John Raitt — Soliloquy (Carousel) [RARE 1955 studio]
John Raitt-the original Billy Bigelow in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel-gives a powerful (if abbreviated) rendition of his signature "Soliloquy", replete with a high B-flat and all, in a rare 1955 studio session.
American composer George Bassman conducts.
Source and sound
The original audio source was a beautiful, clean mono transfer released on Stage Door records (see www.stagedoorrecords.com/stage9072.html). I've taken the track, re-equalized it, and stereoized it to bring out as much dimension and life as possible. Hope you enjoy!

Dick Johnson's final words as he awaits execution for his crimes (my translation): May she think me free and far away On a new road to redemption. She waits for my return And the days go by, yes, the days go by- yet I do not come back, no, I do not come back. Minnie, my life's one and only love,* Minnie, how you loved me, how, oh, how you loved me, you, my one and only love.* Sung by one of God...

The Act 1 baritone and soprano arias from Puccini's La fanciulla del West set up the first two points of a classic love triangle. With Dorothy Kirsten as Minnie and Anselmo Colzano as the Sheriff Rance (right before Franco Corelli's entrance as Dick Johnson), here is a rendition for the ages. Restored from a wonderful transfer of the original radio broadcast. With some re-equalization and stere...

The Act 2 tenor aria from Puccini's La fanciulla del West has all the finest elements of verismo opera: explosive drama, beautiful legato lines, extreme dynamism. The performance of Cavalleria rusticana which opened the 1963-64 La Scala season has indubitably taken its place in the hall of operatic legends. With a triple-star cast featuring Franco Corelli, Giulietta SImionato, and Giacomo Gian Guelfi, all at the heights of the powers, this broadcast is one of the finest and fieriest examples of verismo singing on record. The Greatest Santuzza: Voi lo sapete, o mamma (Bruna Rasa, 1938 LIVE) ["stereo" remaster]
One of the remarkably underappreciated singers of the 20th century was dramatic soprano Lina Bruna Rasa. Trained in the verismo tradition, Bruna Rasa sang with electrifying dramatic intensity-and a very strong coordination of chest voice, even into the 5th octave. Though limited, her recorded discography is one of the treasures of the pre-World War II operatic world. In my own estimation, Bruna...

Callas as Lucia - Act 1 aria + duet (LIVE ‘STEREO’ Sound) [1956]
The title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor was one of Callas's great triumphs. This broadcast recording from December 1956 beautifully captures the Greek soprano's mid-career voice and interpretation of the Fountain Scene, beginning with Lucia's aria and ending with the Act 1 love duet. Suffering from a cold, she sings cautiously but expressively. She is joined first by Thelma Votipka as...
Di Stefano - Puccini Recital (1955, stereoized)
By the mid-1950s, the Italian lyric tenor Giuseppe di Stefano had reached his interpretive peak. Unlike what the stars of the next operatic generation would advocate, di Stefano gave everything each time he went on stage. The characteristic beauty of his voice, his exciting open sound, and his complete dramatic abandon mark him out as one of the brightest lights of the 20th century opera world....

Speechless.... Martinelli's Vesti la giubba was the recording that began my lifelong love of opera. His interpretation is unlike any other's!
Are you on social media?
Great soprano. Great aria. Great composer❤
Unbelievable, glorious Joan. Thank you for your work on the recording and posting!
Extraordinario Corelli es inmenso, vaya voz!.
Martinelli is great once you get used to the weirdness of it. Very unique. Stilll.....it's weird.
Just a note that the aria is running very sharp.
It is a pity that the quality of this recording is so bad. I think her performance would have been a revelation to see in person!
I still think in his prime there wasn't any one better, the only tenor that I have all his recordings.
In realta' quest'aria venne aggiunta alla fine dell'Alcina al debutto italiano di Joan Sutherland quale conclusione "felice" dell'opera.
The best ever,un grande Maestro Franco Corelli. The King of tenors !!!!
This IS incredible, and I haven't always been a big Martinelli fan.
Ti Ami…..szeretlek Orokke❤️
Giovanni Martinelli seguiu fielmente a partitura. :)

Meraviglioso. Immenso Corelli. ❤
You have done an incredible job with the remaster. I'm listening to this on some Sennheiser HD800s and... wow. I would buy this from you (for personal use only) if i was able. I would give the majority of my remaining years to be able to see our Maria live. Humanity reached a peak with her art.

As to Sutherland's diction, at least she tries. Caballe just defaults to "Ah" above the staff when she can't be bothered. Both are phenomenal vocalists, but I wonder why Sutherland comes in for universal criticism when Caballe's non-existent pronunciation is rarely mentioned. Back to ORFEO - in college they had a complete Haydn edition in the library stacks, but I couldn't locate the ORFEO to follow along with my Vienna 1967 bootleg LP. I only found out later that the actual title of the work is "L'anima del filosofo" so no wonder I couldn't find it in the index volume! This aria as many know is actually 'poached' from the singer of the role of 'Genio'. It's some of the most thrilling music in the work, along with the duets with Orfeo. If I were Genio, I'd be right annoyed to lose my big moment - but who on the planet could sing it better than Sutherland??
Before there was Spaghetti Westerns there was this.
her voice was very tired in this recording
…if her voice sounded „tired“, I wished any kind of similarity in current voices…In vain I know. RDS
Grande Corelli.
Insuperable.Galina con una voz extraordinaria y bella.A su altura.
Yea I really love this recording too. She is so judicious in her use of voice and phrasing. Nothing pushed. Just pure legato, clear words, and touching portamenti
I have a question. Can her live voice fill the Metropolitan Opera?
She performed there from 1961 o 1988 so I’d say a definite yes to that question 😊
Technical perfection, just for a start.
What a voice
What a beautiful piece. One of my favorite Puccini compositions. Grazie mille for sharing. Che meravigiioso The only rendition of this that I've heard that is better is Giuseppe Giacomini singing it Live in a concert in 1994 in Modena. Its available here on TH-cam. Check it out. Its stunning !
Correlli one of the greatest .one of my favourites 👍❤️
