    A friend recommended this book to me about a decade ago. Lent me his copy. I read it extremely fast. It provoked many lines of thought and study that I might have never engaged in had I not actually read this book. Originally, I'd thought I'd read it and debunk it. But, after reading it, I wanted to understand Bell's perspective better than I did. Ended up buying my own copy and rereading it. Pondering its topics and exploring the questions that I came up with from reading it and the books that I later read to further explore those questions. You're summary of the book is very good. And, the question about whether or not Christianity is viewed as more hateful now than it was when "Love Wins" was first published is a good one. Sadly, I would say that it is, in many cases viewed as more hateful. I think this is likely do to the pushback from certain Christians against Left-leaning political and social positions and agendas. Those that oppose those Christians see their form of Christianity as hateful.

      @@hrothgarrannulfr1972 A friend told me the other day that he was a literalist and believed that the bible was the infallible, inerrant word of God. HOWEVER, he said that wasn't the cornerstone of his faith and he really didn't like to talk about it, because that became the big defining issue, the issue of Jesus just got usurped. I liked his explanation and it reminded me of Bell's book. Once you make 'something else' the issue, it leaves little room for love. Thanks for the reply and encouragement. You know, the hardest part about this format is figuring out what to include in the 'short' video. It's actually a good exercise in itself, i.e., figuring out what absolutely HAS to be included. Thanks again.

    I have read many of Dr. Bart Ehrman's popular and scholarly books over the last 30 years. Most of those books I read AFTER I became a 12er Shi'ite Muslim in 1999 at the age of 39. You might call it my mid-life crisis. Dr. Ehrman is worth reading even if one doesn't believe all his positions because he is a good academician. Like Dr. Ehrman, I had a "Born Again" experience in my teens (the 1970s). As time went on, I learned many of the same things about the Bible and Church History that Dr. Ehrman learned. Dr. Ehrman was so disappointed that the Bible was not the inerrant book he thought it was that eventually he became what he calls an "agnostic atheist". I had Roman background before I became a Fundamentalist Evangelical Christian at age 17. Dr. Ehrman, as I remember, was raised in a family that was not very religious. So, when he reached his conclusions about the Bible, he lost his faith in God altogether, which is not a happy process. When Fundamentalist Evangelical Christianity didn't work for me anymore, I went back to the Roman Catholic Church. It was wonderful to come back. The problem is that I could no longer believe several Christian doctrines. However, I still had faith in one God, albeit not a Trinitarian one. Islam was a better fit for me than Judaism. Reading about the Succession Crisis after the passing of Muhammad, I became a 12er Shi'ite Muslim. Many who end up becoming a Muslim may become Sunni. Some become Wahabis (Fundamentalist). A few become Quran alone, which is not a cohesive group at all. I liked you concise review of Dr. Ehrman's book and liked your video and subscribed to your channel. Peace.

      @vinceendris 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey, thanks for sharing. I think so many of us have traveled the road that Ehrman has traveled. In my opinion, fundamentalist evangelical Christianity has done a lot of damage to the Christian faith and now there are so many who were brought up in it that need to process and deconstruct. Ehrman helps with that. However, I mostly read him because, like you said, he is just a really good, honest scholar. I'm glad you were able to find a faith where you were able to better relate to the divine.

    When reading Erhmann, PLEASE REMEMBER that he is engaging in wild speculation. The Holy Trinity is first seen in Genesis. The first Verse of Saint John' Gosple points to this. The Word, spoken at Creation, made flesh to dwell amongst us. Anyone walking next to Jesus, seeing him reorder matter and raise the dead, would KNOW this is something only GOD does. It's complicated and it isn't really something we can COMPLETELY understand. Early Christianity knew this. ALSO there were not "early Christianities" there was always ONE Church, and later, people split from it. And they are STILL splitting from it today. Erhmann is a Desciple of Von Harnak, who near the end, didn't believe. Erhmann is spreading B U L L S H I T. DON'T STEP IN IT.

      To be fair to Ehrman, he is speaking as a historian. He is not seeking to defend nor shatter a faith. Please read (or don’t read) him as such. We should not thrust our faith on others nor judge everyone through our own faith. You simply can’t read the books of a critical historian through the lenses that it has to back a certain faith.

      @@vinceendris be reasonable. Orthodox Christianity DID NOT corrupt Holy Scripture. The very title of Erhmann's book MAKES THAT CLAIM. His evidence- cherry picking of outlier data AND THEN REPRESENTING AS NORMATIVE. THE MAJORITY of the manuscripts that we have ARE THE MAJORITY for a reason. Erhmann DOES have an agenda, and his agenda is to chip away at Christianity until nothing is left. Erhmann is not a historian of any consequence. Every one knows that THINGS exist in a CONTEXT. ....books never exist in a vacuum. The Holy Scriptures have a context. And that context is The Orthodox Christian Church. 6:17 - I do believe that some current applications of Christianity - as other religions - have many hateful aspects to them: restrictions, retributions, revenge, adomination. For example , look at the Westboro Baptist Church which goes to funerals of gay people celebrating those deaths and chanting hateful commentaries. I do think trying to migrate a religion to reflect only love or compassion is the right way.
