He's trying to explain a nuanced thing, but the answer he seems to be talking around is that we went to the moon to beat the Russians, but once we got there first we didn't have a "why" as to go back. They didn't even finish out the Apollo program as planned. If you watch the Apollo 13 movie they even comment that going to the moon became as exciting as a trip to Pittsburgh to the American public. Once we landed, Congress didn't even have the will to fund it even when they had all the parts ready to go.
