragement!
Making a comeback like crocks
😂😂
You have a good personality that would do well on TH-cam. The only tips I would give is to maybe add some music into your videos, and maybe add a few pictures on to the screen every now and then, just to keep the viewers hooked. I know it's a shame you need to stimulate your audience a huge amount to keep them hooked, but if that's the way you need to do it to spread your message of digital minimalism, so be it. Keep up the good work man. Also I got the S22 a few days ago, I really like it, but kind of annoying there isn't many games which I can use the keypad for. Would love snake on this thing.
@@risheendab8924 that's very nice of you thanks for the help! I bet on the android store there is a snake game but it would be nice if it just came preloaded like an old Nokia
For the love of god... that thing is like a goddamn suitcase.

I bought this a week ago. And I love it
Heck yeah!
I was caught in a rainstorm yesterday and about an hour later, as I was using my iPhone, the screen blanked out. Found this Cat S22 and I have fallen in love with the thought of it so I ordered. Am keeping my youtube and e-mails on my laptop and keeping the essential only on this S22. Hopefully it works out, has very good reviews online!

Awesome!
The point with bear is something i think a lot when im stresed, like idk something is gonna happen in 2 days, why im bothering with that, just let go, you will be worried in two days not now when I cant even do anything
Completely! Not the easiest in practice but when it works it works well 🤘
Very nice video and interesting topics, keep it up! But the editing is kinda hatoic(?) i have no problem with that in your videos (well actually within this was a bit too much even for me), but others minght and also i think its not especialy alined with the thing you want to pass onto viewer unless you try to catch and hold tiktok/shorts people :), oh yea and the description is super cool that you make this bullet points onto your videos, great idea
This response means so much to me. I really appreciate you watching and the feedback. I think in the back of my mind I’m like, I’m just making something and I want to make it good but also who’s going to really give it the time of day? But you have changed my view entirely and really given me confidence to make things as great as I can. I want to make good long form things and quality beginning middle and end is what I’m truly going for. Thank you! I can be a bit all over the place sometimes haha
SUNBEAM flip phones are also great for digital minimalism.

Yussssss welcome to the club!
My secondary phone is a Nokia 3310. I always carry it with me. I don't use it widely, but it has a second SIM card that my family knows. If my smart phone runs out of battery, they can call me on Nokia. If my smartphone dies without any signs, I can just put the SIM card in the Nokia because it supports dual SIM. Overall, I use the Nokia as a reliable basic phone for emergencies.
@@ThePeterasd awesome!
For me smartphones without social media is also a problem. I have a flip phone now but here i am
It is wild how social media can really trap us. At least long form TH-cam videos can have some benefit to them. Unlike short form ones.
@@stimuless you're right 👍 today is my day 2 of flip phone and it's hard. Your smile made me think it's easy 😐
I would like to ditch my smartphone as I do everything I need on my beefy desktop computer and I prefer my big 27 inch screen, but I can't... I live in France and most if not all banks do require you to have a smartphone for managing transactions and your bank account and yes there is paid alternatives but why should I pay ? Also there is a lot of other things and services designed with smartphone in mind, they designed their thing without considering that maybe some people don't want to use a smartphone or don't even own one to begin with.
Quoi de neuf! Merci pour le réglage. That is interesting. I didn’t know about the banks reliance on smart phones. It is strange to realize how reliant our systems are on us having a tiny computer with us at all time. One nice thing about this phone is that it is a smart phone but also doesn’t make you endlessly scroll. I hope you can find an alternative though.
I have this phone almost a year i love it so far and its amazing when you start to learn how to use the keypad in texting and scrolling
Awesome to hear!
Cool phone and concept but too HUGE to carry around. Might as well use a regular smartphone
It is larger for sure, but also way more durable and I don’t mindlessly scroll nearly as much as with my iPhone. That’s why I like it!
Hey man, my name is Johnny and I am a freelance logo designer, nice to meet you, would you love to have an unique monogram logo to help your branding to have a cult following image to attract more viewership and be the proud image to trademark your hardworks which your audiences can recognise you with and want to see it on your merchs too? I would love to craft it for you, let me know if you interested for me to work with you ! :-)
Hey Johnny I really appreciate you reaching out. I’m going to get a few more videos under my belt and then it would be cool to see how we could work together!
Yes man, thank for interested and it will be great, I wait for you and reach out to me when you ready! Great content by the way! Good luck!
That means a lot!! Thank you I definitely will.
How is the audio when speaking with people on the phone? is both microphone quality and sound quality on your ears good?
Hey - I have had no problem with the audio. In fact I feel like the flip phone design is more ergonomic than the flat iphone design. The speaker is pretty loud on it too, so I can listen to music/podcasts etc directly from the speaker and it sounds pretty good. I'm really happy with the design of the phone as a whole, especially considering the price. Bottom line: the audio is good.
