This clip shows the fading influence the Catholic meaning of Christmas had even in 1900. The music was banal and quite irritating. French "religious" Christmas music is quite lovely, particularly the Noels written for the organ. However given the overall secular feeling some late 19th century salon music would have done quite nicely.

The background,... I guess music was clearly modern. But it does make me wonder. What music did they use for it back then? I'm guessing they played the background music live while the film rolled. But for horror, they had to use dark sinister music. Which, at the time, it wasn't exactly easy to come by. I'd love to hear it.

I just discovered Silent -ology and emailed Lea about my love of McTeague by Frank Norris . I have re read the book many many times and also loved the movie Greed based on the book by Erich Von Stroheim . I grew up in a town right next to Fort Lee New Jersey where silent films began and even sat in on some meetings of the Fort Lee historical film society . There are still some sights you can see from those days like Rambo’s saloon . Anyway it was around 1996 or so when i really took a serious interest in silent film and began renting all the famous ones like Greed , Napoleon, the Crowd , and Sunrise just to name a few . For books there was The parades Gone by written by Kevin Bronlow among others . I purchase the four hour version of Greed and the new version of Napoleon by Abel Gance .

And he's still there, to this day...

looking beyond the technical mastery of the special effects, it's interesting to note that a group of women each holding up a cross only gets so far, but a group of men doing the same thing manage to solve the "problem" also, the comments mentioning jesus when he's nowhere to be seen in this movie lead me to google "are jesus and st micheal the same person?"...that was a rabbit hole, for sure!

If church was like this I would go every week.

I loved the movie, but people way back then really did not know how to pick the right music for the video.

This was 1899? I'm not trying to call our near ancestors stupid, but someone saw that and was more than half sure it was real.
