JJJJJerome Ellis on Long Take
Please note: This documentation is from the virtual performance on Wednesday, June 28th at 6PM. This hybrid performance originally was scheduled for Saturday, June 24th.
Artist and proud stutterer, JJJJJerome Ellis, offers an improvised movement and musical piece in response to Carolyn Lazard: Long Take. The performance is an offering of gratitude to Carolyn for their work considering the aesthetic and material dimensions of dependency, care, and access.
This performance is presented in collaboration with I wanna be with you everywhere, a collective formed by Arika, Amalle Dublon, Jerron Herman, Carolyn Lazard, Park McArthur, Alice Sheppard and Constantina Zavitsanos. The organizers write: “I wanna be with you everywhere is a gathering of, by, and for disabled artists and writers and anyone who wants to get with us for a series of crip meet-ups, performances, readings and other social spaces of surplus, abundance and joy. It refuses policies of individuation and inclusion in favor of (and in the flavor of) whatever disability aesthetics has in bodymind. We won’t know what this is ‘til it shows us, but we do know that disability communities don’t only make art about disability. 😉 (winky face emoticon).
We’re operating from the point of view of access intimacy. Access isn’t an individual’s need, but a common capacity shared between us all.”
Please note that reviewed subtitles have been added to TH-cam.

I have not watched YET! I studied this before the internet was a thing. With the internet I was able to find so much more of the pre bombing period of these folks vs those who control from the barrel of a gun. Now I can not find what was once openly posted. The truth is in the court house and what they are still hiding to this day. The Lord knows the truth and no one will escape his wrath for harming the wee little children.

48:38 "you're gonna see what happens when you look at something like Nothing but the Blood intensively--and then you try to make something with it, that's not a disavowal or fetishization of what it is but a kinda complex engagement with how it's bound up with black creativity"

can't quite remember but there were a few other parts like with the film stock question where he phrases this again: don't ask what film stock I used ask me why I did what I did. And in that instance too, like with the above quote, any kind of straight replication (which would probably miss the point i.e. disavow or fetishize) is *already* off the table--cause the film stock is discontinued !

My fav thing about APEX is how he's described it as both re-interpreting and transforming how his journals worked *AND* at the same time, pre-figuring a big million dollar movie, a movie which we can only imagine through this same kind of complex engagement he's talking about. To imagine the movie you have to imagine how it would understand and translate how APEX works across all the different constraints each has / would have. These are all questions of social organization as much as like pure aesthetics or whatever

‘The End of the Ballet’ is my favorite from this collection. Sadness, melancholic, the indication of a forever goodbye…it’s all there. He feels each note. I feel it too.
