Sailing over blue water in the Greenland Sea close to Jan Mayen with a following northerly force 7 Beaufort. Our sailing yacht Cachalot, a heavy 36 feet steel ketch with centerboard, gently behaved. With the mainsail, mizzen and staysail down and the yankee reefed to 50% we logged 8 knots. Halfway to Iceland the wind went down and the sun came through. Cachalot meets Cachalot Rendez-vous with an adult male sperm whale near Spitsbergen on our way to Jan Mayen during the Cachalot Arctic Tour CAT 2015 (www.sy-cachalot.nl in Dutch). Close to our sailing yacht the cachalot was quietly ventilating at the surface of a calm Greenland Sea. He nearly hit our boat when he started to dive into the Arctic abyssal depths.

We had seen several whale species before but this was something different. Sailing closer the blows disappeared. Exited but disappointed too we stared at the horizon. Where are those guys? Then suddenly two giant blue grey masses raised from the water in front of our boa...
