Elver Eating Competition Frampton on Severn Archive Footage
A compilation of BBC Footage from the annual elver eating competition held in Frampton on Severn on the village green outside the Three Horseshoes Pub. The current landlady's father Mike O'Gorman can be seen eating elvers (and winning a place in the Guinness book of records) from about 1:00 in, along with the O'Gorman/Bradley family watching in the crowd at around 1:27. The competition was suspended in the 80s due to the rising cost of Elvers however it has been revived and will be back in front of the pub in Bank Holiday 25th May 2015!

What a waste of money. You can sell a plate of living elvers for few hundreds of US dollars.

This was back in the 60s and 70s when elvers were so prevalent along the river Severn that they used the leftover catch to fertilise the fields. The tradition died off in the late 70s when the eel population crashed and prices rose. There have been good crops of elvers in the Severn over the past few years and prices have dropped but the recently revived competition uses a reconstituted fish substitute.
