Set in Stone - Portrait of a Sculptor
Stone sculptor Mark Feeley, has completed many unique commissions over the years but being asked to sculpt a life-size Ewe and Lamb from a four and a half tonne block of Roscommon limestone is by far one of the most unusual requests he's ever had.
This film is an intimate portrayal of Mark and his passion for his work as well as a record of the progress on this project which was commissioned in 2017 by Roscommon Lamb Festival on their 10th Anniversary.
Filmmaker Mike Hourigan, captures the essence of the Craftsman bringing this block of stone to life as limestone chips fly and the dust settles.
Donations towards the fundraising efforts towards the Sculpture can be made at

Roscommon Lamb Festival takes place over the May Bank Holiday Weekend in Roscommon Town. Check out all the festival events at www.roscommonlambfestival.com

Your Dad was exactly right - that is the best way I have ever heard it put. "You just need to know what it should look like when it's finished."

Hello, I watched with great interest. First noticed the chain saw to cut the stone.. adding water. But what kind of chain is used there? Diamond coated? Next the craftsman talked about the beautiful gray color of the Irish 340 Million Years old Limestone. I wonder if we also have such Limestone here.. not sure.. but looks similar.. but without fossils. th-cam.com/video/EZ8Vj_9ytdM/w-d-xo.html Greetings from the former island Ceylon to the island of Eire.

RIP Alexander "Alec" Mackie he was one of the best granite sculptors we had in St. Louis for almost 35 years! He was a master human being!

Un gran artista que entrega al mundo lo más puro del ser humano. Absolutamente admirable. Gracias. También gracias al ayudante del escultor, como así también a quienes hicieron éste video.

I've worked in the stone game 15 years...at the start I was just interested in the stone...after a while I realised all the people I worked with were the real reason I was there....I still love the stone and the buildings but the people have enriched my life greatly...creative, spirited and proudly odd.... Cheers Mark

Great video . I could watch it 10 x and never get bored. You seem like a nice honest hard working man and I love how you let the boy help, just like your dad did. That is very important.

Your video was truly inspirational. I have just started to teach myself to cut letters in stone, and your approach to the medium is encouraging me to "have a go'. Thanks Mark. I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. My local quarry produces Hornton blue stone.

I normally work with relatively soft sandstone, which makes your choice of stone look like hard work, but then again if you want easy stick to plastecine .

being a carpenter, I couldn't help but notice him using a carpenters hammer. Wood is nice but there is nothing more awesome as a stone building.
