When Painting Becomes Alive: Pam Evelyn on Her Latest Body of Work
For our new film, we sat down with painter Pam Evelyn ahead of her upcoming exhibition, "Frame of Mind," opening at our 510 West 25th Street gallery in New York on November 7. Evelyn's first solo presentation in the United States, this show, on view through December 21, will spotlight new works created by the artist during her recent residency in Cornwall, England. Here, Evelyn discusses the psychological and emotional resonances of mark making, delving into the ways painting can reflect one's state of being.

Take a walk with Pace CEO Marc Glimcher and #MayshaMohamedi through "yesterday I was a tiny tube of toothpaste," the artist's solo show and the inaugural exhibition at #PaceTokyo. The horrors of philistine ignorance and stupidity are on display here in the infantile scribblings of grotesquely ugly garish offenses against good taste and intelligence. This is visual punk-rock, the art of the artlessly stupid and incompetent. “Just as throwing branches and stones into a meadow cannot be rightly called architecture, art must have a higher order and reason”. Pythagoras "Abstract art is a product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered." Al Capp/Cartoonist (1909 - 1979) "The art market will tolerate everything except, with rare exception, ART" The Anonymous Master
How did I miss this! Ugh! This was such a beautiful honor to Sam Gilliam. One of my favorite contemporary artists!
Almost there but not quite there… missing pain and personal engagement…admirable production of work though.
Incredible work, it's absolutely mesmerising. No words, truly one of the most incredible painters of our generation. Side question: what is the soundtrack for this video?
What did you paint exactly?
Why are your post with adds?
Such rich paintings and I loved your honest description of your process
I agree he pushed photography to other realms after he lost his children ….these are the photos that make me push my own passion
Thank you for sharing!
Abstract rubbish!
Your stuff is really compelling. I could imagine spending hours looking at all that’s there! Color combos seem to put me in a better mood. I suffer complex PTSD, so that’s important. Thank you.
"Whoever wishes to discuss or explain their art, should begin by cutting out their own tongue." ~~~ Matisse
I'm also suspicious if a painting comes quickly, I will eventually work over it lol, paintings should be hard work for longevity
Or the painting becomes labored, looks overworked. I have a problem with overworking my paintings and putting waaay too much detail in them. In the back of my mind, I’m giving the customer “his money’s worth” until I started photographing the paintings in process. Thats when I realized that less is more, and I had to resist the temptation to keep “adding” extraneous colors, details and junk that detracted from the original thrust of the composition. If a painting appears as if it happened easily and with joy, DONT OVERTHINK IT. As women, we try too hard.
“ I actually like Franks later work after the death of his children”
Hi Pam, well spoken and the materials always lead the way. I think understanding that order elevates the practice and life. Namaste !!
rthe paintings have a sort of feel of the impressionists such as Andre Derain- some kind of French impressionism
saw the words frank and ocean near eachother and clicked without even registering what i looked at😭😭
Two greats ❤
Thank you for your honesty & openness. I wish you the Best for the future. A big one, I am predicting.
I love it!
So much fun to bash words and meanings around in an attempt to ascribe more to our works than is ever justified.
Like your comment you mean?
Justified?
Apparently you haven’t spent much time painting.
BTW -I live in Cornwall near to St Ives
Have you met the man with seven wives?
Pam I love you paintings. -wonderful colours !
Okay… so like so much of this kind of stuff… to most it’s meaningless. It’s random, obtuse, and uninspiring, except to the Artist of course. But, someone will buy it, or buy into it.
I’m curious. What have you sold or bought?
@ Yes I have, bought, sold, bartered
@@franksliwa362 *Bought and sold what?*

"Moi?" 🐈
If I pushed every single color available around on a canvas, can I get a show too? Give me a break
sure
Let’s see you do it! Now!
@user-cm1ld9cn5m *Easier said than done, you have no idea what you're talking about.*
Have you been composing a lot in the piano, brother? how much creating and how much hating on the internet have you done?
@@nathanpm In the Piano?? Plenty of creating here and I have enough self honesty to know when my work is not cutting it. Tired of seeing this kind of art lauded as high level; no restraint, no flow or harmony, no cohesive vision.
Art is full of mystery, nice video
Close enough, now drop the album
Good art speak

Most videos on YT are too long. Well, this one is too short. It wouldn't have been a waste another minute of Adrian art.
She's an amazing artist and an inspiration!
Lost me…this shape I invented…this vignet? Nope
The irony of the add “do your paintings look cartoony and plasticky but you don’t know what to do…?” by some online artist art school (Milano?) 😅. Love Nara and this fusion with music
lovely
I feel so thankful for life and art every time I come back to watch this. I was constantly listening to Crater Speak and this perfomance during the best days of my life.
I am so glad I became aware of this guy. Breath of fresh air! Very interesting.
Skip this background musik please!
lovely conversation.
The best thing about the World-Wide-Web is that if something really important comes to light, anywhere in the world, at any time of the day or night, you can always click on another video. We don't need to spend so much energy producing disinformation since you are all doing it for us, constantly.
She's brilliant!!!
My Dad said to me to not look around when I'm in or near a military installation.
M: I see a painter painting a picture. The picture I call the world, the painter I call God. I am neither. I do not create, nor am i created. I contain all, nothing contains me.
Nice elaboration, and good video introduction
it's crazy how bad the AV is
I don’t like new age brutalism. I feel like it’s lost its spiritual meaning in the modern world. It seems too perfect whereas megalithic structures like Stonehenge and the underground temples in Malta or Anatolia/Turkey still embody the deep mysteries of humanity connected to natural cycles. I understand this attempt here but having it in conjunction with even larger mundane creations like the people eating buildings, it seems more like window dressing on a horror instead of a human space on the earth that connects to the infinity. These works cannot possibly stand the test of time and will be gone as soon as whomever owns the land there tires of the current structures. They live on top of a scaffolding of cement and metal that has no connection to the original land and cannot hope to have any real connection to those who work or walk in their vicinity. The intention is absolutely pure and I understand the symbolism and talent behind such structures. I just personally think we need more of the permanency that the older creations are still able to teach us. Beauty and timelessness rarely work together and when they do it has an awe some effect on the psyche of everyone who experiences it. I’d rather see works like this grounded and given a chance at permanence. You should be able to feel the chance for your shadow to fall into the same space as a future offspring who likewise experiences the same in the reverse. Otherwise it is difficult for people to relate. I think it would be interesting to set climate markers in certain spaces and depending on their visibility to us, or their disappearance, used as bellwethers to physically see the changes humanity has caused. Sort of how the sands of the world’s deserts conceal and reveal our attempts at transcendence. A relatable thermometer humanity can watch and care for. Otherwise it becomes too abstract and uncontrollable for our species to manage. Sort of like the giant sun dials of old, but with the intention to track climate instead of celestial bodies.
Love this
Videographer and editor did good job. Mater of fact the lady elaborating the story line was amazing
Coming from the left, this sounds like some textual, liberal pablum.
