A How To: Roof Rack your Omnium Cargo Bike
Let me begin by saying i'm not a big car guy. Looking back, most of my life choices have been made around being able to ride my bike everywhere I need to go.
But an unfortunate part of riding bikes for fun is that you can't always ride your bike to the places you want to ride your bike at, and with that sad fact in mind, I decided I needed a way to travel with the omnium where it wasn't crammed up inside of our tiny hatchback.
So I hobbled together a roof rack for my Omnium! I used 1up USA van trays (1up-usa.com/product/van-tray), extruded aluminum from T-Nutz and Dam Good Bike hinges (damgood.bike/products/ouch-1-omnium-utter-cargo-hinge) to help fully secure it to the rack (highly recommend).

Routine Maintenance: Drilling Holes in my Titanium Omnium Cargo Bike!
มุมมอง 2.8K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
My favorite bikes usually have two specific things: a dropper post and a dynamo. I love 'em. And all my bikes have at least one if not both. Follow along as I fix some damaged dynamo wiring, and drill a hole in my titanium cargo bike to clean up the dropper post routing.
A Short Story: Riding Bikes, Taking Photos, and Cities as Characters.

The only other thing I've been into as long as I've been into riding bikes is taking photos, today I thought I'd share my experience combining the two in a city I've only recently grown to love, with a camera I've been shooting with for 10 years, and getting around on the best transportation to see a place, using a bag a friend made, while documenting the whole process.
Bikepacking up a Mountain on an Omnium Cargo Bike: Is The Downhill Really Always Worth the Uphill?

Why take a cargo bike camping up a mountain? Well, it's a got dang given that camping on your bike is freaking rad, and why not make it a little easier on yourself packing-wise? I mean, all I gotta do is strap all my gear on the front rack and whaz-amm! Good to go! The Spindle Campout S24O - Party Pacing and Good Time Chasing.
มุมมอง 2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Took the Omnium Cargo on an overnighter with The Spindle on their first campout of 2022. We rode 61 miles (98km) total out and back to Towerhouse Farm Brewery who graciously let us camp on the farm a hundred meters from the tap room. Good times were had, good dogs patted, and cool country views were witnessed on this roaring adventure an hour south of Atlanta, homebase to The Spindle Custom Bags.

Hello friends, so in two weeks time I'm off to another continent. I've been invited by my friend Chris, aka @Slimwonder to hop along on a trip to Sierra Leone to help film the trip which will include following the Tour de Lunsar, a multi-day stage race from the capital, Freetown, to the town of Lunsar. The team has been introduced via the Swift Bags Instagram, which I'll link below if you'd lik...
Taking my Omnium Cargo Bike on Single Track

Yes, I said 'also' twice in one sentence in this vid, but also please focus on the cargo bike ripping on mtb trails, though they may be tame. Fun was had, hike-a-biking was obligatory, and nobody fell! I call that a win-win-win-win-win-win. Word. See ya in the next one!
Let me tell you about this epic 11 mile journey a few friends took up a mountain and back.
มุมมอง 5382 ปีที่แล้ว
Lookout Mountain straddles the border between Tennessee and Georgia and makes an awesome spot for bike camping thanks to a few connecting trails. A whopping 22 miles round trip led to one of the chillest, most fun overnighters I've had in a long time. This trip was a much shorter version of a 60 mile round trip overnighter we had previously taken from Chattanooga to Cloudland Canyon State Park ...

My Titanium Omnium Cargo bike - Lemme tell you about it!
มุมมอง 20K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Let me tell you about my bike. I was introduced to Omnium delivering food and paper in my courier days, and after leaving, I opted for the newer WiFi in titanium instead of a small pickup truck. The drivetrain is 12 speed Shimano XT, and I keep a spare chain on ice. The Crank is a carbon Easton EC90-SL matched to a 34 tooth Raceface Cinch chainring. With a slight frame modification, I've instal...

DUDE! This is such a good video. I just got an omnium and have had some of the same thoughts about transportation. The Damn Good hinges are also such a good solution for getting to the front wheel!! So good. So so good. Love your videos, keep them coming!!
@@TrentSiggard thanks!
@@stay_loose finally put in an order for the Ouch-1’s after this. You put me over the edge!
Didn’t know about the 1 Up tandem rack. I haven’t attempted to drive my Omnium anywhere, but good to know that exists as an option
@@gavinlikesbikes it's rad because you can make either side fit anywhere from 16" to 29" wheels. perfect for the wheels on the omnium. prolly should've mentioned that in the video haha, geez.
those damgood hinges are pretty but they'd be 148 euros to ship and import here. what other alternatives did you consider when looking for a hinge like this? does anything comparable exist a bit cheaper?
unfortunately with a highly niche and nicely built product like this, that's just the cost. i will say you get what you pay for with these. but look out for Omnium's own version coming soon. though i don't know what their pricing will be, or how they work necessarily, i'm sure shipping within Europe will not be as drastic.
Nice! Is loctite necessary for the t-nuts / bolts?
@@brandonsouba probably not necessary, but with all the vibrations this setup will see, i don't want to take any chances losing a nut and (hopefully) not losing a bike.
@@stay_loose Oh yeah, I wasn’t throwing shade - was going to recommend it but am not great at DIY stuff so really didn’t know. Love your videos - did you move to Wisconsin from ATL?
@@brandonsouba using thread-lock cuts down on the time needed maintaining stuff like this. you still have to inspect the bolt, but way less regularly. Sandy Munro calls bolts "threaded un-fasteners" (as opposed to threaded fasteners). i think it's a clever little joke, but it's also true
@@brandonsouba all good, yeah, loc-tite is good for this type of application for sure. and thanks, yeah, ope! we're midwesterners now!

What’s that song you are playing in the beginning of the video? You make a cargo bike look so fun! Time to start saving, rad vid!
yo! sorry for the delay, had to look for it in my archived project files! it's part of this old movie soundtrack from the krautrock band Can, before they became Can! th-cam.com/video/3UEaJza15_k/w-d-xo.html
@@stay_loose Proto Can, thanks!
I bet 100$ you destroyed that machete cutting that log
lol, if you play it back, you'll see i'm cross-cutting, so machete was totally fine after this. feel free to send me the money via cash app ($layhee) or paypal (paypal.me/layhee)! thanks!
Namaste!
Yoooo this video was vibes as fuck. I need to make some videos about taking photos while riding my bike!
photo rides are rad! great way to explore a city.
😎👌🏾
How would you compare this with the Bullitt cargo bike? Thanks ☺️
the bullitt feels long and low where this feels snappier and happier. i loved my bullitt when i had one, especially for heavy load hauling on city streets, but for off-roading & mountain biking, this is the cargo bike for it 👌
@@stay_loose cool! Thanks I have a boarder collie Dog 🐶 I think both might be great! I like that the Ominium is great for Mtb tracks etc!
When you're riding an omnium without cargo it feels pretty much like a regular bike. If you have the mini-max you can take it into elevators and trains and such because it's not much longer than a regular bike. You can relatively easily lift an unloaded or lightly loaded Omnium and carry it on stairs when needed, both because it's only about 20kg but also because it's very well balanced and you can pretty much just put it over your shoulder using the top tube. Of course once you load up the omnium with over 50kg it's no longer as fun and nimble but still quite doable. The bullitt on the other hand is built for having load, 50kg handles like a dream. But it's too long for regular elevators, too heavy and not easy to lift. For me personally, if I were to choose a bike for the rest of my life, it would be the omnium mini-max because it's both a really fun bike and can still carry a person or a ton of cargo when you really need it. So if you're planning on hauling heavy and bulky cargo regularly or want to transport more than one child, I'd go for the bullitt. If you want to get our groceries home, maybe a christmas tree or some smaller furniture, or have a kid on there, and still want to have a fun bike, I'd go for the omnium. Also if your storage options are limited the omnium is much more compact. ps. I've used the bullitt for deliveries for many years and i currently have both an omnium for when I want to have fun with my kids on there or if i want to go without electric assist, and a regular long-john cargo bike for when i need to put in both kids and groceries or it's raining etc.
@@barbanousse thanks for the answer! 😊👌🏾
me..considering the Omnium MINI!! ( Gates Belt Drive! )...definitely adding a 'Dropper Post' too!!....cheers!
nice! i sometimes wish i had gone with the minimax. good middle ground. hell yeah droppers are sick!
I'd love to compare this to the Surly Big Dummy packed with 100 pounds on what rides best thru trails.
Well done
thanks!
Hells yeah
Sick Omnium! Whats the rear tire and wheel size you got on there?
thanks! it's a 29x2.25 (57mm-622) Schwalbe Racing Ralph. love it for mixed terrain stuff.
15,9kg with webbing on that plate? Still with tubes?
i guess you couldn't hear it because my sound levels and sound editing knowledge were way off when i first made this, but i said "without pedals or a kickstand". and yes, 15.9kg with webbing. no tubes. the wheels are tubeless.
Its very difficult for non native speakers listen to ur voice when the music is louder.
yeah sorry about that, i was using my phone's mic and shitty computer speakers to edit these 3 years ago so the levels are all out of whack for sure! still learning and trying to get better at sound design/editing!
What box are you using?
it's an alley find/ground score/reused, reduced, recycled-style collapsible box labeled "IFCO" not sure you can buy them, just look around your local trash pile and you might get lucky!
dude this rocks, great video
thanks! it was a fun trip!

Super cool. Stoked to hear more vids are coming!
Fun video and good music!

Awesome film man. Much love from a fellow Omnium owner (and lust for your titanium). I’ll be back to watch more of your movies.
thankie!

15,9kg
Content is so good brother. Keep it up.
thank you so much. trying! new story coming soon!

E, quick question I'm thinking of doing the North Cape 4000 on an omnium but not Ti, what sort of speed is it capable off on steady roads?
nice! hard to say! that's entirely dependent on you, the weight/tires/gearing of the bike, and conditions like wind and weather. personally, on a beautiful summertime overnighter a few years ago with no wind and flat paved bike paths, my 42lbs/19kg (with gear) bike and i were cruising around 12-15mph/19-24kmh at any given time. as soon as i hit elevation though it was closer to 5mph avg haha
@@stay_loose Cheers Dude, I normally kick out 25-30 km on endurance events. It was a thought so I could carry our Bivvi kit as this has been slimmed down but it let's Ceri enjoy the ride while I burn the matches. 😂
@jamesbicknell4706 very nice. yeah the bike is gonna be heavier if it's not titanium, and wind resistance goes way up overall, not for everybody but it's my favorite way to bike camp!
I took my '90s rigid MTB on a singletrack with a DIY cargo trailer attached, as a test to check for its weak points. Fun as shit, and useful to learn its limits: every single bolt unscrewed itself and I almost lost the wheel twice lmao, I added washers, locknuts, threadlocker, and it is now fine!
Sick trip! These bikes are so rad!
Love the edit 🤘
and great videos btw... I would enjoy seeing more!
thanks! still working on the next one!

Hats Off Bro!!! Love it.
siiiiick video! what tires did you use for the offroad upgrade?
thanks! Schwalbe Rocket Ron 20x2.25 in the front and Schwalbe Racing Ralph 29x2.25 out back.
Starving for some new content!
working on it! had a million life changes this past winter. new stuff coming up though!
Hello, would you like to tell my what tires you have on your Omnium?
surely! i have a Schwalbe Racing Ralph on the back and a Schwalbe Rocket Ron on the front.
What what wheels and tyres do you use? (and happy with them?)
I built the wheels myself using a White Industries rear hub, and a Shutter Precision dynamo hub up front. the rims are carbon from a company called Nextie, and i've had nothing but good luck with them. we would build up a set of wheels with these rims at least once a week at my last shop. As for tires, Schwalbe is one of very few brands that makes tubeless ready 20" tires, so i went with a slightly more aggressive rocket ron on the front, and one of their XC tires on the back, the racing ralph. TLDR - custom and yes, stoked on em!
Wow, Sounds awesome, just as Video. The tires are 2mm (with 57mm) wider than Omnium suggests for the tire width. We’re there any issues? Despite the minimal weight loss of Carbon to Aluminium especially in the 20“ wheel (650gr. vs 280gr) have you had a choice of driving another bike to compare them?
@@Elefantenklo23 tires are close, but totally fine if you stay out of chunky mud. i have ridden the same rims on non-cargo bikes and they are rad. that minimal weight loss is super noticeable when you first spin up. definitely feel it when you're stopping and starting for city riding on this thing.
Your channel deserves more views.
Love the shots and your editing style. Keep it up!
lovely vid as always !! i was curious about the strap you're using to hold your camera in your back, the one with three straps, messenger bag style. it always bother me when my camera slides from my back to my hips when i'm riding .. thanks!!
Thanks! the stabilizer strap is from PS Bagworks. the main strap is a Peak Design Leash, and the PS Bagworks Stabillizer strap works with most skinny straps to add the cross-chest strap with a magnetic fidlock buckle 👌
I love that part of the beltline ✌
