I wonder how we might mediate and "govern" through crisis if "expert consensus" is considered an appropriation of the state's power? Is it really realistic to expect that we could have, using the COVID example, effectively managed that very dynamic crisis through traditional "democratic" or electoral processes? Isn't that what experts are for - make the best decisions you can collectively manage when shit hits the fan? Should we, as doctors/healthcare professionals/experts, have stood back and let the wave of sick patients overwhelm our healthcare infrastructure while we waited for a more democratic process to play out?
Great conversation, will have to listen again as there are a lot of things to digest, v good interviewer also.
Thank you Matthew for the clarification of devotion to something greater (Life World, Christianity) creates alarm when there's a power grab by political authorities.
They don't hate white women? You study moral? Who creates the moral control all us, since ancient times.
Anyone who can't draw breath while seated is hardly the rhetoritician we longed for. You need a healthy body to have a healthy mind. We are far away from a parlour game now and i reasonably expect the situation to deteriorate. There will definitely not be a buffet of snacks ahead.
Read this book 3 times now and will do so again in the future. The best book out there explaining the origins of a lot of the crazy situations we find ourselves in now. 10/10. Recommend Eric Kaufman also in this regard. Monsters in their fields 👏👏👏👏
Why are you giving a voice to that nitwit?
Ross Douthat made a keen point. American cinema is, inescapably, about America.
Kyle Smith's wild card of Wes Anderson is a good wild card. Smith aptly describes it as a backdoor way into civil society. Anderson tells stories in which, as Kyle rightly noted, individuals seek an institution in which they can be themselves while also belonging to a family. This theme starts in Anderson's first feature film, Bottle Rocket. Thank you, Kyle.
