    No offense but in our formerly wooded area it's a packed shale/rocks/old tree roots which make digging anything with less than a backhoe with a 12 inch bucket really tough. This might work for maybe an 8 to 10 inch or so hole but nothing deeper. Found out over the years to soak the ground really well for a day or two and then hope for the best.. Obviously best when the ground thaws in the spring as well...

    I use a Ryobi 40V post hole auger to plant almost everything in my garden. I use weed control fabric with 12" sq windows cut where I want my plants. I just drill through the openings add amendments and plant. I use paper mulch around the plant stem when they get established. My garden is almost weed free and the growth is amazing.

    • @powerplanterinc.2967
      @powerplanterinc.2967 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well when you are ready to upgrade to American quality let us know. Unfortunately, Ryobi intentionally made their shaft a special metric size so it can NOT be interchanged with other augers, so you are 'stuck' with that until the batteries die...then you can start over :)

    We're using the 7" HD auger with the Milwaukee Super Hawg 18V drill. With the large 12AH battery, the drill+auger tip the scale at about 25#, and it is a bit like wrestling a small bear to use. Not only do we have rocks like in this video, we also have a plethora of tree roots, as we are planting 3-10 gal potted plants in established woods, with large oaks, poplars and pine trees. We didn't know how the Milwaukee would perform, but the newly released Super Hawg had 2 key features that made it viable (aside from being our existing battery form factor..); 1) a low speed mode and 2) a clutch. Without a clutch, you would likely end up in the ER with a sprained or broken wrist, with the violent stalls when it hits large roots. The Milwaukee has a standard 1/2" Jacobs chuck, and you do have to re-tighten it periodically when working. We've probably planted 75 trees and shrubs so far, and it is holding up well. The auger is super well made, and equally tough. A great combination, that is so much faster and less exhausting than using pick and shovel, at least in these environs.

    That looks like horticultural malpractice. A planting hole should not be deeper than the root mass and about three times wider. They aren’t fence posts.

    • @powerplanterinc.2967
      @powerplanterinc.2967 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deeper and wider in this type of soil conditions allows for adding compost and other amendments so the plants actually have a chance of living and thriving. The video was done by a landscaper in Western Missouri who has no choice but to use a rock bar and pick axe prior to finding and using our augers. Labor cut by 50+%.

    We are just gardening homeowners but we live on the foothills of the Appalachians in Georgia and our soil is very similar to yours. My wife has been wanting to get a smaller setup like this for a long time now but I have always been skeptical that it will work on our very rocky soil but we recently just caved in and ordered one. It takes me 10 to 15 minutes to dig one hole for a quarter gallon pot and it's just not fun at all. We bought the most powerful 20v drill I could find (DeWALT DCD999) and the 3" auger with the thinking that it could be used to loosen up the soil when we have to dig holes bigger than the 3" diameter of the auger. We've still yet to try it out so hopefully the DCD999 is powerful enough with the 3" auger on rocky soil.
